Looove keeping up with your videos! My sons been fighting arachnophobia. We raised a regal sling which helped tremendously. She just passed from old age and the first thing he said the next morning was that he wanted a tarantula for his birthday! After tons of research and watching your videos, he picked out a grammostola pulchra sling. He wants to be able to watch it grow like our regal and potentially have it around for more years that way. Thanks for helping so many fight that fear and raising awareness! ❤

from what I know, you can try boiling water to rinse or steam the enclosure for some time(don't know exactly how long unfortunately). Heat will kill off the fungus and spores so you can prevent it from growing.

Funny you should say, my G Pulchra has buried itself for over a month. Like the noob that I am I got worried and dug it up which prompted it to rather angrily bury itself and its plump rump again. Yah, pre-moult. About fungus: I had this issue in my L Parahybanas enclosure. I didn't understand it since conditions were beneficial in there. Little did I know that a food item had buried itself in the soil and promptly died. In turn we had fungal galore and a rehouse. I'm also happy about the fact that mr TK will be an recurring fixture in your videos. Take care and stay safe👍.

Im in Sydney,Australia. I have 36 Australian old worlds. We have over 50 different species and more being discovered. I get the yellow fungus when it's too damp, I believe. But an Arachnid scientist told me this happens a lot in the wild.He said that a tarantula will move if fungus gets too bad or burrow deeper. But any spider has no issues moving house. It's all about temperature and food. He said a burrowing any spider in 5cm, it doesn't have to be 10cm. As long as temperature is right. If you give it a deep substrate, of course, it will go down deep, but you'll never see it.

I do all my T enclosures 'bioactive', that is, with compost worms and isopods. They feed on all the mould. Never have encountered such a problem. I've got a bit of algae growing deep on the sides now n then but that's all. Ofc it works better in bigger, adult enclosures.

do you not like using the clay balls/mesh technique that some people use - with the reasoning that it controls the moisture? just curious if it's not your preference or just not applicable/appropriate for the enclosures you're setting up? 🤷🏼‍♀️🌟🍄

You probably already know this, but get one of those sprayers of peroxide from any drugstore or grocery store--ow I skinned my knee grade, not "food" or hair bleaching grade. Don't spray your boop, and maybe remove them if you can, but spraying around them will PROBABLY be ok--it just becomes H20 after all the fizzing, fungi-killing fun starts. I have not had this in enclosures, but I've had it when cultivating certain lifeforms. It's not a guaranteed cure, but it will knock that fungi back pretty hard. More air circulation just as you said IMO.

So question: Would it not be beneficial (also more work) if you spread the soil you are going to use on a big pan and cook it in an oven. That should kill all the spores and have a very very low risk of it growing at all. Is that an option or would that kill beneficial microbes in the soil?
@Debora_9x
@Debora_9x Год назад
I've been wondering for a while now.. I mostly follow snakes related channels, and they use tons of springtails, isopods, they also usually boil leaves, corks, twigs, bake the dirt and so on. Now, my question is, doing aaaaall this work would be beneficial even for tarantulas? Especially in this case to not risking having any fungus growing again, would you prefer "sterilizing" everything or keep it like now? I don't really want to start to discuss deeply about the implications, what is right, what is this or that, but was just wondering, that's all. ^^ (Most of the stuff I've mentioned above can be found already sterilized, I came to understand, but some still prefer to do couple things by themselves.)
@jadeslocombe9317
@jadeslocombe9317 Год назад
Baking etc is kind of pointless because it kills off everything. Including anything 'good' that might already be colonising something and would otherwise prevent something 'bad' taking hold. Easily seen with those reptile java branches - fungal spores are abundant in the air around us. Add a little warmth, and some moisture, and a 'sterile' branch and whatever lands there first, or is strongest in that environment, takes over. Springtails are useful, but only if the enclosure is moist enough to support the population - and then they are more for managing growths from a bolus or such, rather than full colonisation of something that was stripped clean. The best thing is to not keep everything permanently moist, but allow bits to dry out, and remove waste whenever possible. If an issue shows in an enclosure, moving the water dish can help so any spillage isn't contributing, and that area can dry out. *Most* fungus is harmless to tarantulas *most* of the time. In the case of the former, there are species of fungus specialised for certain animals - these should be rarely encountered, especially in captive bred tarantulas (which should be the tarantulas people are getting). Regarding the latter, less is certain in that area and it's one I'm currently hoping to research further - the most vulnerable times when it comes to non specialised fungus will most likely be during molting. I'm also considering whether younger tarantulas, whose cuticle is not yet fully developed, may be vulnerable to a lesser degree than during a molt but more than one who is further developed.
@McPilch
@McPilch Год назад
Springtails will be your MVP! Even in my 4" 360° cribs with slings I have a small havoc group of springtails. 🥷🪳 They also give some visual activity to your "pet hole" enclosure!! 😅 Also with no access to the "specialist substrate" here downunder, I make my own mix.. always including small-sized bits of filter carbon and sphagnum moss, to help the substrate be aerated and give little alcoves to springtails and other microscopic critters. Bit like an ABG mix but less chunkiness as all my critters are young-uns.
