This could be the most important posting you have ever made. So many decorating channels are centered around impressing other people. I am in my 80's and in every decorating decision I question whether it is safe and could eventually a wheel chair navigate. Last year I replaced carpet with wood flooring. My safety precaution was I went with area rugs which were relative inexpensive, which meant they were not very thick. I wasn't interested in people thinking "Wow, she must have spent a fortune on that wool rug." As you know, expensive does not equal tasteful. I was able to check off every concern you had. Thank you.

Further to the idea of securing tall furniture or not leaning mirrors against the wall due to earthquake risk: be cognizant of artwork hanging over beds. Keep it lightweight and glass-free and make sure it's hung securely. No one needs anything falling on their head, especially something heavy.

As someone who has Menieres Disease and vertigo I am definitely aware of safety in my home. I will have no large floor tile or tripping hazards in my home. I have rails on both sides of my stairs (inside and outside) and I will not have a microwave over the stove! With the dizziness that comes with vertigo I have learned to make sure my home is safe. And I'm not that old but compromised health comes with any age. Thank you Garrett for a very important message and just love your channel! 🦩🌴☀️😊❤️🥰☺️🥰❤️🥰❤️

I lost any gained safety points for ditching the over-the-range microwave by recklessly removing it myself on a whim while home alone. That thing was heavy, and at such an awkward angle. So glad it's gone, though. What an ugly and inconvenient place for a microwave.

One dangerous design flaw I see not infrequently in both older homes and new builds is second floor bedrooms with doors that open right across the hall from the stairway. Shame on architects who design floor plans like this. It is not hard to imagine a child or a guest or just someone over tired leaving the room at night to use the bathroom and tumbling down the stairs. The only solution, unless the door can be moved, is to put a gate at the top of the stairs and lock it once everyone is upstairs for the night. Even that isn't fool proof.

We originally had planned for large slate finish tile in the bathroom but switched to ceramic mosaic tile for safety because we aren't getting any younger. We put a safety bar in the tub/shower for the same reason. Anybody thinking it's unfashionable, what's super unfashionable is an ER visit because you fell in the bathroom and concussed yourself

I, too, am recovering from a serious illness, and I cannot say enough about the physical and occupational therapy I received. The PT/OT techs have all sorts of practical advice on how to safely get in and out of bed, take a shower, navigate stairs, get into a vehicle, etc. Also look into assistance devices like bed rails, grab bars, etc. There are some reasonably priced options, but if affordability is an issue, see if your local government has a lending program for such devices.

As someone (under 50) who trips over their own feet 😂🙄 This was a very welcome video. I’m in UK and the only time I see microwaves above the stove here is in our tiny touring caravans. I don’t understand why putting them up high in north America is so common, especially as generally your houses and kitchens are bigger than ours and you have pantries - not than I’m jealous at all …. Ok hands up, I do get pantry envy 😉

Glass coffee tables are awful. Or coffee tables that have sharp corners. Also, we stayed at my sister-in-laws. It is a small place and both entrances required a key to get out the door. Scary. If you didn’t have a key in your pocket, or the key wasn’t left in a door, you had to hunt one down. 🔥

Garett, you are making such an IMPORTANT point about the microwave! I have a rare form of Multiple Sclerosis. I am gradually getting weaker and cannot reach high any more. Because of the exact reasons you stated, I no longer use it at all. In a previous home, we had a drawer version and we loved it. However we moved from a 6000 sq ft home that we had designed and built. Ten years ago, we bought a very small 1949 home to update because I simply couldn’t walk the distances required in that house. Unfortunately, the microwave is right above the stove and it is a very tiny kitchen. It only has the one wall of cabinets with a range (and microwave) in the middle and a 90 degree turn for a tiny wall of cabinets with the sink (small window over) and the tiniest dishwasher we have ever seen. No cabinets on the opposite wall but a large window. You can stand in the middle and touch each side. I want a beautiful vent hood but where the heck would the microwave go for my husband who still uses it? No pantry in this small home. Thank goodness they had the wood floors carry right into every room. Yes, even the bathrooms. We don’t have any problem and only use a rug when we shower because I have tripping problem. We also had the trend of a very high mattress. Simply changed that over to a normal height and it is wonderful to get into and out of. You have listed so many dangers that we HAD to deal with. Think of the fact that you will age and if not you, your parents!

There’s a reason they are called “throw” rugs. Anyone with a balance issue hates, hates, hates small rugs on hard floors - especially if there is no anti-slip pad under the “throw” rug. Try putting a cane or crutch tip on a small, unanchored rug! Disaster!

Lest anybody get the giggles over the falling in and out of bed accident statistics: I hate to admit it, but just that happened to me last year- as my spinal injury related neuropathie started to kick in, I went to my knees in the middle of the night, just one step away from the foot of my bed. Ramming the edge of my footboard into my underarm, cracking three ribs, plus spectacular bruising. Major ouch! Out with the footboards, in with the motion LED lamps- now I can be confident of well-lit and soft landings. Greetings from Austria

Those microwaves over stoves are scary, cannot believe those are sold. Glad Garret pointed it out. Microwaves go on a counter so boiling liquid spills there, not on you. Low set ovens mean spills in legs and feet. A counter gives an immediate place to drop a boiling hot dish.

Thank you for this, it’s so important to know! I almost had my very own incident with falling onto a corner of my bed frame (syncope episode) but, lucky for me, my dog not only broke my fall, but woke my husband up to help me. As far as the large floor tiles go, one way to avoid slippage is to use textured tiles. When we remodeled our house my husband actually tested the tiles before they were installed by wetting them and trying to slide on them, in shoes, in socks and barefoot. So far no issues.

In a home with young children, I agree about the microwave over the stove thing. Otherwise, I never found the look to be overly offensive in a tastefully done kitchen. Cabinets and countertops are valuable real estate I'm not willing to part with. Not seeing an appliance is always better than seeing it, I just don't see why it gets an 'ugly' label slapped on it in recent years. I find it super convenient having it right where I'm cooking everything else and the design compliments my stove. I'd love to read various opinions about this. Thanks for another great video, Garrett. :)

I always focus on safety and function first in design and decorating. This is one of the initial things you learn in interior design school. Having a microwave above a stove in my opinion is just not the safest thing regardless of age of people. There are better and safer placements. Aesthetically, I don’t think it’s very sophisticated or elegant. I rarely see microwaves above stoves in elevated kitchens, but it is rather a more common standard included element found in tract built homes. Aesthetics in any case is a personal matter which I never fault people on but of course I stand on the opinions I’ve expressed in the video from a safety and aesthetic perspective. Thanks for watching.

I was adamant that I wasn't going to have this but there really is no other option - I guess I could put it in the hallway or the living room? We have a very small kitchen that affords no other place to have a mw. The low profile one we have serves 2 purposes,venting and cooking in the mw. That is the best use of the limited real estate. The large focal point vent hood so popular now, seems to waste a lot of space. You can't store anything up there and it has one function,to vent. It is an aesthetic piece which is fine if you have space to waste.

Garettt thank you for this video. When we renovated 5 years ago I did not have any health issues but I insisted on non slip tiles in the bathroom, wide doors and seamless entry into the showers, all floors are the same level when changing from wood to carpet in the bedrooms etc which have definitely made it easier now that I do have mobility issues. You never know when something can go wrong and all of your points are so valid.

Hi Garrett from Athens Greece! Love your channel, your style and overall vibe! Just subcribed! I m about to finish our family holiday apartment and start with the interior decor coastal chic (with a mediterranean flaire and neoclassical european (athenian) style are what am I going for as we are close to the sea but not on an island. Your advice has been really helpful as to choosing furniture, mixing and matching, colour schemes and of course....safety!

Thanks so much!!! We have a microwave over our stove and I absolutely hate it and can’t wait for our kitchen remodel. The microwave does not even begin to cover the front burner and grease etc just floats everywhere. I can’t wait for a genuine smoke hood. Also, we have a half inch drop-down on our garage concrete where the garage door meets and it is a serious tripping hazard. Anyway, thanks for all the tips❤️

My neighbor has a white tile entry with a step down in tile to more tile. They put bright red tape on the edge as so many people don’t see the change in height. Even though we have been over many times, they instinctively caution us about it. A fall on hard tile can break bones. A university that I worked at built a new student center and the area around the entry was bright white marble and the stairs were in a French curve design. With the sun shining it was blinding and one never knew where the stairs were since they weren’t in the typical straight line. People were tripping all the time and luckily I didn’t need to go there more than once or twice a year. Coming out was even worse when the glare hit you just as you stepped outside. It was only 2 steps so they didn’t put up railings. It was a dangerous design choice.

I have a tiny galley kitchenette and keep my microwave on top of fridge. I only use it for heating up a sandwich. Not crazy about microwaves. I have burgundy carpet and gave up on area rugs a long time ago. Presently changing out the carpet is not an option so I distract with decor at eye level. Plus got lots of real plants. This bideo was very informative. Thank you.

Many families, like mine, got microwaves in the 1970's, and Boomers are living longer and healthier than ever. No peer-reviewed data projecting massive-scale microwave-caused deaths (or cancer either) for us. Seems like we would know something by now. I am much more worried about all the nutty drivers on the road than reheating my dinner.

Legally, we aren’t allowed to remove our carpet because we’re in a condo and someone lives below us and doesn’t want to hear us stomping around above them. I actually appreciate this rule because I also don’t want to hear people stomping on hardwood around me. We literally moved out of our last place because the girl that lived above us didn’t have any rugs on her hardwood floors and would come home drunk at 2 am and throw her stuff down. How do I know exactly when she got home? Because it would bolt me awake and then I couldn’t go back to sleep. She also would wear literal combat boots and walk back and forth for hours doing chores or whatever. Over my head. For hours. Stomp stomp stomp. Anyway, we specifically bought a place that had a rule against bare hardwood floors. We do plan to eventually replace our stained ugly gray carpet, but after buying the condo we are not exactly flush with cash. I feel the need to vehemently defend my choice of rugs on top of carpet lol. I know, I know, just become a millionaire and then you don’t have to live in multiple layer housing. Working on it. That being said, I agree with the microwave above the oven thing. Especially if you have a porcelain stovetop and the installers were worried about how it would crack the stovetop just placing the microwave onto the stove.

@goodgrief888 I feel ya'. I've lived in many apartments over the years, and the noise from the upstairs neighbors was by far my # 1 gripe. I now live in a ranch townhome and the peace and quiet is HEAVEN. Hoping you can improve your living situation sooner than later.

I live in an upstairs apartment and I have this exact issue with the people downstairs. I hear every stomping step they take, hear the kids running around in their boots at 7am before school, it's like I live above a family of elephants.

A very good morning Garrett, Thank you for such an important vlog:) I never knew that big tiles with less grout in a bathroom is a hazard, not that I have it but I was very attracted to it 🙃 The info about the hospital admissions due to bed frame, phewww!! I have personally experienced so many scratches on the shin with the wooden bed frame when we were renting around the fully furnished apartments during our earlier days in the country. Hence I was very clear in my head that I am for sure getting an upholstered bed when we move into our home and that too velvet so that even if I bump the feel should be smooth and not 👹👹👹 And oh yes I too dislike to the core the rug over the carpet. You have a wonderful week ahead and see you midweek 😍🥰

Microwaves are an eye sore. Unfortunately for me I live in a rental apartment and I'm not allowed to remove it from above the stove. I don't utilize it so I have it unplugged. I store bags of popcorn in it. 😊

Sigh. My husband agreed we should reno our kitchen, and with a budget to do high-end. His only must-keeps were the microwave over the oven and the full-depth refrigerator because he thinks they're more functional. I can hear you screaming inside in sympathy.
@GarrettLeChic
@GarrettLeChic 13 дней назад
I understand. These are my opinions but I respect other people’s views even if I don’t agree with your husband regarding the placement of the microwave either from an aesthetic or safety perspective. Since you are doing a high end renovation which will involve significant amounts of money, you might want to show your husband pictures of high end kitchens, perhaps get opinions from in person highly experienced kitchen renovation companies and maybe bring in a couple of high end experienced realtors in your area to discuss what they see in elevated kitchens. Either way, I’m happy to hear you are about to do a renovation you both think is necessary for your kitchen. Its exciting! I’m glad to do a virtual consultation with you both, but at the end of the day I’m not going to suggest a microwave over the stovetop/oven because I don’t think it looks elevated or aesthetically pleasing nor do I think it’s the safest placement for a microwave as you heard in my video.
