It used to be that a rogue video automatically got a like. There was something special. Back in the day making improvised gas masks in a garden shed. 4 dudes sat around learning to play card games. Now I fear this Chanel is going the way of others that have lost populat hosts. I think this current situation demonstrates that what part of what made these videos great. Wasn't just what was being done. Is was the characters doing these things and the chemistry between them. I'm really hoping that somebody can be found to counter Brian's on camera personality that makes modern rogue feel as special as it used to. It doesn't have to be the same as it was, but currently this isn't it

Not trying to be mean with this comment. But in general I started watching Modern Rogue because it was stuff you didn't see anywhere else. Secret number stations, thermite, improvised gas masks, ganzfeld effect. Now we're literally doing an experiment my middle school science teacher did, there's dozens of videos of it on RU-vid, literally some from 10+ years ago. This seems like low hanging fruit (or in this case low hanging pickle 🥒)

@@richardpowell4281 They were the RU-vid version of Mythbusters. Except it was less Bust a myth and more prove a concept...which was basically adjacent to each other. But, to add to @TheAechBomb point, it was like when Mythbusters lost Carrie, Grant, and Tory. The show was still good, but felt like it had lost something. Because it had. Without Cory, Annalise, Jason, etc, the show just doesn't have the feel. I wouldn't say they were the REAL talent, but they were the Country Gravy to biscuits and gravy. Alone the biscuit (Brain) is good. Add the Gravy (The rest of the staff) and it compliments the biscuit and bring it to new levels.

6:46 Sodium emits light because the electricity makes the electrons jump up an energy state. When they come back down, that energy isnt lost, so they emit a photon. You see it on one side but not the other because theres just more energy there. It stops after a while because burn makes a bad conductor

I have a theory about why only one side of the pickle lights up - it's probably the lower half of the pickle that faces downward and is always submerged in brine. So it collects the highest concentration of sodium ions which is where the reaction occurs

I've done this. I was VERY careful because it is absolutely dangerous. I set it up on a ceramic dish outside on my balcony with nothing flammable in the area. And I was VERY careful not to touch anything. I used a surge protector as a switch with my stripped extension cord plugged into that. I was a high school physics teacher and very familiar with electrical safety. A couple of years before I built my own van de graff generator. It smelled terrible, but it looked awesome.

Why is everyone hating on the new guy? He had nothing to do with Jason leaving, he's fun to watch and I actually think he bounces off Brian really well. If you're going to be mad at someone, I think that person should probably be Brian and I think he would understand that people are just really frustrated with the way things were handled.

You may have already thought of this, but maybe the end with the stem, which is essentially a hole, let in more of the salt brine. This would explain the stem end lighting up in both orientations. Sounded good in my head anyway

Small note, incandescent bulbs are mostly manufactured with an inert gas rather than a vacuum. I do beleive that with a vacuum it becomes more efficient and longer lasting.

For incandescent bulbs with tungsten elements, the longevity is actually the other way round: If you have a vacuum inside the bulb, tungsten metal slowly sublimes from the absurdly hot element into vapour, which then condenses on the inside surface of the glass, which is a fair bit cooler, though still hot compared to room temperature. This is responsible for the element eventually snapping once part of it gets too thin, and is what causes the darkening of the bulb over years of use. There are types which have inert gas rather than vacuum in the bulb, though at only a few psi - much less than atmospheric pressure. These are often called "halogen" or "quartz halogen" bulbs because they also contain a small amount of iodine vapour. This reacts with any tungsten vapour to form tungsten iodide, which the element (while switched on and hot) can thermally decompose back into tungsten metal and iodine vapour. So the element is continuously regenerated while the bulb is on, which gives this type a much longer lifespan. Some really large tungsten filament bulbs (in the region of 10 to 20 kilowatt) deal with the darkening in a different way: In addition to the much larger element (made of much thicker gauge wire), they have some tungsten metal granules loose inside the bulb. The idea being that when the bulb is switched off (and after allowing it to cool down), the bulb could be pulled out of its socket and gently shaken, letting the granules move around inside, scraping any tungsten deposits off the inside surface of the bulb.

I’ll admit this is a step in the right direction. However, I’m afraid MR will always be in the shadow of what it once was. Looking back at old episodes showed me just how much Jason was the reason I watched the channel- he just had that energy to him. You can tell there’s some chemistry between Brian and the new guy, but it just misses that je ne sais quoi Jason brought. It just feels like the community is in the middle of a divorce where mom is trying to make everything work at home with her new boyfriend while the community is like “you’re not my dad!” while dad is off chilling, doing his own thing while hunting Sasquatch.

How is it possible to do this video and know so little about how this works? At 9:45 they get close. They keep calling it a sodium arc lamp and seem to miss the point. The light is generated by the arc traveling thru sodium plasma in the arc. The electric current excites valence electrons which then emit a photon when they drop back down their energy quantum levels. The reason the light is that specific yellow is that is the wavelength of photon that corresponds to the energy difference between the excited and stable electron states. The reason only one end lights up is because the arc only happens at one point in the circuit. The current is applied and the juice boils and makes an arc gap which then eventually burns or boils away leading to a change in the gap and loss of arc stability.
