In this video fish Veterinarian Doctor Loh is called out to an evening emergency. A pond of koi and goldfish began to secrete mass amounts of mucus, with flashing, heaving breathing and sitting on the bottom. Doctor Loh warns on the dangers of making assumptions as these symptoms could be easily confused with a parasitic infection, and see why in the video treating for parasites when the problem could be a water quality related issue can be very dangerous for your fish. We also demonstrate some steps on how to treat skin ulcers in fish.

How often do you check your water quality? what tests do you normally perform? and what do you use to buffer your pH? please share in comments below and let me know if you have any questions.

I check monthly (nanoaquarium) and have some trouble keeping the pH LOW actually! My bee dwarf shrimp need a pH between 5 and 6.5, but the pH stays between 7-8 , I use pH-min solution but it always buffers back higher. I think it's because I have pH-neutral sand as substrate which is the buffer. The dwarf shrimp are used to it and they are luckily alive and well. I've had them since they were babies so they are used to it ;)

Well I have to admit. I have all the reagents and I don’t test. I faithfully do a vacuuming and 50% water change in my 45 gallon tropical one a week, and I have never seen any fish issues in between. Canister filter I squeeze out clean every 3 weeks.

yeah it's true that when goldfish are sick, their mates come check on them - I have a goldfish with a swim bladder problem and sleeps upside down, one of its friends usually hangs out nearby and props her up, and they kinda just float together at the bottom of the tank until she wakes up (or when I turn on the lights)

A bag of shells, calcium carbonate in the filter will keep pH and kH stable for the koi and goldfish. They prefer harder water. I have a bog filter of pebbles and some of them are limestone pebbles.

Because I only have rain water the PH is usually around 5.4 so I use bi-carb to raise the PH. I always check the water before I treat the fish. It's usually cheaper and easier treating water than fish,. Thanks Dr Loh

I had 2 full grown 2 yr. old tinfoil barbs & 1 jumped out of the tank I was cleaning while I was away for about 30-45 minutes, knocking the lid off. When I found him, he was 8 ft. away from the tank & pretty crispy/dry feeling. I picked him up & dropped him back in the tank. For 2 days his buddy swam under him & beside him keeping him upright. I was amazed at what he was doing! Unfortunately, the third day the injured fish wouldn't remain upright at all & his eyes were opaque, so I humanely euthanized him. It's been 14 yrs. & I still have the other barb!

Hi, I have well water in Ohio and have a koi pond about 17 x 13.5 and 3 to 4 foot under waterfall. My well water ph is 7.5 and my KH is at 300. My problem is I can't keep my ph down it runs high all the time. Any suggestions? I add water a lot to help. I read where peat will help. Would like to know what you think would help. Thank you, Pat

Hi, thanks for the great videos. I have a fairly new pond set up for my goldfish (he is 12 years old but only been in the new pond for a month) but the PH has suddenly spiked today to around 9. Last week there was a sudden growth of algae on all sides and base of the pond. I added some oxygenating plants and lilys to the pond yesterday, and now the water is going green/slightly cloudy as well. My fish is behaving mostly as normal, though he is a little more sluggish. Should I take action yet to lower the PH or is this normal when adding new plants? How can I lower the PH? Everything else (KH and Nitrate readings) are as expected Many thanks!
@thefishdoctor8746
@thefishdoctor8746 4 года назад
In a planted pond, the diurnal fluctuations in pH is more noticeable due to the consumption or production of carbon dioxide by aquatic plants and algae. Use buffers available at your pond store to keep pH range between 6.5-8.0

Hi doc. I check my parameters weekly at water change time. I have a strange situation. My carbonate hardness is pretty high at 6-8 deg, yet my general hardness is really low at less than 1 deg. PH is 8-8.2 from the tap. The fish are all fine, but I have some snails that I'm worried may not be getting enough calcium from the low general hardness... Is there something I can add to bump general hardness, but not carbonate hardness?
@thefishdoctor8746
@thefishdoctor8746 4 года назад
Rift lake salts will help increase GH. It may elevate your KH, but not your current pH, since carbonates stabilise pH at 8.0-8.5

And secondly im very goldfish crazy. I test my water every 2 to 3 days at the least 🙈😂 i run ammonia/nitrite/nitrate/ph everytime but i occasionally test for others. Since my ph seems to always run the same ive never done anything to buffer it. But now i have to do research today because now im thinking thats something i need to really need to stay on top of

Ok so I started a new 29 gallon fish tank with 4 goldfish feeders, I used water conditioner and bacteria safe start, so I could immediately put fish in, I lost all 4 goldfish in less than 20 hours, then I went and got 2 African cichlids to replace goldfish loss, lost chiclids in about 2 hours, I've started many new tanks in the past, not even using bacteria safe start and never lost 6 fish that quickly, maybe in the past I might have lost 2 or 3 out of a batch of 6 new fish , but never like that, the pet store told me my ph was around 7.0 and it looked like I had hard water, so I'm stuck wondering if I had the worst case scenario of new tank syndrome or if the guy I rent my room from poisoned my fish tank because he's worried about it running up the power bill
