I am working on this CRT, the Sony KV20FS120 Trinitron Wega. Convergence adjustment time. For more information on repairs, diagnostics and to connect with me, please visit: / retrotechusa #retro #retrotech #tech
Hey there! I'm actually the author of that reddit post, crazy luck I found this video and watched until you tested it! I haven't tried it on that test screen but in my PS1 games played on my PS2 (240p) it really helped make the image more crisp and stop the weird flicker.
I had my PS1 connected to a Panasonic plasma TV with an HDMI cable for a while, then I reconnected it with A/V cables. The picture using the HDMI one looked good, but with the A/V cables a bit worse, but still near perfect.
that's perfect, i'm planning to adjust the convergence on the corners of my kv-29cl10b. Great timing ;) I already messed a bit with the rings on the yoke that most modern fd trinitron have, that helped to reduce the horizontal bowing. Without gloves i was a bit scared to do it live, so i wait for high voltage gloves to come, to get more confidence in tweaking this set further. I'll have to check if it has the potientiometer on the yoke that helps with convergence on the corners, that you showed on another video about a modern trinitron smaller set. Thanks for your hard work.
Steve there is a second pattern which is better for this, you can find it under linearity, there is a second pattern within this option, second to the circles , check it out 😊
I was messing with the damn convergence rings for hours on my Sony 21" FD Trinitron (consumer), no matter what I did I could not get it to set right, the top remains misaligned :( I was half asleep in the end reaching over a deadly dose of electricity trying to get it right.
Nice video! I've adjusted AFC GAIN on a Toshiba 14AF not for the flickering but just for fixing geometry, didn't realize it affected jitters. Also why not just use the VM off setting in the regular TV menu instead of the service menu? Another question I have for Sony TVs are do you have any idea what SSHP, SBRT, SCON do? On this forum post they recommend SSHP and SBRT on max and SCON on min. The post online is titled: “Essential settings to tune on a Sony KV-xxFV300/310” Also could one use those convergence strips in the same way as the bigger circle magnets on the tube to affect geometry? Or are the strips too weak relative to the circle ones?
Did the recap improve the convergence? I'm considering do a recap on my samsung hd CRT. I've got very bad convergence on the left and right sides. If my set looked like yours I'd be doing cartwheels in the street!
i remember being so depressed by my 50 inch sony WEGA that i cut the power cords on the back with a knife and brang it to the dump. was a sober? no. do i regret doing that? yes. i could have sold that for alot of money. this was a few years ago. pleaes forgive me.
my insignia CRT from 2005 is better than any sony CRT out there. s-video looks amazing with ps1 games. sony is not the end all be all of CRT. ive had a sony trinitron and giant 50 inch WEGA in the past, they are great, but are overhyped imo.
Isnt that one of those TVs that weighs 100 pounds plus. We had a Wega 32 inch in 2001, the thing weighed almost 200 pounds. I remember being so excited to play my ps1 on it, and... it made the ps1 look absolutely horrible. Only the s-video output was acceptable at all. With the PS2 it only looked good through component cables, metal gear solid 3 looked amazing on it.
I've got the 36" WEGA with the matching stand. It was extremely heavy. Even with 2 full-grown men lifting it we nearly dropped it when trying to maneuver it out of the previous owner's house. You really need proper moving equipment for these things if you don't want to get hurt or drop the TV. I'd attempted to bring a similar 36" WEGA home from a Craigslist free ad prior to that and my friend and I did drop it on that occasion, snapping the neck of the tube. Was really bummed about that one as that TV was immaculate, and was the secondary TV from a wealthy family nearby, with very little use on it.
