yo, a big-time fan. I am currently serving in the army as a 91B, wheeled vehicle mechanic. two things to know before had. when they break like that, they like to grind up the hub. also make sure when you get the axels you get bolts for them. the blots that go to the diff and the one that holds it in place. they are all one-time use bolts. also if you want a TM (technical manual) for that thing let me know I will email you one. any other questions, I will love to answer.

They don't survive years in a war zone. They are constantly deadlined and get "Circle X'ed" by the commander because the unit needs it for a field exercise. There's usually a few that are so far gone from being cannibalized for parts that they'll never run again, but the unit can't get rid of it because they are required to have so many on their property book.

in the world of mechanical seals, a boot mounted carbon stationary face with a stainless rotary is the cheapest of the cheap cheap....like chinese pumps from alibaba come with better seals. Could mount a L-shaped stationary to the jet pump housing with a bolted gland, and use a multi spring or single spring rotary head....silicon carbide vs. silicon carbide would handle sand wayyyyyyy better than some crappy stainless vs. carbon combination...sand will get imbedded in the carbon and turn it into a cutting wheel, can destroy that stainless in a heartbeat.
@von...
@von... 3 года назад
@@midship_nc huh, the more you know. I would have thought the carbon is pretty hard & would get impregnated with sand as easy. Would swapping to a different seal style be a straight forward deal? or would it require some thinking/retrofitting?
@midship_nc
@midship_nc 3 года назад
@@von... I work for a mechanical seal manufacturer. We design and sell a huge variety of seals on any rotational shaft...ranging from 30 dollar stuff like these jetski jetpumps to $400,000 dollar seals for the oil and gas industry. You will have a soft face running against a hard face and in this case it is carbon(soft) running against stainless steel(hard). Given the nature of river water having particulate and silt, and high pressure water inside the pump wants to escape to low pressure (atmosphere)...it will carry the silt across the faces and embed into the soft carbon as it does so. You could use two hard faces made of silicon carbide or tungsten carbide and the sand would not be able to scratch and embed. These seals on these jetpumps are mega cheap quality....I could take measurements of the housing bore and shaft then probably come up with something that would last much, much longer for about 150 bucks or less.
@bigolbootycheeks9138
@bigolbootycheeks9138 3 года назад
@@midship_nc well, I found the pump seal wizard in the comments... You could save a lot of people headaches with your advice! All I know, is sand and silt aren't the recommended substance for these things to be bringing through the intake grate. I try not to run any of my skis in anything under 2 or 3 feet of water, and I'm careful when I do. I've seen too many people have to pack it in early for the season from ripping up seals. Most of my skis are 20-30 years old, besides my little Spark. So I'm used to having problems here and there.
@midship_nc
@midship_nc 3 года назад
@@bigolbootycheeks9138 it really doesnt matter on depth of water. "clean" river or lake water still has enough stuff suspended to ruin a mechanical seal. The faces are lapped to have a total surface deviation of 2 microns, thats 2 millionths of an inch. Around the same flatness as an optical mirror for a telescope. The fluid film between them is about 1 micron thick while running. Silt is sub micron and will get in there regardless. Hate to bombard with information but there it is lol.

I was a Light Wheel Vehicle mechanic in the Army (1985-89) when the Humvee was introduced. Operating a 5 Ton wrecker, I can tell you first hand that those half-shafts break quite often. I'd have expected an improved shaft assembly since those early days because the unit drivers would literally break all four half-shafts, leaving the Humvee immobilized, before calling maintenance to recover the vehicle. I used to work for a fishing charter in Alaska. We used Humvees (H1 the first civilian version released for sale to the public) to beach launch our 32 foot jet boats off of trailers through the serf and not once in the 12 years i did this did we ever break an axle or cv joint on our Humvees. You need to go through yours to replace damaged seals because water should not be getting into your transmission, oil pan, or transfer case. If you are getting water into the above mentioned areas either the seals are worn out or missing. We put over 50,000 miles on each of our humvees on a sand and gravel beach ramming boat trailers ( the boats weighed 8,800 lbs) through up to 6 foot waves and never once had transmission or transfer case issues. I no longer work there but these 2 Humvees have been going up and down beaches and dunes since the late 1990's without a major mechnical issue. You have already damaged axles and seriously contaminated your transmission and transfer case in less than 3 weeks. By the way if you ruin the transmission they cost over $10,000 to rebuild or replace and it usually takes over 3 months just to get the parts. I really wish i had the money to be jacksses like you and James and destroy all of your expensive equipment and engines just for shits and giggles. I really hope you treat your elcamino better as your friend has spent hundreds of hour building it right. It would be a shame to see it mistreated like all of your other stuff. Your boats are already showing wear and tear in places that should be good for years and yet they have damage from sand and gravel because you decided to take them places they were never designed for. The jet pump in James's boat should not have this level of damage in less than a month.

Big thing to remember is that your jet drives will suck rocks from up to like 6ft off the river bottom. It's a good idea to avoid shallow water, or at least back out of the throttle to save the jet when you hit shallow water. Running hard in the shallows will cause a lot of premature wear.

Up here in western Canada we run a 4 inch strip of the umhw on either side of the keel on top of the other just bevel cut it and join them together also gives you a little more bite in the turns, plus a full inch of keel protection, probably not a big deal for Florida with the softer bottom but if your going to run them in Alaska with their boulder bottom rivers you’ll wish you had it. Bonus adds extra protection for when you’re jumping logs as the keel is the first point of contact.
