Dangerous bare 230V LED tape

I'm not sure what application this bare mains voltage LED tape is intended for, but the implication in the listing that it can be used under kitchen cabinets, in bathrooms and children's play rooms may not be appropriate.
Despite operating at full mains voltage, this tape can still be cut every 100mm (4") and does not need an external rectifier. It achieves this with built in rectifiers, multi-chip LEDs and current limiting resistors. Rather pleasingly it doesn't grill them for a change - even on a 245 volt supply.
The listing actually showed a linear current regulator on each section, but the tape that arrived has resistors. That's fine. It means there may be a slight intensity change with voltage fluctuations, but the resistors are going to be much more reliable than an active component.
The track spacing is squirmy for the voltages involved. This tape is not suitable for use anywhere with even the slightest risk of condensation forming, and if mounted onto a metal backing there is very little between mains voltage and the surface it's mounted on. Even hygroscopic adhesive could pose an issue.
The only places this tape could be used are in well insulated or grounded enclosures to avoid the risk of it being touched. The possibility of the tape parting from its adhesive would have to be considered, and it definitely needs a low value fuse.
It's interesting stuff, but it has very niche uses. The listing I got it from is here:-
www.ebay.co.uk/itm/324757770303
If you enjoy these videos you can help support the channel with a dollar for coffee, cookies and random gadgets for disassembly at:-
www.bigclive.com/coffee.htm
This also keeps the channel independent of RU-vid's advertising algorithms allowing it to be a bit more dangerous and naughty.

Back in the day, we never always did have switches. I remember, when I was a kid seeing bare wires piggybacked into an actual plug socket but no switches. If you'd lost a plug, that was the temporary solution back then. If you kept the wires just short enough, a kid couldn't electrocute themselves. I also remember cables and fittings that fitted into the very low wattage wiring circuits via the bayonet fitting. My Nana used that for Ironing with a 1000w iron. Maybe they wired the whole houses with 2.5mm cable back then. Hahahaha.

Ideal safe lighting for a leaky damp garden shed where the petrol lawnmower is kept. I'm sure sensible home-installers will use a 13A fuse in the plug that goes into the extension lead they've run from the kitchen. A bonus point is that any rats chewing this stuff will be pre-cooked even before the shed burns and the lawnmower explodes. That would be a proper BigClive how-to video.

There's a chinese product store near where I live (Canary islands) who installed very similar to these over their entire ceiling area. When you walked into the shop it was like walking onto the beach on a sunny day, bathed in bluey-white but somewhat flickery light. I think they alternated the connection polarity for every even/odd strip to reduce the flicker effect by half. A few years on some strips have failed and overall the light output is less than half, but when the shop first opened it was like walking into a giant stroboscope.
@DarronBirgenheier
@DarronBirgenheier 2 года назад
These appear to use "full-bridge" rectifiers (said in my head in Electroboom's voice). Therefore, any and all of these strips running on the same grid power should flicker in sync, no matter their connection polarity, at either 100 or 120 times per second, depending on the country.

I bought a role of that lighting in the 110/120 volt (American flavor) about 10 years ago. It's cheap Chinese but it did have some kind of thin clear 'stuff' on it. The conductors weren't bare but I definitely wouldn't get it around water. Anyway, it has been my kitchen 'under cabinet' lighting for several years and it works well. With the conductors bare on the roll that you got, it seems that they took a cheaply made product and made it even cheaper! Imagine that! The fella from the Kalashnikov group came across a few Chinese made AK rifles with ballpoint pen springs in them for extractor springs! Anything the Chinese think they can do to cut corners, they will. There is no concern about safety, just trying to make more money. Ya'll Take Care and be safe, John

Some crocodile clips would make it far easier to electrocute everyone. Just cut a standard IEC mains cable, expose the wires (just use a knife to peel back insulation, doesn't matter if you compromise the inner layers when you break the outer), add crocodile clips. Make sure to mark which one is live so you know the true source of the spiciness. Goes without saying that this is parody. Please don't ever do this. This is an awesome find. It really is the "Golden Turd" Standard of Chinese electronics. As it's flexible, it would be great for a fetching illuminated shower curtain. I wonder if they are going to do a 415V version for professional work environments. If there were any minor tracking issues, rubbing some oil on to the copper pads with a finger could be done. Once the tingly feeling dies down, the anti-tracking is complete for that section (notwithstanding the odd carbonised bit of skin - but that stuffs renewable and free).

I feel like some of the proximity issues of the buses could be solved with a 90° rotation of the LEDs. I've never seen that done, so is there some unwritten rule dictated by pick'n'place machines that they can't be sideways, or...? It feels like you could then say that the LEDs were "closer together" because the packages are slightly oblong, even though I think the lit sections of each LED are roughly square. Thoughts, Clive?
@3zuli
@3zuli 2 года назад
I think the LEDs are always placed in this direction to minimize the mechanical stress from bending the strip and to also allow a slightly tighter bending radius. The solder joint also provides some reinforcement to the LED against breaking during bending. Imagine if you had a 5630 strip with the LEDs rotated by 90 degrees, how easily they could break if you bent the strip too aggressively.

The thing I love the most about ebay is how much "not intended for consumer" subassemblies and other items end up being sold. I'm sure the original design intent of the tape was for some sealed light tube or something, and someone in the supply chain got the brilliant idea to just sell the bare tape. Still not even even approaching the level of scary of some of the chemicals you can buy on ebay, like hexavalent chromium compounds. Personally, I wouldn't have it any other way. "caveat emptor" shall be the whole of the (consumer protection) law ;)

Clive, you gave me a good idea. I need a new socket to use the kettle at the opposite end of my work-top. I could just add a row of these LEDS under the top-cupboard that runs over the sink, connect the mains at one end and the kettle at the other. I'd need to turn on the lights every time I use the kettle and potentially keep the steam from the kettle away from the LED strip, but that's a small price to pay.......... Thanks for the tip.

I bought a couple of rolls of the same LED strips a few months ago - however just the 12VDC version - and I love them. I'd never ever occur to me to operate such tapes in the 230V version (you don't even have to use "Murphie's Law" to know with just a little experience that sooner or later this would end just badly). The 12VDC version (warm light) is great, perfectly dimmable with PWM, makes a wonderful light from dim to very bright, stays pretty cool, can be operated very safely with little effort, galvanically isolated from the mains, and double-encapsulated outdoor versions are also available ( transparent silicone coating against moisture and even full encapsulation using a transparent rubber hose) ...what's negative to mention would be the lousy adhesive tape - after 1 week at the latest it detaches from almost all surfaces (gravity's a bitch) and you can't help but think of a solid, mechanical attachment. It's also a pity, of course, that you can't make "curves" with the tapes (when they are lying flat) and they can only be used rigidly in a straight line ... that's bad if you wanted to retrofit a circular lamp f.e. (magnifying glass lamp and the like).

@@tookitogo ...I did that too, of course, but it doesn't help when heat (warmth) and gravity are involved (in the case of ceiling mounting, upside down).
