As a restorative "cosmetic" dentist for over 34 years, and who has lectured extensively on the topic, Biomimetic is nothing new. It's just a name someone coined to encompass something we referred to as "conservative cosmetic dentistry". Our goal was to save as much tooth structure as possible. This is in direct opposition to what was, and possibly still is, taught in most dental schools. When I started, placing my first partial coverage non-metal restorations in 1990, there was no fancy name for it. Many dentists in search of better ways to restore teeth were doing partial coverage restorations in the (early) 90's, and not full coverage crowns. That's when indirect resin dentistry took off and that lead to utilizing feldspathic, then leucite reinforced, then lithium disilicate, etc...We just knew, because we did our (own) research mostly, that this type of dentistry was the future, even though many of our colleagues criticized us. We believed in doing direct adhesive pulp capping, which avoided the need for a lot of root canals, etc... Even if the tooth needed a root canal, a study from 1997 cited that root-canaled teeth don't always need full coverage to restore the tooth to function. In fact the study concluded that a direct resin or partial coverage indirect restoration might be the best option. The problem is partial coverage non-metal dentistry is more technique sensitive and most are only concerned with speed and not quality of outcome. Not to mention most insurances won't cover partial coverage and will only cover full coverage restorations. That is why you must educate your patients to what is best and only do the type of dentistry you want in your mouth! In conclusion, Biomimetic is just the latest "fad" name to what a lot of us have been doing for several decades, but if it gets the newer generation of dentists to adapt it, then god bless, our patients deserve it.
Because unscrupulous dentists start the cycle of damage by drilling and filling children teeth when the teeth are perfect and without cavities and designed by nature to last a lifetime....
Thank you for this info, as I seem to be getting ripped off allot lately , possibly by the last dentist who gave me 2 root canals and a double crown(aggacent teeth) and the teeth still hurt. Truely I am quite scared now and don't know where to turn. The pain is getting worse and my fear is, there is infection and my jawbone could be involved. Please email me if you can and let me know where your practice is. Thank you for the wisdom.I need a good and honest dentist.
@@Pesto-64 I agree with several of the commenters. Good dentists are so hard to find. My sister flies from Florida to New York to go to her trusted dentist. I wish an organization like a hospital would control dental practices. I went to a dental office that was carpeted. A young man "dental assistant" didn't know how to insert slides into my mouth. I had to show him. The dentist came in for no more than 1 minute. $250.
Years ago I had an ongoing problem that went on for around 10 years. The doctor kept treating me for very nasty sinus infections that produced a smell that only I could smell. A VA dentist told me that I needed some minor surgery to rid a tooth of infection at the root. The tooth had a root canal many years prior. When he opened it up the infection smell told me that was the source of what was thought to be sinus infections. When I discussed it with the dentist he agreed and showed me an X ray showing a channel through the bone into the sinus created by the infection. He also said this kind of thing can go undiscovered and cause death. I was surprised that in all of those years the multiple doctors that addressed my sinus problem didn't recommend a dentist but just kept saying that I may need a painful sinus cleaning. It's been 40 years since I have had the severe sinus problems that I had prior to the dental surgery.
I had a sinus infection from teen years to age 58when a root canal finally allowed me to breathe through my nose! I think the miracle is that my body, the sinus cavity, could heal after basically a lifelong infection. I practiced breathing, taped my lips shut at night and now have significantly better sleep and health. Why didn’t I address the problem earlier? I didn’t realize what was going on. I do remember thinking “does everyone have nostrils that don’t let air through easily?” No pain was felt until my mid fifties. I didn’t have tooth pain I had upper jaw bone pain but I finally realized, I think it’s a tooth! It was a molar that was bisected by a giant ancient old mercury filling I got about age ten. I had two root canals on molars before the third did the trick. My dentist didn’t believe me and thought this was all in my head( I think). I have thanked him several times for changing my life cuz I can great breathe now. Crazy.
I had severe sinus problems for years. The roots of my upper teeth went into my sinuses. When I got older a couple of my teeth got infected but didn't show up on xray. My ENT dr did a sinus lift and when he did he saw the infection. My dentist finally believed me about the severe pain and rotten smell i had. I now have a full upper implant after having the upper teeth pulled about 2 yrs ago. Haven't had problems since. Often times dr and dentists think everyone is in their office for pain meds. Give me a break. They need better training.
@@boondocks8002 Spotting a junky is not always easy. Back in the day when we all had mercury fillings we had no idea. I don't think dentists back then were stupid. I do think we never know enough including today. I wonder what we are doing today that will show up as, "if they only knew", 40 years from today. Not that its going to bother you or me.
@@davidanderson8469 the evolution of orthodontics went from bands, to brackets to speed brackets. it went from wire bending to nitinol self-straightening wires. bands were, and still are in some cases, used back in the '80's. so, no, the dentist wasn't "wrong". they were using what worked in their hands given the technology at the time.
After getting a crown I've experienced bad breath that i didn't have before. Doctors keep saying they can't smell any odor, but i believe bacteria growth between my tooth and crown has occurred. This video has convinced me its not my imagination.
I was having bad breath since past few months. Later pain started in teeth with root canal and crown. I decided to remove teeth completely and opt for dental implant later. But somehow my bad breath problem completely vanished.
Since I was a kid, I have had a mouth full of fillings. One by one, many of these filled teeth have broken. My dentist is a small town guy, who doesn't do expensive, extraordinary stuff. I'm so lucky to have him. He cleans the broken tooth, puts a metal jacket around the tooth, fills with resin, removes the jacket and shapes the tooth. Approx $100, 15 mins and out. All the teeth he has rebuilt are doing great. My son-in-law, broke a tooth and unfortunately went to another dentist, who insisted he needed a root canal and a crown. (He had zero pain from the broken tooth) Over $3000 and several trips to the dentists for him. His insurance only covered about $100 of that. I'll keep my simple, small town dentist.
Hi! Here is the link to my directory! Within this directory, you'll find health-concious dentists who share similar philosophies with me: livingwellwithdrmichelle.com/directory/
He wants Over $ 5000 to pull a tooth and fill the second one. . Went to another dentist for second opinion. His analysis of what's wrong with the 2 teeth is different from the first one, who, by the way, stood in front of the computer screen viewing the Big picture of both teeth and after awhile turned and asked "what is it I'm looking for"? Neither checked the other teeth and after viewing the X ray both asked which tooth is it giving you trouble?. And I have no other choice, all of the dentists where I live are not any better. Not doing anything about the 2 teeth. Haven't found a good dentist since the qualified one retired. The schools where these quacks are getting degrees from, should be totally shut down.
As an engineer I’m hugely disappointed that traditional dentistry hasn’t materially changed in the last 75 years (or more). The tools have gotten better (drills, etc.) and some of the materials (UV cured epoxy) but the basic methods are the same - amazing that they haven’t improved dental technology and procedures in all that time.
What are you basing that statement on? If you think about it, neurosurgery hasn't changed procedurally that much either. You still have to open up the skull and operate on the brain and its blood supply. Techniques have changed enormously in dentistry following along with advances in other fields like materiel science, imaging and restorative technology and all by light years since the 1980's. But the fundamental diseases being dealt with are the same so those problems haven't gone away. You still have to remove diseased tissue and restore function.
@@zenrand688 i hate to tell you, but dentistry has changed. dramatically in the past decade, much less many years before that. Hardly nothing that i did immediately after dental school (2001 grad) is being done the same way now. i mean we have robots that place implants! lol
I have lost so many teeth through bad dentistry. Too much amalgam in my mouth, root canals, and crowns, and the teeth are just breaking off, one by one. The more teeth that break, the worse it becomes, because I cannot chew my food properly, and it not through bad oral hygiene, that I am losing teeth, but through often unnecessary dentistry, done over the years. Not all dentists are honest about what needs to be done, and they definitely cannot make money, if you only go for a cleaning every two years. I don’t trust dentists anymore. I am going to have extractions done where the teeth have broken off at the gum, and probably implants or dentures, (which I don’t see myself coping with). I am devastated that I have lost so many teeth, which have fractured badly! I wish there had been more dentists like you 55 years ago. Drilling and filling, root canals and crowns, was the name of the game, those days!
Same n I'm only 30 y old dfk... most ppl now regardless of speciality they would call it the industry and try their best to make money regardless if it's a human life or not, thnkx to capitalism and central money flow system... worse if they see y have a 90% insurance coverage they would just aim for the most complicated procedure...
Same. I don't trust them anymore, but when that tooth hurts a lot? I am half way through another root canal and wish I had tried almost anything else. I put up with it for 5 years. I probably should have gone to a witchdoctor. I do think most of them try. Find one who is honest before anything else, I think.
@jack spratt I hope you see this and get the roots pulled by an Oral Surgeon and not by a dentist. This is because a few years ago a dentist broke and damaged my upper jaw while pulling an incisor tooth root which had broken off at the gumline due to it being brittle from having had a root canal treatment a decade before. Incisor tooth roots are extremely long and the dentist would have known this and was also aware that it was almost impossible to pull due to there being so little to grab on to and his Pliars flying off it. The pain from the bone damage following the extraction was unbearable for five months and apart from shaving off bits of bone he didn't help me. Finally I realised that most of my pain was coming from another tooth which had been partially disconnected during the extraction due to the bone having been bent and damaged. I still trusted the dentist at that stage and asked him to extract that tooth which he did but while doing so he also deliberately put extreme, agonising pressure on a lower incisor on the other side of my mouth causing it to be painful for years. When I went back to him for help about this due to my bite being off he became verbally and physically aggressive and threatened to damage the upper tooth. He was wearing some sort of weird gas mask reminiscent of WW2 and only his angry psyco eyes were visible.
I feel pain in all my root canals, but it's frustrating going to the dentist because they keep saying, "You're not supposed to feel anything where you got a root canal because the root canal kills the nerve." Yeah, but I do feel pain.
I finally have a name for it... DENTAL PTSD! I would never have thought it serious enuf to be called ptsd. I was told to stop being a baby, nevermind the fact that the first time I was taken to the dentist I had to have two absessed molars pulled. After being told what was happening I remember jumping out of the chair and nothing else. I'm now in need of periodontal work and am praying to find a doctor who will knock me out.😬😢
i hate to tell you, but you don't get dental abscesses if you've looked after your teeth properly. so don't be blaming anyone else. likewise with periodontal work. that's bacterial progression/inflammation because of plaque accumulation over time. again, no-one but yourself to blame. once you have it it becomes difficult, and more expensive, to turn around.
I have used that term several times since having serious dental work two years ago. Still in pain but terrified to go to the dentist!! It was that horrible!
Wow…20 years ago, my two back upper left molars were cracked on the very exterior only. From eating hard candy! I REFUSED root canals b/c I had read how dangerous they were. I verified the center of the teeth, were not cracked, and asked for the crowns only. She was not happy, but did what I asked. Fast forward to last week, broke off a corner of the porcelain crown..when she removed the crown, she said the tooth that was still there was solid and healthy. She just made a new crown. I was very happy that I never had root canals in those molars!
I was 34 where post cancer treatment, first 15 teeth and subsequently at age 36 when an additional 4 more teeth were removed due to bone density and marrow failure. The roof of my mouth was completely carved out in order to fit a set of monstrous dentures into instead. I am 38 and I am ashamed of how I look and feel in public. I don’t eat much anymore and my wish to live beyond Remission has become more of a Quality of Life dilemma. There was a now deceased Dentist in my area. That after the root canal was done. He placed 100% pure silver rods down into the root canals empty spaces. Before putting on the crown. We had a TRUSTED dentist we had gone to for years. After a checkup he told us we both needed crowns. While I was stressing over how we would pay for them and because my friend raved about how good her dentist was, we decided to get a second opinion. The woman we went to did thorough exam. The number of crowns we both needed was reduced to ZERO. Even a holistic dentist can be a scam artist. Glad you listened to your gut! 👍
I've had two shady dentists. One dentist said, your bottom back teeth show some cracks. We need to put three crowns in and then walked away. I asked the dental assistant to show me on the xrays where the cracks are, and she couldn't find them. What a greedy vulture. I never went back there.
Same thing happened to me. I had a feeling of impending doom, panicked and had an asthma attack so I had to stop. So scary. But I had to have them pulled as an alternative. The more I read about these things the more I think you cannot win. Even implants have all kinds of side effects.

@@jasongarcia2140 Are you a dentist? Bc I (and others on here) have decades of experience using evidence-based dentistry. Bypassing every root canal for an implant is NOT evidence-based. Also. there is evidence-based science? and there is junk science? Most of us utilize the former, while she utilizes the latter. You certainly have the right to believe whatever you like. But she espouses many non-truths, which are easily disproven by simple peer-reviewed studies.
@@jasongarcia2140The reason that so many dentists have responded is bc this is a very large platform. She is speaking matter-of-factly about a subject where she is 100% wrong. But it’s a “feel-good” message that validates those that have (previously) had bad experiences/outcomes at the dentist. It paints her as the savior, and the vast majority of other dentists as simply ignorant and/or money-hungry. There is a lot of “gray” in dentistry, meaning each dentist may have a different opinion about when and how a procedure is performed. There is nothing wrong with that. For example, one dentist may say you need a filling on a tooth, while another will say you need a crown. That is subjective and many times the right vs wrong answer comes down to each individual dentist’s philosophy. However, there are some things that are NOT debatable. The science will either back it up or refute it. That is the case with several things that she has mentioned here. So no matter how many times she (or anyone) states a mistruth? It doesn’t make it true. And we (as dentists) have an obligation to call it out whenever we see/hear it.
Having been a Dental Laboratory Technician making crowns & bridges for 40 years, this was really nice to see. It has seemed that the options of ‘Inlays’, ‘Onlays’, ‘3/4 crown’ has been somewhat ‘old school’ that was far and few between for the restoration during my career. Nice to see someone that still prescribe’s to saving tooth structure when able for such. The new technic of milling ‘all ceramic’ from a ceramic block maybe used, not sure why not, however in general I have only seen full crowns, all depends on the scanning capabilities. Then you could x-ray through it to see how the restoration is holding up on future checkups. The few inlay’s, etc., that I did was early in my career and high gold content alloy was used. Changes of new technology that has been developed. Very nice video, Doctor!!!
At 73 I was having a cleaning at a Periodontist office. Hugenist said oh you need a root canal and an appointment an hour later at an endodontist. He drilled through a crown and did the root canal. Then sent me to my regular dentist for a filling! Ripped off before I knew what was happening! They scratch each other's back and share the wealth. Won't happen again.
An asymptomatic dead tooth (no pain) needs extraction or root canal before the lesion grows and affects normal healthy bone and teeth. An x-ray will confirm. Root canal treatments done properly will sterilize the root area with laser and/or flush with sodium hydrochloride. I had 12 gold crowns places 50 years ago while I was a student in dental school. Your ceramic crowns half life is 10-12 years and then you get to do it all over again. Cement keeps them in place and as the material expands and contracts with hot and cold foods/drinks that expansion differs from the tooth structure and breakdown begins to occur day one. Gold and tooth structure expand and contract at the same rate and degree. Gold is the perfect material. Your getting lots of half truths in this lecture, I'm semi-retired but still see patients I treated with Root Canals and properly placed crown 4 + decades ago. How is that for efficient cost in treatment. Compared to doing it over at 40 then 52 the 64 then 78 and finally 90 if you still have them.
@@mmike76 Gold is the gold standard. People should use it in their mouths instead of wearing it. I just noticed John Lennon had gold fillings in the clip on the roof top of Apple HQ in the Beatles last performance. I never noticed that before.
Yep. My dentist referred me to a periodontist for a consult. Went for the consult and made an appointment for the procedure which was several months away. I eventually canceled the appointment and didn't want the procedure. So on my next visit to my dentist, he says, I received a note from the periodontist that you canceled your appointment, and I said correct, I dont want that procedure done. Dentist with 33 years experience here. I don't feel you explain sufficiently in this video that: 1. a necrotic pulp absolutely requires a root canal if you want to save the tooth, 2. If it's my mouth, I would much rather do an RCT/ crown than an implant. In fact I had RCT/ crown done on my lower left first molar 43 years ago and it is still there. 3. There is nothing "biomimetic" about what you are doing. That is just a fancy marketing catch phrase. A better phrase would be " conservative" dentistry. But in fact doing these sort of preps you have much less retention than standard preps with the margins near the gumline. I have seen many of these conservative onlays fall out over the years. " Enamel" bonding is a bit of a myth as you need at least 1mm reduction for zirconia or any other modern material so you're already in dentin. If your dentist is telling you that your necrotic tooth needs to be pulled out and an implant supported crown is better, you're being had. What's biomimetic about that?

Retired now dentist after 34 years of practice. Totally misleading information. Video of receding gingiva obviously due to sub gingival calculus (tarter for the general public) and has absolutely nothing to do with root canals or crowns. We also know that sensitivity and pulpal death can be due to the trauma of caries (decay) removal so close to the nerve and has nothing to do with remaining bacteria. It would be interesting to know how many implants she does in a year. And as far as cost goes, extraction, bone grafting, and implant placement and restoration is at least twice as expensive as root canal and crown. Do root canals fail? Yes. But having the root canal done by a very competent endodontist increases the likelihood of success. Do implants fail? Yes. Maybe her next video can share the truth about implant failure.
All the teeth I had root canals and crowns lasted about 20 years, but later in life all of them cracked, got abscessed, and had all pulled. As much money as I spent on canals and root canal cost about $1600 per tooth x 11 (all due to chronic sinus infections). Now all 11 have been pulled and I spent $1100 on partial plate.
@jx14aby @jx14aby Sorry so long, but here are my replies to both: Actually, I love the partial plate. I found a small town dentist that can still get the metal plates, which are much better for me. They suction great with no glue or anything. They are an absolute perfect fit. And it took me two plastic(?) plates and $$ to find a dentist that used a supplier that made them. It was very difficult to find a dentist who used the metal. I don't know how many times they looked at me like I was nuts for asking for such an 'old timey' partial with metal. I have talked to a couple of coworkers that have the partials (that pink plastic) into getting them also because they constantly complain of them flapping, using glue, and not suctioning. And they visited my dentist and are now set up and happy. Regarding implants, yes, my oral surgeon discussed it with me when these started being marketed. I have some issues, though. I have terrible sinus problems, whereas my sinuses lay on top of the teeth roots. When I have my teeth pulled, my sinuses rip, and they are stitched and pushed back into the open cavity before stitching the hole the tooth left. One oral surgeon actually got his pinky finger and pushed the sinus as far as he could toward my septum. Talk about pain and I was awake. I haven't returned to him. Going back further, in my mid30s, I worked at a state medical research hospital, and a dental school was on campus, so I took advantage of asking the docs lots of questions. And, the Chairman was a really nice person and actually, I guess you could call it his own research as he was very interested in resolving strange things and teaching his students.. He always called his residents in to get updates, and they ran images for his residents to learn and diagnose. At this time, i was having problems, and he wanted to find out why there were no physical signs until it was too late and how it could be diagnosed early. My teeth looked healthy, no cavities, etc and then months later, they were abscessed at the root (and painful) and had to be pulled.. the roots were rotted, and he said he didn't know how I took the pain. The image would show nothing until it was too late to save the tooth. Later, better equipment arrived that would show a much better image of the sinuses and inflammation early on.. Dr. Gatewood, (now retired chair), found out that due to the structure of my sinuses resting in this area, with chronic sinuses and allergies I suffer with, my sinuses were rotting the root from the inside out and causing the abscess. This chairman told me to always share this information with my dentists because it is significant to know this due to the ripping of the tissue during an extraction.Early on, I dealt with being passed back and forth among Allergy docs, GPs, Dentists, ENTs and a year would pass before the green gross pus would begin draining at the gums and /or the middle inside of the tooth collapsed in the middle where the rot eventually came through and I could actually move the tooth. At this time is when the image showed the inflammation and, of course, by sight, it was decided that the tooth needs to be removed quickly after RXing antibiotics. I never ran fever with any of these infections, but I have never run a fever in my life except with red measles at 10 yrs old. I am not sure if it was the equipment they were using or their knowledge, but Dr. Gatewood, the Chair of Dental School, found my problem (structure of the sinuses lay on my roots, and my teeth decay from the inside out). I have also had some sinus surgery later, but I guess that's like plastic surgery where it eventually falls back to where it was because that's what happened. Now, in our state, with the bad quality of healthcare , it is almost impossible for any doctor to run images or additional testing due to insurance and mandates. And, the referral system is so bad due to: if a "problem patient' arrives, they refer over and over until more than a year or two passes patients can or do die waiting in the process. Here, where I live, since the ACA, insurance and incentives/rebates dictate patients' treatment. I learned the significant impact of decisions made based on mandates and financial incentives at the hospital. Yet there are some doctors that will go against the system and make it happen for the patient because I found one. I have a good oral surgeon, and he listens to me now after he experienced the sinus repairs. Yes, he looked at me like I was an idiot the first time I told him, but now he does not. Now, I also have osteoarthritis, and the bone images I had years ago show holes in my bones, including my facial and jaw bones. I am not sure about what caused this, but I did take Fosamex during my late 30s after a total hysterectomy. So, the implants are not suggested by my doc. Sorry so long. Thank you.
@boxsterbenz4059 haha being that the vehicle was made in the USA , it lasted more than 20. Watch out, however, those that jest at others' misfortunes tend to circle back at the ones that originated the jest. Just sayin'
Where have you been all my LIFE? To change my issue with childhood Root Canals, and pockets of infection and real pain, was what My Grandpa said to me: Jeff, you eat all the garbage your mom buys you and let me tell you that if you ate the box it came in, it would be better for you than the garbage in the package. He said you need to eat real food, meat, eggs, and eliminate all the Sugar, processed or real, as it is a DRUG and will feed all the bad bacteria and you will get bad bacteria fighting with the good bacteria. After i went to a less than 4 grams of carbohydrates a day, and guess what? Within about two weeks no more pain in my teeth, and no more farts, no more scumming feeling on my teeth, no more smelly breath and tons of happy with no more DRUGS (SUGAR) that took me on a high where my body over compensated to a LOW...so my emotional stability went to shit. Now It's so good and no meds or sickness for about 34 years now. NOPE not a flu, strep, or any sickness. : ) We take in more sugar in one big pop, than we did in a year back before candy. We only ate sugar at the end of the year, when fruit was available, which caused us to store energy for the winter so we survived. Sugar is a DRUG and our body has a way to protect us from too much sugar. When I put kids on a real human diet, all their sickness goes away, and I also give them back the love of LIFE: FUN.
Amen CARNIVORE/KETOVORE it really changes life for the better mentally and physically healing. No more a prisoner of the food and pharma industry. Stay away from processed food and that includes oils. Eat animals fats and animals food your medication will go to almost non to zero medication.
At 18, I was involved in a very serious accident. I was thrown out the driver’s door window on impact. I was in front passenger seat. I cracked so many teeth. When they brought me out of the coma (head injuries) I had gravel & broken teeth in my mouth. Just wanted to say I’ve done everything possible to keep my teeth. I only completely lost 3. I had my molar break vertically into the root. All this to say, my teeth are very important to me. In 1995, I began slowly removing the mercury and 😢it was difficult. So in 2023/24 I had those two empty places filled with implants. I’m so glad! I quit biting my tongue! But only one dentist in the last 60 years was mean & a bad guy to me, just trying to get all the money he could without even looking at patient. Now I go to the dental school for treatment because I trust them with all the students and doctors working together I feel it’s best for all my teeth problems. To step out and be the new guinea pig NO! No!
@@rjbartun, I notice all kinds of channels doing it lately, or having little ringing and other sounds. It just can't be good for us. Very little on YT is.
I had a root canal done at the dentist's recommendation. At another time, while she was doing a "clean", she accidentally hit that tooth and I flinched. She scolded me. Next I know, the tooth is cracked. She even tried to make it my fault. I had to have it extracted. That was the last she saw me. Everytime my tongue goes to that space I feel angry.😠
@@boxsterbenz4059 are you doubting their experience? You weren't there. They may have sensitive, thin enamel. I've had aggressive, even sadistic dental hygienists (known in my community by people with the same dentist as I have) who does a tortuous scraping and but is not careful with sensitive gums so that I emerged bloody and feeling I most of my enamel was compromised. The older you get the thinner the enamel.
I needed a few crowns because the tooths cracked and there was significant decay. At that point, cracks and decay, you are better off with a crown. My mom had some crowns in her 50's and they are still holding up at 85. Good enough for me.
Also what you eat (or don't eat is a big factor). I just got my first crown at 53 and I am not going to eat anything hard ever again. I refuse to get any root canals. In fact I have a tooth that will be pulled at the end of Sept. because the only other option is a root canal. No thank you.
I was a Navy dentist for 30 years and not particularly constrained by time or money in providing the best treatment for my patients. Inlays and onlays were taught at my dental school in the 1960s. Along with the widespread introduction of fluoride and preventive dentistry in the 60s and 70s, more conservative restorations were encouraged. With respect to restoring badly broken down teeth, a rule of thumb was if the restoration was going to support the tooth, a crown should be considered. If the remaining tooth structure could support the restoration, a more conservative approach should be considered. For questionable teeth, the last thing the patient and doctor want is a $300-$400 restoration to fail when a better choice would have been a crown in the first place. BTW pulp caps have been a standard treatment for decades. It must be understood that some painful teeth have irreversible pulpitis and after pulp capping has been tried to no avail, a root canal is the standard of care.
Retired Dentist here of 42 years in the field. I agree with the other DDS here that this information is misleading. Endodontics, root canal treatment , has advanced dramatically through the years and particularly specialists in the field are highly adept in management of accessory canals with rare likelihood of spread to the rest of the body. My practice was in a retirement community and I saw multitudes of seniors with root canals and crowns doing great after decades of service chewing and painless function and without residual infection. On the flip side I have seen many implants failing and being lost with additional destruction of bony jaw tissue. Nothing in dentistry is perfect, there are compromises always. Each individual and situation requires careful consideration and evaluation in tune with the patients needs and desires. I would never have an extraction if a root canal and crown were feasible given the surrounding gum and bony tissue were healthy.
@@sukawey6584 as a retired dentist of 44 years that practiced fee for service and not corporate, educated in conservative restorative dentistry, what she is saying is nothing new, inlays are not new, conservative dentistry is not new. Techniques and new imaging have improved predictability. The largest threat to dentistry is profit centered corporate vs the traditional fee for service model. Honesty and compassion, treating patients as human beings, and staff that reflect my feelings enabled me to practice what patients needed, rather than what the insurance company said they needed. After 44 years my patients were friends
That "advanced" endodontics led to me losing 2 teeth. When dentists convince you to trust them, but then file your cracked & "small cavity" tooth down to the dentin to put an expensive porcelain crown on, only to have it fail within just less than 5 years and have to be extracted... and only THEN do I learn that lighter and far more conservative options existed that were never offered, that could have saved those teeth... I find that I cannot trust dentists... especially "advanced endodontics" types. I'll trust Dr Michelle's advice over yours now, any day.
Wrong! I am a dentist of 34 years. By "doing great" you mean they have no symptoms. If you take 3D, you will see the real amount of infection, that is not painful. Dentistry is the only profession that believes leaving a dead body part in the body is a good idea. Gangrene spreads, and that is why the treatment for death has ALWAYS been amputation.
I have cranial nerve affected because you can cause palsy, Aphasia, loss of swallowing. It made my gum receed & the next tooth root was exposed which is now open to air and food. You can't regrow lost gums.
Thank you Doctor for this information, it is very validating to me. I had 10 teeth removed and 4 bridges done at the age of 15 or so, 50 years ago. My dental situation has been a source of problems, shame and constant financial drain. I have learned from experience about root canals and crowns, and I particularly hate bridges, dentists do not understand...
God, I wish I heard this four years ago. Our dentist suggested crowns for my four year old son, and they asked me to leave the room so my son would behave better before the procedure. NO, he’s been traumatized since! He HATES the dentist and I never understood why. They dig around a tooth to glue the caps on?! I wanted to save his teeth, and that’s how they sold it to me, but instead they drilled off his enamel. If I knew these things, I wouldn’t have agreed! They ruined his little teeth and his peace of mind, and like she said, one cap has already popped off. Over $1000 spent for an unnecessary procedure!
That is heart-breaking, and the compassion part of medicine/dentistry obviously was missing; nitrous oxide with local anesthesia would have been the answer, of course; i am so sorry that happened to your little boy; it will take some time to overcome that; not sure a 4yo needs anything in this conversation whatsoever, it could go ten years and not be an issue I think - right?
I got this done at around 17 years old. Im being charged to renew the whole darn tooth $5,000. Its so depressing. And I have an infection. Its been a decade. Its just too much money :(. If my mother hadnt taken me I wouldve been better off. My other sister never saw a dentist and shes got the whitest, full teeth. And i went to the dentist everytime they wanted to get paid. I feel so scared. My healths on the line.
4 Year old don't need crown Their tooth will fall out after they become adult anyway 🤦 My back tooth fall out because of cavities when I'm still in junior high school, and they grow again
Wow! The dentist suggested crowns on a four year old to save his ‘baby teeth’ as opposed to waiting a couple of more years for his permanent teeth to come in. I find that so difficult to believe, but if you say its true then it must be 🤔
I’ve avoided the dentist bc a woman really ruined my two side molars 😢😢 I have the silver stuff and I didn’t even have cavities in them!? It was “the beginning signs of cavity” and she botched me. In the end I said just pull one bc it cracked off anyway 😢 ugh this is MUCH NEEDED EVERYWHERE. What a genius
Ugh, so many of them are like this and the sad thing is you can't tell what they're doing in your mouth. I work for a company that sells and repairs dental equipment and dental supplies and I can tell you that many customers are cheap and default on their accounts. The managers often put holds on accounts because they owe tens of thousands of dollars. Plus Dave Ramsay has said that he believes a dental degree is one of the most overpriced college degrees out there. So, they leave dental school with all this debt (and buying equipment like chairs and crown machines is literally like buying a new luxury car) so they have to make the money back somehow and patients are the ones paying the price, literally. Also you should see the luxury and sports cars they drive. My last dentist suddenly told me I needed two crowns after several years of good checkups or only needing something minor done so I dumped him and am seeking out a new office to get a second opinion.
Don’t ever get “silver” crowns or fillings. They are approximately 50% mercury. They will tell you it’s safe as long as you aren’t allergic. It’s mercury, it’s about 8x as poisonous as lead.
Is deep tissue cleaning is needed especially when you have controlled diabetes and no estrogen in later years of your life when you’re highly susceptible to infections and tooth exposures for decay?
Great video 😊 Thank you for posting! There is also another more proactive approach to consider. I developed a sore molar last year 2023 in June. It was sore to chew and tender to floss. I went to my dentist to have it checked and she said it was a large cavity below the gum line and was deep and extremely close to the nerve. She started to drill but after 5 minutes I couldn’t withstand the pain.( i have high pain tolerance)! She suggested, as you said, a root canal or pull the tooth and replace it with an implant. I decided in that moment to wait for a few months to make the decision. I immediately embarked on a carnivore diet only eating red meat, eggs, butter, a little dairy and small amount of fruit. I ate 2 meals per day. After 6 months it wasn’t sore to chew on or floss anymore!! Sugar is bad, starchy carbs are bad, processed foods and seed oils are ruining our health. FYI I’m still carnivore and noticing other amazing things changing with my body. Inflammation is cleared up, RA in my hips and hands has almost completely cleared up, sciatica has almost cleared up also 😊
Yes. It has been known since 1970s that mono and disacharides cause cavities. I completely removed sugars from my diet and all my dental pain is gone. I had to lose a tooth to root cannal fracture to start researching on cavities.
I have some root canals, some since 6 years ago and others since longer Maybe 10+ years and I don’t have any issue with them. They were done properly with an apex locator.I go to check ups every year and the bone around them looks fine without any infection. Also my health is perfeclty fine. I would rather keep my teeth than extract them and place an implant instead.A natural tooth is way better than an implant Even if it has a root canal. What matters is that the root canal is properly done,in my opinion.
@@athenachristinemusic Thats the part that really really pi$$es a person off. That someone who I put my trust into...( and not just any someone, a fvcking supposed medical professional)...lied to me and performed a procedure that increases my risk of loosing my teeth...and I had to pay that person to do this damage. That is beyond infuriating to me.
Although I have tragic problems with my teeth that affected deeply my finances and emotional health for 20 years, i knew by reading an article about an American dentist long ago, from the 50's that was refereed as "the best dentist in the world" that root canals are a disaster- he removed root canals from people on wheelchairs and they return to walk, he attached root canals removed from people to rats and they died, he claimed that infections under root canals cannot be healed because antibiotics do not work on dead organs, so bacteria is flowing into the blood stream and get stuck in the joints of the body creating many many diseases. when a dentist offers me a root canal i run from that office for my life, literally.
@@ancaandreea9859amazingly I haven’t needed a root canal but I have 2 crowns and need 6-8 more. But if they said I needed a root canal I guess I’d get it.
If you've already had rip canals and then crowns cause they don't last either. Then your choice may only be to get implants are regrowing of the teeth which they do in other countries already.
I had a tooth that was treated with ozone and a filling was placed. Two years later it is sensitive to cold and hot. I use ozone based toothpaste as well for a year now. Your approach is definitely better than the common dentistry, however now I have decided to ask Jesus to heal my teeth and to give me new teeth where I have some missing. I am standing on the promise that His word is healing to our bones, and that I am healed by his wounds. Updates to come with good news. Sometimes we have to wait in order for our faith to be tested. I am willing to wait than to have more needles jabbed into my gums and more drilling. I am done with that.
🙏🙏🙏…I also use xylitol gum…or mints…please check into this see what you think…I buy the PUR Brand….also there are certain vitamins that are good for the teeth, vitamins C and D3…
I'm with you on trusting God for all of my medical needs. I am holding the faith that my teeth will be replaced. I had no idea my mouth would reject dentures. I just can't deal with the unnatural any longer. I go with faith alongside you.
Thank you for this video. I’m glad my algorithm chose to sent you to me. I’m also very happy dentistry has evolved. I was a certified dental lab technician with my own lab for 18 years in the Chicago area. I need someone holistic and progressive. You don’t list any dentists in my area but I’ll search one down. Everyone wants to do a root canal and crown but I know better. I made composite inlays and onlays back in the 80s. Lots of them. I had to quit the business because I ran out of patience for my client dentists that were in the job for the wrong reasons.
I stumbled upon this video, but it is already almost 10 years ago that I have done a root canal due to persisting pain and swelling on my right molar at the base of the teeth where the teeth meets the gums. I had visited several dentists to address the pain, but all of them told me they couldn't see any cavities or infection. As a last resort, I went ahead with the final dentist's advice to perform a root canal, and it was done successfully. Since then I don't feel any pain anymore not only at problematic site, but also the other side of my jaw which used to be sensitive is not anymore. However, the main contributing factor I suspect is diet. Back then I was eating high sugar low protein diet, snacks and desserts were almost a staple to stave off my hunger. My teeth would be randomly painful and gums swell at no apparent reason, even though I religiously brushed my teeth every night. I have came a long way since then and changed my diet a lot. Now I eat hearty meals with sufficient nutrients, ensuring that my stomach is full after each meal, and this helped me to break my habit of reaching for snacks and desserts outside of my feeding window. Just like clockwork, my teeth stopped giving me problems. No more sensitivity issues, no gum swelling, no random throbbing pain. No special treatment is done to my teeth since then, only simple brushing every night. If only I knew back then before I performed my root canal, I would have perfect teeth by now.
Not the whole truth tho. There is also “Gutta Percha,” in them. Which is Latex Rubber they are installing in your mouth, Permanently!!! 😫 😱 😫 Latex Rubber is a known Toxin, period! The line they fed everyone is that some people are allergic to it and some are not, is a Big Fat Lie! In time, it slowly kills people, mimicking many Major Diseases! 😱☠️😱 One almost took my life! Put me into Full Blown Seizures!!! Had to fight to keep my Life!
Thank God you've finally figured out how to save teeth! My sons dentist told us that he needs 3 root canals. I'm so glad to hear this info. I wish this was available when I was younger. I got a root canal w/a bridge which caused me to lose 3 teeth. Then I ended up with bone loss which needed surgery and implants. It was outrageously expensive too!
Why on earth would you let a dentist put gold on your teeth? That is terrible looking, unnecessarily expensive, and soooo stereotypical. Come on, be better than that.
@@ShadeIsLikelyI had porcelain crown and my gums have been bleeding so they had to be removed and I had the only option to use gold I hate it but it was the only way I can preserve my tooth.

Plus, high doses of local anesthetic could cause strokes, along with turning the head severely left or right for these lengthy procedures. best thing i did for my dental health is when i went full carnivore diet. zero carbs/sugar, never had any pains/ssues after that and brush occassionally with baking soda , and brush regularly with nothing on the toothbrushi think my oral microbiome has changed and i think they are protective
Zero carbs...fine (well almost fine). Zero sugar...fine. Carnivore diet? You have much to learn. You're caught up in a monkey-see, monkey-do fad that can ultimately be very costly to your health.
@@petesaria-hf1xh the truth is nobody really knows. sugar/carb and anti meat studies are bought and paid for, and theres not enough modern carnivore studies to date. but we do have historical evidence that support it. in the end its all a gamble and decision we make for ourselves. all i know is that early humans were on a predominantly carnivore diet(in some cases purely carnivore diet) and they thrived, majority of the skulls found had perfect dental health with wide aligned arches despite having no dentists, fossil records also show that at the height of humans being carnivore they were taller and had larger brains and lived an average lifespan of 120 years if they werent earten by a tiger first. in the history of humans we know that there were times we ate predominantly meat, adn also ate purely meat, but there was never a time or place where humans ate purely plants and survived. when humans ate purely meat like the eskimos they not only survived they thrived. its only when eskimos started eating processed modern platbased food that they began having heart disease etc
@@petesaria-hf1xh I think that a lot of folks think any drastic diet is a way to live and as you said there will be consequences.. BUT our current high sugar, highly processed diet isn't good either, certainly not for teeth. My gma lived to be 103 and she was always moderate with foods, didn't overeat and didn't smoke or drink alcohol. She didn't formally workout but was active in her daily routine. If I asked her how she was doing she'd say "fair to midling". She was born in 1898. She didn't have great eyesight at 99 and missed a step down into my livingroom so fell but she popped right back up! No injuries! no broken bones.(we were much more scared than she was! I'll never forget it) but she also lived with a purpose-to help others-and she is sorely missed! I think we need to study all the factors that promote healthy teeth/bodies. I appreciate this doctor's alternative.
It is just so hard to find a good and honest dentist. I just went through a root canal with one dentist. During that root canal, I could tell that the dentist was having problems as he seemed to move his stool around faster and he was bumping into the dentist chair. He also left Smith's instruments in my mouth which bumped into my teeth when his hand struck the instruments. One week later he told me that the root canal did not go well and there was one intact route. He offered to refer me to a Root canal specialist who performed an additional root canal. To this day. I can still feel that tooth. I'm losing Trust in dentists. This has cost a lot of money and discomfort.
One of the bad ones I had was playing heavy metal while he drilled off my tooth. I was raised to be so accepting and kind that I didn't even dare to say something! Somewhere I have hope that there are good ones also, there are rare however, like friends and good employers. Proper research is needed but I also don't know how to vet a good dentist, I have poor judgement when it comes to this.
My mom worked in the dental field and is now passed, but I so wish that she would have known about this method. I moved from the USA to Australia and the dentists here don’t do as well at cleaning my teeth here. I used to have a dental hygienist clean my teeth now is the Dentist and it’s $280 just for a cleaning here every six months I go in. It is so hard to find a dental hygienist anywhere that I’ve lived here in Queensland Australia also in New South Wales Australia. And I do not understand why dentistry is so expensive. Understand that there is a lot to know and learn but I grew up watching my Mom go to college and go to classes and seminars which she was an expanded duty hygienist that also did bands in brackets as well as malfunction therapy for speech problems. I’m happy that things are changing in the dentistry field, but it still blows my mind how expensive it is to have any procedure done in a Dentist office.
They charge as much as they dare to because there are no regulations to keep checks and balances on dental services. Yes, there are cowboys out there just as there are in cosmetic and private health clinics.
Look at some of the info on using xylitol in chewing gum and toothpaste. Some of the info shows that xylitol consumes the sugars that cause cavities and your enamel may be able to regenerate just like bone tissue does. It also prevents plaque so fewer cleanings are needed.
Thank you Dr. Sometimes it is more frustrating when your spouse is the one who has to do the crown and without any education, he would just simply trust the dentist and say ok. I'd try my best to tell him whatever i can in my limited understanding of how crowns work but without my own eyes seeing the condition of his tooth, i cannot also ascertain that he didn't need a crown, just a filling or onlay. I supposed we cannot also be Karens and insist on going to our spouses' appointments and ask all these questions to the dentist, can we? I don't think the dentist like it when there is a spouse speaking and asking behalf of the patient, and not the patient himself.
Over 41 years in dentstry. I was very reluctant to enter this forum & espouse my observations of people entering the forum on opinions justly or unjustly. I was SO privleged to work on some of the most wonderful people one could imagine. Having said that I learned in my experienced some people come "armed" with information on dentistry that need more reflection. I immersed myself into Dr. Michelle's forum on her thoughts of the "downs" of RCT's & crowns. There were some issues I felt needed addressing. Opinions, but I will always feel properly done RCTs , properly done crowns (when accurately indicated) render ultimate dental health. As one person noted in opinions, these sub-specialties done by qualified endodontists & prosthodontists will maximize the chances of success. It should be pointed out, dentistry like medicine is not a 100% success profession. I was privileged to have a Board certified endontist & maxillofacial prosthdontist in my family that I could refer to (I just felt ethically right to do so). I think these forums have there place but feel people should ask their dentist good , well thought out questions before any invasive treatment . There is a book: 'The Death of Expertise' -Tom Nichols- ... in it the author reflects about how the public should arm themselves with good information & knowledge before confronting professionals with something they know little or nothing about. Let me conclude that dentistry was something I felt/feel near & dear about.
In 1984, when I quit drinking, I was a full blown alcoholic, my teeth were in very bad condition. They began to hurt so I saw a dentist. I had 2 dental insurance policies so money was not a factor. He said “I can save most of these if you’re willing to go through the pain and trouble”. I said “sure” so we started root canals and crowns. Now, 40 years later, my teeth have started breaking off. Another dentist told me all my remaining crowns have decay underneath. We need to remove those and save what we can so we can do partials instead of full dentures. That’s where we’re at. I’m 81 and still sober. 40 years. Now for the first time I can see what happened and why. I wish my first dentist had known this.
So, you are complaining that your teeth only lasted 40 years after having them fixed? Would you complain after having your car painted and driving it every day for 40 years and now it is getting rusty?
I am so glad I've waited so long to get to a dentist. I had these thoughts but didn't know some dentists agreed with me. Thank you for your kindness and wisdom.
Oh my gosh. 😦 Hearing this and knowing the severe infection I acquired in my entire upper right quadrant sometime following a root canal and crown, I strongly believe this and the in depth dental work done is a direct cause of the sudden onset of my tinnitus .... which hit me just a couple weeks after my dentist attempted to drain my infection. My entire face swelled on the right side. My eye was swollen shut, and I was SICK. THEN, it drained to the OTHER SIDE of my face ! My dentist wondered if I should go to emergency after he worked on me and I was swelling even MORE. UUUUUUUHHH. 😩 I've lived with tinnitus for 5 years next month, since the end of September, 2019. I certainly will be asking questions and having my husband do the same. THANK Y🦷U, Dr. Michelle !!! 🩵
Years ago I read about the connection between root canals and cancer. I refused to have one when suggested. The tooth was not save able anyway, so it got pulled. That actually happened to my back teeth, lower jaw. One side had a bridge, which was recently removed. The tooth with the crown had a cavity and caused excruciating pain. I'm getting at least one implant per side, so I can chew again..
My gf had a root canal that became infected, the tooth cracked, and the remaining infected roots had to be pulled. Worse yet the sepsis appears to have caused damage to the pulmonary valve of her heart.
I saw a dentist a little over a year ago whom I'd never seen before. He told me that I needed crowns (2) in an area where I was having no pain or discomfort. I had teeth with large fillings that were okay. I was reluctant but eventually went along with it. A week after the crowns were put in, I got a bad infection, and when that was cleared up with antibiotics, I got another bad infection 2 weeks later. He then told me I needed a root canal. Before I got the root canal, a fistula developed. The root canal procedure, which lasted over three visits, cleared things up except for an area above one tooth up near the bone, close to my cheekbone that is to this day sensitive to the touch/tender. The dentist who did the root canal did a 3D scan and told me she couldn't see anything else that she needed to remove. She said the tenderness would clear up in time (which it hasn't) and said that if it didn't, I could get an implant. At this point, I got upset and said I simply can not afford $5000 for an implant and won't do it. I'm very unhappy about this. Any thoughts?
I had similar experience. I went to a new dentist for a checkup, and she told me everything is fine but I need to replace two fillings with crowns. I said I would think about that. When I left the office I thought it would be to clean around the crown and food stuck under the crown causing cavity and infection. Btw I had those fillings for years and nothing happened to them. So I just found a new dentist.
That's horrible, I am so sorry. Hope that you will find a good solution. Don't trust immediately, that's what I've learned. Go somewhere else, and somewhere else even a fourth time to hear other opinions. We need to be our own advocate. Trust is earned they say, so why do we trust dentists so blindly?
I got a giant silver amalgam filling instead of a crown, and so far it's lasted 20 years. The great thing about amalgam is it's self-healing and auto-fills with time, due to the oxide taking up more space than the original material.
Wishing you a lot of strengths. This is not right what happened to you and unfortunately it happens way too often. Speaking out is the only way to make these issues known. You may consider seeing a therapist to help you through this.
I've had 3 root canals and all failed. Ended up with double infections on both sides of my mouth during covid. I ended up getting 5 molors pulled and a bridge or partial plate...(not sure of proper terminology). The dentist glued the partial plate to the 2 teeth they made stumps. During application of that partial, they were really having trouble getting it on and the technicians hand slipped, hitting and breaking the perfectly good tooth in front of it. Then they blamed me saying my teeth are soft. I was furious. They filled the broken tooth and said they would repair any problems that may arise from their mistakes. Today that tooth is now problematic. It hurts when I eat or drink hot or cold beverages. I hate to go back to them, but I can't afford to pay for more dental work from a different dentist. I've been suffering because of them. I sure wish you were in my area so I could become your dental patient. Unfortunately, I don't know of a dentist around my city that would offer what you do. Thanks for this informative video. I will suggest this when I go see this dentist that broke my tooth. We'll see what happens.... Sending positive vibes and blessings from northern Indiana USA
I wish I had find you many yers ago. I had two root canals done 6 years ago and since then I have severe migraines, joint pain and stomach issues. Doctors can't find the cause of it. My dentist says everything is fine. I suffer so much, every day is a struggle. I am starting to think my root canals are the cause after all. I don't know what to do. Should I just pull them out and make implants?
I’ve had a root canal tooth for years that I swear is a problem, anyway, I’m going to get a bridge. My dad had two top teeth and a molar on both sides, front right top and left side top molar on a gold bridge (I think they called it) I’m not ever going to get an implant. The idea freaks me out. 😮😮
I also had severe migraines that would land me in the hospital for fluids. The second time I was given an iv bag of magnesium, I decided to do some research. Unfortunately we need to be our own advocate. After supplementing with magnesium (and nothing else), the migraines stopped, I finally was sleeping thru the night and the heart palpitations have also stopped. ( I was even sent to a cardiologist and put on heart meds which I have stopped taking). Not trying to be a doctor here. This worked for me.
I had a similar experience after “silverpoints” were placed in two lower molars. Both knees became so swollen I had to have them drained and injected with steroids. The silverpoints had to be “dug out”. After that, no more knee swelling.
This type of dentistry poses a risk for a greater future infection to the area, they often try to sell themselves as the solution and while only taking into account your dental health and not take into account your overall health which poses a risk for reoccurring infection in some people. The thing about holistic dentists as that they use minimal treatment and what I mean is that it's a very light type of work that's easy on the body which is great for overall health but that's assuming the patient will never put any amount stress in that area again. Example they don't use titanium implants they'll typically use zirconia implants or stem cell treatment and the issue with these methods is that they're weak and so bite force or involuntary clenching or accidents will likely upset the area and cause more damage, that's one example. I think holistic dentistry is great for older generations that require less invasive treatment. All treatments carry a risk and before you make your decision on traditional or holistic treatment, make sure you look at your overall health and weigh which is one is better for you.
Hi, I am 63 and have had minimal dental work until this year. Had to pull a molar and now I am scheduled for a root canal on #31. I am so confused as to how to proceed. The thing that burns me is I was told like 12 years ago that #31 needed a root canal. I refused, they filled it & it lasted till now. They only sent me to a specialist because the tooth was too sensitive to put the crown on. The dentist was not able to numb it enough to work on it. It was fine when they removed the filling and decay. The specialist says I will probably be back in a week with pain if I skip the RC. Any advice?
@YutaBLv Considering I was going on two hours of sleep from the night before when I took a break from a project when I ran across this post and asked very simple questions. I need some work on my teeth and was interested. Anyone with respect and simple common decency could have answered. From your flippant, arrogant, remark... apparently that does not apply to you.
I had a friend who had root canals and unbeknownst to him, one of them was infected. And his doctor couldn’t figure it out why he was getting weaker, or did the right treatment in time, nobody knew about ozone back then… antibiotics were not getting in through the jaw and the infection went to his brain. He spent months in hospital, turning into a vegetable and finally died. He was 48 years old and a wonderful person. Left behind a wife and two boys.
Yes, this should never happen. I am sorry for your loss. I think somehow, it's time for dentistry to change and to expand and it starts with awareness, education right on our plates, choices and behavior so that tooth decay won't even happen. Lots of jobs are dying out and being replaced with new ones. Why not so with dentistry? Just braining storming out loud. Wouldn't it be nice if all of us had that knowledge and a chance to keep our own teeth nice and healthy from a young age? Not many parents take interest unfortunately but perhaps schools can step up. And involve the parents, too.
Cost the same as what? There are many variables involved and the cost are higher for a tooth replaced by an implant and crown. Then a root canal and crown. Often this type of dentistry isn’t covered by insurance, especially inlays and implants. Lots to consider.
This is great education on what not to do. It is never explained in detail like that to make an informed decision. Thank you. I did get your toothpaste powder. ♥
You know you really needed a root canal when you consider it the best thing ever. 12 years ago, as soon as the hole was drilled and the pus came flowing out, I felt better than I had in years.
Watch the video again. You may have missed the part where she says it should just be removed. Removal is inevitable once you get a root canal. The issue is on the way to that inevitable removal, the root canal will likely infect the gum and bone, negatively affecting your over all health. I am living that now and have been for about 5 years.
@@iddicted Before beginning anything regarding the cancer that my husband had he was sent to check all he could need in terms of solving problems in the mouth because doctors do not want to to having any risk of infection in the body during the treatment process. He was recommended a root canal and three of his doctors said to not make any root canal because the risk of infection with potential *serious complications was too big. The detail is that those Alopathic doctors were also naturopathic doctors. There is a difference in terms of seeing things from another perspective. More than that was left behind before he began any cancer treatment.
@@NAH14386 if you are getting regular dental exams that would easily show up during their examination. Content like this goes around every decade and it scares many people from getting dental procedures they need, can afford, are covered by their insurance, etc. I’ve had my dead tooth almost 20 years and there’s no indication it’s falling out. I just think OP could make a disclaimer that any dental procedure is better than none for those who can’t access this type of care rather than use fear as a marketing tactic and that every person responds differently to different treatments.
I've worked chairside with an honest dentist for 30 years. I spend so much time trying to tell patients (the ones that even WANT to be told) a lot of this information. But, she is not telling you that you will have to live with the "hypersensitivity" or pain until your tooth heals from the damage. 9 out of 10 patients will choose root canal or even extraction in order to get out of pain instead of waiting days, weeks or sometimes months for the pain to subside (and that's even if infection is NOT there).
Great information. I learned something surprising when I lost two bicuspids, one on each side, on the lower jaw. I found out that I didn't miss those teeth at all, not one bit. Also they're not too obvious. At age 70 I am halfway through an implant procedure on one of them but I won't bother to do anything on the other side, just get a new retainer. Now, on the upper arch, it's a lot more important to fill any gaps because when I had a gap, it caused me to have a lisp.
Bravo to you Dr. Michelle for cheering the use of ozone - very few dentists dare to even consider using it. As another distinguished biomimetic and minimally invasive dentist (in Minnesota) laments, the dental profession can do wonders in the office, but it's at home where things breakdown. He says the biofilm and anaerobic bacteria (responsible for lowering the pH and producing the enamel dissolving acids) start to recolonize by the time the "patient gets back to the parking lot." What's needed, he says, is an oxidative treatment the patients can use in between dental visits. Thanks to dentists like you Dr. Michelle, you have inadvertently created the world's first ozone therapy for home use - a device which allows ozone gas to mix with other fluids (perhaps even your Remineralizing Mouthwash ??) to create a foamy oxidative anti-microbial mixture (FOAM) while the user breathes normally - while watching a video at home. No ozone gas enters the breathing passages. The FDA might finally support dentists like you, if the device proves to be as safe and effective as early tests show. If progressive dentists like you had never promoted the use of ozone in dentistry, such an invention would never have happened.
Of course bacteria start to grow back in minutes, because they divide extremely rapidly. You seem to be asserting that you must have a sterile field in your mouth which is nonsense. Most of your intra-oral bacteria are doing you a lot of good (such as preventing over-growth of opportunistic infections like Candida and also providing nitric oxide). Cleaning your teeth regularly is all you need to do to prevent them forming an anaerobic colony (something that takes weeks). This is basic periodontology and is well understood.
I had some tooth sensitivity. I used the special toothpaste for sensitive teeth that has potassium ions to temporarily seal the pores. I eventually thought I'd try nano particle hydroxyapatite toothpaste. There are 2 manufacturers, one Canadian and one Japanese (on Amazon). I was a material scientist and the mechanism seemed plausible. I tried it and within two weeks the sensitivity disappeared, never to return. I now have a nearly full tube of this toothpaste which I haven't used in 8 years.
Thanks for your timely video, I’ve unfortunately lost all my molars and my front tooth, they were all crowns that lasted 15yrs which I know is good, my front one had a veneer because I fell on it as a 9yr old and killed it. What I didn’t know was that I have a congenital problem with my stomach sphincter so I constantly get stomach acid in my mouth, I thought that was normal. So my front tooth just broke off. I could manage cosmetically with the missing molars, but the front one is awful and I hate wearing the denture. I’m looking at an implant but it’s cost prohibitive in my country. I’m a guy and the missing tooth makes me look rough, and I’m a big smiler type person and I hate doing it with my missing front tooth.
I agree with the previous dentist and can tell those who are watching these videos thinking the newest treatments must be the gest in dentistry. After 39 years in private dental practice Ozone treatment has been around for many years. I have known very few dentists who have tried it and continued to use it for many reasons. Root canal treatment is very successful if done properly and even ones that look they were done poorly survive. Not all teeth need crowns after a root canal and most crowns protect the tooth from fracturing . My best advice to anyone who sees a dentist for treatment make sure the dentist explains and shows you exactly why you need the treatment. Do yourself a favor and learn a little about the proposed treatment and ask questions.
Wish I’d seen this a year ago! I’m 73 and had my first ever root canal last year. My dentist did explain what you have here about how I won’t know if there is infection because of the dead nerves and so I have to be super vigilant about keeping my teeth clean. He also chose not to cap it because, for some reason, I don’t chew on that side of my mouth so he felt it wasn’t necessary. Your theory makes good sense to me and I’ve just subscribed.
@@GregariousAntithesis actually it's not -- it's considered part of the brain and the brain is very sensitive to infection and inflammation. Very quickly eats the jawbone and the number of infections and autoimmune disease is real deal. Sadly, the right care like this is unaffordable.....but payment plans are worth it vs what the doctors will never ever connect re: your problems that seem unrelated and are very much related. I got rid of my lupus with biological dentistry
@@Jennifer-gr7hnwhile I think that it is great that you have manages your Lupus? biological dentistry in no shape, form, or fashion cured you…..bc lupus has no known cure.
I had a back molar with a large filling/cavity that my dentist told me when I was 18 that i "might" need a root canal. Every dentist for the next few years gave me the same warning of an impending root canal. About 10 years later, a doctor recommended a crown and I did get it. Since then the molar became sensitive and i felt mild pain with cold foods. About 10 years later i started to have severe pain and discovered it was infected under the crown and the dentist almost missed it! She said root canal or remove the tooth.I had it removed and am so glad. It's at the back and feels funny-the space thats there-when I eat but spared my😮self root canal.
thank you for sharing your experience! did your bite change at all, or teeth shift? my holistic dentist recommends i remove the root canaled tooth and do an implant, but i'm concerned it may fail (as it happened to my mom and great aunt). i found an online dental lab that creates an Invisalign-type fitting with a tooth that fills the empty spot so that it acts like a retainer. the root canal tooth doesn't give me issues (i had it redone 3 years ago in Reston, VA, and that dentist says there is nothing wrong, no inflammation), but i can see the color of the original tooth looks dark. i may do a dental thermography session to see if there is any inflammation.
Thank you for bringing this information. I live in Portugal and have found a great dentist. I have broken both the top and bottom molars. My Dentist successfully performed overlays. I am so happy to have saved my teeth!
I believe all my crowns were not needed. The dentist said, he sees some cracks and a tooth could fall out. That scared me. Then, they all wanted to remove old fillings. I only agreed to a few. I have an old filing, over 40 years old. STILL THERE. STILL A WORKING TOOTH. They wanted to make that, a crown too. I put it off. I am now 80. I did not know. CROWNS WEAR OUT TOO!
Yes they do. Everything the sealants the crowns and the root canals are all impermanent. And nobody tells you. I've had dental implants and had to have a bone graft which was recently causing me issues. It didn't look right. I went to get it checked by the oral maxillo facial surgeon and he was aghast that I had come to him to have it checked. I wasn't after new implants. You would think that if you pay for them to be done that it would be normal to have check ups on the work by the professional. Especially if you are having issues. It seems not. Don't get me wrong I got referred to have a cone beam scan? and then referred to a prosthodontist and an ent check as well. Which is all good. Except for a feeling that I got that he had the idea that I was there under a false pretense wasting his valuable time. Which I definitely was not. Well I might have been from his point of view. On the other hand he was a consummate professional and sent me to the right people. Apparently the bone graft that holds the implants is ok but it had been giving me problems with small uclers that I showed my gp and seemingly a small hole or indent in the gum tissue that I can see looking at it. But the scan said it's ok from the inside. I'm scared to brush the gum there. And left the surgeons office dazed and confused and a little anxious. He has a super fast brain that leaves my mind spinning. I can't read those cone beam images for the life of me. I've had so much work done they are scary to look at.
Recently graduated Dentist - This video does accurately explain the issues of root canals and crowns really well . The problem is what she states as the magic solution :implants and onlays - these are offered in dental clinics everywhere. You cant just put a buzzword like biomimetic dentistry on it and claim it like you just discovered it. Secondly I agree with other Dentists here re: claiming an implant is a better solution to an rct. She is scaring you into suggesting something really bad can happen with a root canal in the future which will make you really sick. The statistics for this must be very very low - it is a rare event she is purposefully not making clear to you so you go for the more expensive implant. Implants do have a great place in dentistry - once you are sure the tooth needs to be removed - not before. In terms of onlays just think of them as half crowns - less tooth removed so less chance of sensitivity. But yes they can have issues with bonding at times. Overall first half of the video summing up problems with current dental treatments is good - the second half of the video not so good
In the UK we all know that bad teeth impact your health really badly , the constant inflammation for a start is a negative pressure on your immune system and we also know of the links between bad teeth and cardiac problems. So, gaslight away, and have your little tantrum at this lady, who is only stating facts and just remember that the Internet reaches further than the US and other countries aren't as backward in their health awareness.
nothing its too late now as they removed the root killing the tooth totally if it wasnt already dead in the first place. We can get the dead root canal tooth removed and a dental implant or pray that the new tooth growing technology works well and is out within the next 10 years as i think its still in early trial stages but it seems promising.
Try a “hygenic” diet: carnivore/keto diet- no sugars, no carbs, good spices such as turmeric and good hygiene with natural toothpaste and mouthwash with hydrogen peroxide or coconut oil
@@barbaraosimani6285i eat a clean diet but no meat or fish now... I do veggies, seeds, sweet potatoes, no processed anything, no sugar except for fruits and sweet potatoes .. lots of greens...
I've had some root canals for over 50 years and nothing bad has ever happened to me. I am thankful for them b/c the teeth were abscessed. It was either a root canal or an extraction. I'd MUCH prefer the canal.
How about patients actually looking after their own teeth and taking responsibility for reducing plaque and acid attacking on their dentition. No one suddenly needs a root canal ( except after trauma) and no one suddenly needs a crown ( again trauma) … if you look after your dentition and your children’s teeth … none of these interventions will be necessary. If root canal treatment is done well.. you don’t get generalized body infection.. fact. Preserving enamel.. great idea .. no one was born with too much enamel Request your teeth are chopped to bits for “ cosmetic “ reasons… idiocy bordering on cretinism… a dentist agreeing to chop your teeth to bits… almost borders on physical assault. All reparative dentistry will fail… that what I told my patients back in the day… it’s just 1. Can that failure be repaired. 2. Can the failure be many decades in the future. Don’t fear dental intervention , but equally , stop eating all damn day long and drinking acid fueled drinks and get rid of plaque every day. Stop admiring horrendously white lumps of porcelain on idiots teeth… get a life.😀 Mike BDS
Watch out when somebody is trying to sell you something, and smiles constantly, all the way through the video. And the soothing music is to increase your trust in the presenter.
Regulation and ethics. The FDA prohibits the medical use of ozone "in any medical condition for which there is no proof of safety and effectiveness", stating that "ozone is a toxic gas with no known useful medical application in specific, adjunctive, or preventive therapy.
To late for me! All my dentists have had the traditional view and so I've followed what they've said. I have crowns, implants, and a bridge, and fillings. Now I'm to the point of still needing 2 extractions where crowns used to be for implants as replacements. My wife has had the safe hard time with her teeth and we've most of our budget on dental repairs this year.
I scrambled through my dental records to find that my last two dental procedures were, indeed.... porcelain onlays. YAY ! This is why I travel 2 hours R/T to this particular dentist in Yadkinville, NC. Many others travel far further to this dentist.
I developed an abscess under a root canal that went undiagnosed for nearly a year. When an abscess in a neighbouring tooth failed to respond to anti-biotics, I asked the Dentist to take it out and the one with the root canal...I wasn't consciously aware that it was causing the problem! Upon removing it the Dentist said 'Ive just been reading about these. The bacteria in this is more toxic than Arsenic. Your body has been trying to wall it off'. I lost two teeth and went on to develop an autoimmune condition!
What condition did you develope? I’m going through this now just waiting to have the old root canal molar removed. My infection encapsulated itself next to the crack in the root. I feel ok other than lots of anxiety. I have a few more root canals I’m having replaced by implants. Don’t care about cost, just getting them out over the next year. I just had my gum flapped due to pain and swelling to have them scrape out the infection on the gum and bone. I could literally feel my periodontist scaling it. Can’t wait to get it pulled.
@@cgkuch4184 I'm not surprised you're feeling anxious! I certainly am never having a root canal again either. The condition I developed was ME or Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. @@francesrobertson4377 Very scary stuff!! I have a few RC’s. Mine will be coming out over the next year or two. Sucks because 2 of them are older RC’ and crowned. They aren’t causing issues so far. Who knows. I keep myself pretty healthy. Glad you’re feeling better!

Thank you! I have been LIED to so MUCH by the dental industry that I don't know what to do. I have an implant supported permanent lower denture that hurts my left back implant when I chew on my right side!! But does not hurt either side when I chew on my left side. Of course they say nothing is wrong! To protect the prosthedontist he set me up with, my oral surgeon told me the implant had failed and needed to be replaced. BUT a visit back 4 months later for a teeth cleaning, he had forgot that he lied to me and told me how great that implant was doing, even comparing it to old xrays saying it was the same!!!!! I reminded him he said it had failed and I called him out on it and now I am not allowed to go back to get my teeth cleaned because I don't trust him!!!???And I really loved the way my teeth were cleaned. So depressed.
Thank you Dr Michelle, I totally agree with you. Today the dental awareness is at the bottom. Sugary drinks and cakes are worse. I make Alum water and do gargling in the morning and in the evening. I find that all plague and tar has vanished. The tooth pain has gone. Dr Michelle, can guide us if Alum is good for Dental care 🙏😌🙏
