We used to have these crappy Chinese extension cords in the U.S too, such as 100 foot long orange cords that were maybe 20-22awg wire inside, but these have disappeared most everything I see now is of decent quality, but you do have to be careful buying from eBay ect.

Not because í would have something like that in my house, but the non-tech-savvy neighbours who think a wire is a wire would just buy that and connect their microwave through it... I live in an apartment building with neighbours below me and beside me... It does seem strange to make an extension cord this flimsy. On the other hand it does make a good fuse. I use speaker wire to power up a few low power led light bulbs it works great.

These cables are used for christmas lighting especially LED. Some lights even come with these extensions. Not meant to be used for anything else.

I get the impression this extension cord was weight optimized. Obsiously thinner wires are cheaper, but the costs savings are small and wether the cable costs €2 or €2,10 won't hurt sales that much. However, weight is a big factor: In order to be able to get it delivered for free to your door, it is necessary that it is matches the international postal rules for letters. International treaties require postal services to deliver letters for relatively low prices and this is the mechanism that allows for the free delivery. But in order to be accepted as a letter, the cable has to fit in a max weight. The free delivery does make a big difference in sales and therefore perfectly explains the chocie for an extremly thin cable. There is a quite perverted mechanism at work here: Producers adjust to the rules of the market. The market demands weight optimization and producers are willing to sacrifice safety in order to reduce weight.

It seems that the extension cable is only intended for Christmas tree lights when viewed from the size of the socket. A Christmas light plug will fit in that socket, but not a normal European plug. I think we have to blame the seller for giving an exaggerated description.

That's one crappy bit of wire. The 5 or 13 amp fuses in u.k plugs give some protection, but you have nothing :-( i've noticed car jump start cables that are not made from solid copper, aluminium wires with a thin coating of copper, that won't help to start a car, cheap crap!!.

Thats scary! I really cant believe these things are allowed. The plug looks like it would fit an old style UK 5 amp socket now most commonly seen as shaver sockets then at least would be fused at 1 amp which MITE just be ok. Although I cant ever see any one here using them they have no real use here

You said that in Europe the most common breaker type is B, however here in Italy ist almost always C, i don’t know why, since we don’t tend to use particularly large inductive loads, it would be much more sensible if we used B types...

i saw this being sold by a different seller as a Christmas light extension which would make a lot more sense given the clear insulation and thin gauge wire

Sure you test and destroy a very inexpensive item but the fact you're showing the many calculations is excellent. ive seen that on the end of christmas tree lamps end, and thats ok for extending the lamps because they draw like 100mA or less. But if you plug something else it will burn.

In Vietnam, everybody uses speaker cable for extension cords. Meanwhile when we go camping we have a green paint drenched 30m speaker cable then if there is a power point, we cook with induction.

I occasionally buy some clip leads from China. I have received some CCA ones (copper clad aluminium) but also tinned or copper plated iron ones. You can recognize the last ones easily - the wire is attracted by magnets. When they inevitably break (either by running more than 2 amps through it, or because the connection between wire and clip breaks) i just replace it with some salvaged proper coper wire. Proper clip leads are hard to find - the local electronics shop also sells the chinese ones that quickly break - although they do use copper wire.

In the US it is very common to see extension cords without fuses that aren't rated for the circuit breakers capacity but at least they're not nearly as bad as the one shown in this video. In the US circuit breakers on outlet circuits are typically 15 amps and its very common to see extension cords rated for only 13.5 amps.

I believe those are for "decorative use only" such as only Christmas lights and such. It also appears to have that recessed plug so that the male plug seats into it and maybe even fit moisture blocking maybe. Surely that wasn't sold as an actual extension cord, that would be crazy!

My guess would have been that the wire is pot metal, but normally that’s mostly zinc. I’m quite puzzled now.

As far as i know this type of cable is forbidden in the EU because it's easy to misalign the plug and have one pin exposed and the other pin connected to mains.

This is alternative current. The Ohm law form you used are for continuous.

I wouldn't use that cord for USB power. 5v 1A would blow that wire.

Good maths theory and practical demonstration but it's irrelevant for UK. The cable would not catch fire in the UK because UK plugs (BS1363) are fitted with an internal cartridge fuse (BS1362); which have a maximum value of 13 Amps. The Fuse Operation Characteristics of an internal cartridge fuse (BS1362) state that it will go open circuit at about 1.66 times its rated value, so for a 13 Amp fuse this will be 21.6 Amps As the calculated short circuit current is 41 Amps (230V / 5.6 Ohms = 41 Amps) the fuse in the UK plug would provide overload protection.
