I have had a danelectro, but I never liked it. The idea of having a different type of material guitar is cool and gives a unique tone. However the hardware is awful. It easily falls out of tune. It's not a guitar for everyone. I am sure for the same price you can find something better. Not only Gib or Fender. But other brands. Maybe even local ones.

"Why not just get an Epiphone or Squier?" There's a difference between a Danelectro and a Squier/Epiphone: Danelectro's have originality. Sometimes, I just don't want a cheaper version of a Fender or Gibson. I want something that's cheap and yet ORIGINAL. Think of Epiphone and Squier like McDonald's and Burger King. Sure they're cheap and affordable and everybody eats there. Can I eat somewhere else that isn't a sandwich? Like pizza? Or Chinese food? A DIFFERENT FLAVOR.

When you've had Fender, Gibson, and PRS models for years and that's all you've heard, I suppose it's easy enough to get bored. Like eating nothing but Oatmeal with either Maple Syrup or Bacon for 40 weeks, you're _probably_ going to get bored of it, no matter how good it was to start with. Even me playing my 1966 Kay, its tone (both for what it is, and also what it isn't) helped me gain some appreciation for Strats. I'm one of those guys who likes Mosrite models (another company who can have an impressive and interesting tone in the right setup,) and I often enough have found Stratocasters boring, like if I play one, I'm gonna fall asleep while "driving." They're the poster child of a model (next to the Les Paul) that everyone and their great grandma knows. As such, they've gone through a lot of music, and how they're played often seems highly predictable, instead of being spontaneous. Admittedly, I suppose part of that's a lack of my own talent in Stratocaster Land. Either that, or it's a deep-seated belief that the model's just not for me in most situations. But I also think it's because the model had _so_ many people play it, that I don't feel like I'm going to be adding much (if anything) to music by playing precisely what many other people are. It just doesn't seem unique enough, nor does it seem to be my thing (usually.) Then again, what am I even doing musically, except nothing but bedroom playing, with rare exceptions of uploading a badly recorded video? I'm probably one of very few outspoken people who thinks of Strats like this. I have _some_ level of appreciation for them, but that's after having compared them to both my 1966 Mosrite, and 1966 Kay. Both models sounds "dry" by comparison. The Mosrite's still more clean than Gibson's P90 pickups. (Mosrites never used P90s, they just look like they do.) The Kay sounds a bit like a discounted Fender, but with AWG 43 Wire and metal casing for their "Pancake" bobbin pickups. I don't know what magnets they used for their pups, but I suspect they might have been Ceramics. That's just speculation, though. Having heard the Mosrite and Kay, I've realized that Fenders have a bit of a "wet" sound to them, even if it's a Stratocaster and not a Jaguar. That might not make sense tonally at first, because no one I've heard of seems to be using that term. But the tone of my Kay _sometimes_ leaves me feeling like "Agh, I wish I could drink in (listen to) the tone of a Fender right about now." I don't feel that way with the Mosrite, because the pickups are far more punchy and ready to overdrive an amp; it's a different kind of "dry tone," the type that doesn't leave me wanting a Fender in its place. I only bought the Mid 1966 Kay because I like how it looks aesthetically, and I like trying out less often played instruments. The Kay is an Old Kraftsman (Spiegel Catalog, first showed up for sale in the 1966 Fall - Winter Catalog) version of the Kay K-300 (not the 1962 - 1966 version with "Speed Bump" pickups that look like Gibson P13s, but the later type of the K-300 with pickups called "Cake Pan," "Pancake," and "Zippo" pickups) and this guitar has a surprisingly ornate pickguard. It's also often mistaken for a Vanguard model, but no sales catalogs indicate that. The Kay does have a pretty thick (that is, depth - not width) V profile neck, which helped me realize that not all thick necks are bad, and they can actually be comfortable for me. I've never played a thicker neck - it's about 0.970" inches thick from back to front around the 1st fret. The V profile moves my hand into a nice spot.
@stephenhawkingsfootballboo7885
You should play 'shite' guitars more often... this is some of the best jamming you've ever done. The limitations of the instruments are keeping you from just making your usual shred runs - you're actually creating mood and melodies!

@verigone2677
@verigone2677 6 лет назад
Actually, it has everything to do with those guitars. The sound you hear when you are just noodling on a guitar is almost completely responsible for anything new coming out of your playing. There is something to be said about when you pick up a guitar that doesn't have a genre association mired I your head, it will open up your thought process beyond what you would normally play as well. I certainly don't play the same licks on a Taylor Acoustic as I start to thumb out on say a Dusenberg Semi-hollow, and I don't play nearly the same music on a g-bender Tele as I do a normal tele....when you play a guitar totally foreign to your norm, you inevitably go further out of your normal realm.

I think the expression Lee was looking for was "Low-Fi". There's and time and a place for the roaring JCM 800 rock tone. But there's also a time and place for the "wasp in a jam jar" sound where's its fuzzy and lacking definition. That's kinda where Dan Electro guitars fall. They've got that super bright, jangley sound to them that give them character.

@@takemebacktothen Must have been the acid rain in Britain - or just the old hearsay. My old man had a couple of Themas and a Kappa back in the day. Zero rust. A squeaky seat rail, a power window dropping out... things like that. But no rust and better equipped and performing than anything you'd get from other European manufacturers for that price... ... which brings me back to Danelectro and the part where the analogy fails: Danelectros are too expensive for what they are. There is something so satisfying about coming back to this video and watch these two talk in circles, bash Dano, and reveal how little they know outside of their core brands, but then have arguably one of the best sounding jams on this channel.

Something with a dubious reputation for construction quality, and poorly set up by the factory, please. By the way, I'm a big fan of Jimmy Page." Lee: "Oh, yes; and welcome to Anderton's; we have several guitars that meet your criteria. I'm sure you'll hate owning one of them. The DC 59/12 is incredible, most playable electric 12 and definitely the best value, this half -arsed review is pretty crap really, have you actually spent any time with them? try the DC59 six string through an AC30 top boost with blue speakers. And any electric 12s needs to go through Roland JC120s to be given half a chance.

Also playing slowly is a million times more difficult than playing fast man"

I actually would choose a Danelectro over a $10,000 PRS. I mean obviously I’d take the PRS but then I’d sell it and buy real guitars with the $10,000. PRS are fugly, especially the high end ones. I love the way Danelectros look and looks are important. Look at what Jack White has accomplished with “junk” guitars. What’s more is there’s something to be said for being different. Look at Chapman guitars, they’re as generic as generic gets. I’d take a DE over anything Chapman produces.

The inception of the Danelectro concept, was to provide inexpensive guitars to anyone that might have, or have not, an inclination to even attempt playing a musical instrument. This is why they were sold near Sporting Goods or Appliance in Sears & Roebuck & Montgomery Wards. Even if You personally didn't like the Guitar line, You have to give their marketing ploy an A+ & a 1/2 for the genius behind selling guitars in a department store, plus a mail-order, as opposed to even attempting to draw your parents into a music shop!!! As far as the Dano's are concerned, they always had an unique sound, due to their construction, which by the way, was another hit out of the ballpark. Say what You will, the works Barrett, Page & White accomplished on these Dano's, is enough alone to buy one!!! **P.s. By the way, i still have my first rig my parents bought from Sears & Roebuck. A Silvertone 1449 amp in case model from 1963. I still play it, and it works flawlessly!!!

I have the same one Rob was playing at the beginning of the video but mine is in a black sparkle color. They are made of plywood/mdf and I got one because I was always intrigued by them from the first moment I saw them when I first started playing. They are hard to play mainly because of the ridiculous nonexistent weight and the neck is so awkwardly large. But I still love owning one.

Gee, I'd bet that more songs have been recorded with a Danelectro than you could name. And if Page used them some when he was performing on his many studio gigs during the 60's, well that says volumes by itself... And remember that the bass solo from My Generation was Entwhistle playing a Danelectro Long Horn bass! If anyone's played a more memorable bass solo that changed the way people thought about what a bass could do in R&R, I must've missed it! If you two guys can design and produce a guitar that develops the same type of following at the same price break, do it!

@thenotsoguitarguy9429
@thenotsoguitarguy9429 6 лет назад
rcoveyduc - innovative for a department store brand, though. First electric 12 string, invented the baritone, first electric sitar, basically made the guitar amplifier a thing... not bad for a company that built guitars out of surplus scrap and counter tops.

I always enjoy demo clips when players really go for the feeling and music like this here - brings out the instrument qualities in ways that "factual" demos cannot. You've also hit on another often missed gem in demos - that each instrument inspires different music completely, things we'd never normally do on our regulars. Good work boys

I got an old amp-in-case model that when dialed in has a really sweet tone. Plays crappily but well enough. It was always a cheap guitar but one previous owner played professionally with it and left a very detailed home-made instruction manual about all the adjustments that could be made on it. I always marvel at the design. Lots of people couldn't afford a better guitar back then.
