Another important suggestion is a fence and locked gate around any pool and even some hot tubs accessible by children. Another is screens on 2nd story windows and even ground floor windows. Wow!!! You are the first channel (that I know of) to do this kind of safety videos ... KUDOS!!! You should be given an award for this. It's funny you would bring this up though. Recently, I found a low vintage chair that I thought would be great for my Shih Tzu to curl up on at night (being that she is developing problems jumping up onto the bed.) I brought it home and put it in the living room, hoping she would get familiar and comfy with it. She didn't and so I thought I'd get rid of it. Unfortunately, I put it to the road again and nobody claimed it. My husband decided to put it in the backyard (where it eventually found it's way to the "burning" pile because of a broken leg.) Last weekend he started a fire and put the complete chair on the fire. WHOOOSH!!! That thing went up like a fire bomb (is there such a thing???) The material burned so fast that it was melted and gone within seconds!!! Oh my! I didn't even think about how much we have moved forward in safety re: household furniture, materials, etc that come today when we enjoy the "vintage" look, we forget the safety features of what we are putting back into our "cozy and safe" home. Thanks for doing this. I will proceed to get my "farmhouse" look with safety in mind. Point well-share and taken.

Great clip teaching us about dangers in our homes!! Another warning is about candles is they should only be burned the equivalent of 1 hour burn time per each inch of diameter. Then extinguish it and wait for it to cool before relighting. I have severe bone loss and have been warned that I MUST get rid of all my scatter rugs to protect me from tripping and possibly having a nasty fall.

Some great advice. So many decorating trends/fadd that are so unsafe and really not practical. Have never liked the tv above the fireplace. Hadn't thought of heat issue but neck issue. Staring up at tv causing pain. House plants and pets and kids, stairs like that are totally a hazard... Thanks for doing this video.

I'm with you on the neck pain, I'd hate to be looking up at the tv, to me it's at or slightly above eye level ideally. Always wondered why anybody would want it high up & especially why over a fireplace? Very weird!

@@traciebecker6669 Personally never understood who or why the designers started putting the tv over the fireplace. Some of us don't work on computers or stare at phones all day. @@anniemac3075 well, I guess you wouldn't like our 72 inch TV over our fireplace. But that's okay, we love it, and we both had pretty messed up backs and necks. We are retired so everynight we do our dinner and a movie. After we eat dinner we kick back in our recliners and enjoy watching great films. To each their own. We don't use our un-vented gas fireplace at all.

Leslie, this was an awesome, practical video. We have some exposed old brick which I love but was unaware of the moisture issue. As for the TV thing, I am always nervous about TVs that “hang” above the FP and falling on people , pets or children. We added a new family room a couple yrs ago and after much research to design our built ins, he added a large, deep open box area above the FP unit and he super insulated between and covered the bottom of the box with dark gray tiles. So the TV now sits into the box, back from the mantel which is the same level. The rest of the box is sheetrocked to the crown molding and we painted it charcoal gray so the TV blends right in ( built in shelving is white ). Hard to visualize, but it never gets even warm inside it. It also keeps the TV from causing neck strain.

I notice that in a lot of American kitchens the microwave is fitted above the cooker, which isn’t something we do generally in the UK. I’ve always puzzled over it, doesn’t it get hot when you use the cooker or perhaps you just have to make sure you don’t do both at the same time?

This was such a great informative video, thanks for informing me of hazards I didn't know about! I will be so much more careful with the wicker baskets I have in my home now. You should do a part two sometime, a lot of people use vintage dishes from Corningware and such and not all of them are lead-free. Plus when you do a DIY project and you have a rag that has stain or finish on it, it can catch on fire unless you dispose of it/store it properly. Too many home decor hazards to count!

Great video . I think a video needs to be made about renovations. My sister had her whole home redone . The choices and things you have to think about is crazy . Like kitchen soap dispensers that are part of the counter . Left or right . If it’s part of an island how far do you go back so it does not obstruct people eating on the counter the other side of the island just imagine how many decisions like this for the entire home. . When we redesigned our kitchen, they had a microwave on top of the stove. 1) it blocks someone from attending the stove when you have multiple ppl in the kitchen ( mom cooking , kids want to reheat something quickly) 2) it’s dangerous to pick up something above you especially that’s hot and heavy 3) it’s harder to clean or maintain unless you are a certain height .

So true! I bought a new huge stainless steel sink, new faucet, etc. and didn't go see the sink in person. I got all the specs on it, pictures etc. and it didn't even register that the soap dispenser was on the right. I hate it being on the right didn't even know that was done. Yeah, I wasn't thinking. 🤔 And I'm going to tell you the truth, though it is sooo much better than what I had, those old shallow rusting stainless double bowls I am sorry I bought stainless and not a heavy duty white iron, porcelain sink. My old sink was so scratched and I forgot how quickly they get scratched. I really wanted an old fashioned white sink but none were in stock and we couldn't get an answer about when they would be. So, I settled. It's okay though my housemate beautifully installed the new sink for free and it's 90% better than what I had and this will probably do for me for the rest of my life. I would have had to hire someone to install a much heavier sink.
@Lashlove16
@Lashlove16 2 года назад
@@traciebecker6669 congrats on your renovated kitchen . I am so happy for you . I hope this brings you lots of great cooking that you can enjoy making and hopefully invite family and friends to make great memories. My sister got a stainless steel farm style and I got scratches right away. It’s not as easy as we think it is . Also ppl always boast marble . It’s stains very easily so not the best for a kitchen . I wish there was a video about things like this . At least so you are aware when making decisions. My sisters contractor was amazing and fast but they did the whole house so many details were rushed that he might have had more time if it was just one room

@@Lashlove16 yeah and thanks. We just put in new vinyl plank flooring in 2019 and the new sink. I kept my formica countertops and the very solid and plentiful wood cabinets. Then painted and installed 18 inch deep solid wood shelves which made a huge improvement in space and functionality.

I'll take flack for that ...it's ok, lol. It's not a nice look, just IMHO. The heat issue , for one ,and it's not a good viewing point , for ones neck . I wasn't aware that people actually think stairs without a banister is ok ...??? I believe it's against Building Codes. ...
