Not pictured: when they half-realize that, given that she takes half damage, that 66 potion is functionally like having 132 more HP. That fight was ridiculously difficult, especially given that they removed a huge chunk of her capabilities very early on.
I'm about 99 percent sure that Otohan's second stage had a built in time limit, and if they had managed to survive another couple of turns, it probably would've kicked in and then likely hit her with exhaustion. I think BH still had a chance to win without Sam's endgame play, but they might have lost more in that case, so what Sam did was not in vain.
They definitely would have lost more than one person given how many attacks Otohan could do in a single turn and how low on HP most of the party was. And since they had no more Revivify, they could have easily lost half the party for good. This was not very far from a TPK.
@@blaze4111 saw another comment that matt confirmed it was 20d4+20. If he did normal 10d4+20 it was bang on average (as is expected with that many dice)
Okay I am far from a Matt dickrider (I disagree with some choices too but he is trying something very ambitious), but ya'll who disagree with his DM'ing need to chill the hell out and examine your parasocial relations. Be annoyed. You are entitled to be annoyed as a viewer and are entitled to your opinion. But some of you are either ranting about it for too long or sending whole thesis statements on 'Why Mercer is a Bad DM and He Sucks'. Very few of y'all with these takes are conceding the good parts of the episode or series, the tension, the storytelling, or and here me out on this: the fact this may have been a planned event with the party for a reset/drama. Sometimes players need/want a change of pace and need a nuke to do it, but I am not going to be like some people here and assume I know what is going through the cast's heads (some of ya'll have even been suggesting the party hate Matt or whatever which is wild) If you really hate this fight so passionately then why seek out this clip? Why keep watching? If hate for a moment or two in a series is giving you more passion than what someone with love for the series would have, then stop and reassess why you are engaging in the first place. With that in mind I am not gonna engage with replies to this beyond shorter sentences if anything, cause there is no point in me trying to change your minds or yours mine.
The thing I hate about all this is that all of these toxic people who insist on being offended for someone else when they, not only, aren't qualified, but also don't have the right is the fact that they are projecting their opinions and how they would run a game on Critical Role. This isn't their game. This is Critical Role's game. You can be annoyed. You can even hate it with a burning passion. You are entitled to that much. But if they say that this was their decision (and it was because Matt cleared it with everyone this was going be a brutal Campaign and that he wasn't going to fuck around) then you need to shut up and accept it. Some people!
@lockskelington314 probably. Campaign 2 went for like 140 sessions, idk if this one will go as long but they've still got other things to deal with before ludinus like the weavemind and maybe even all minds burn. Who knows they might have to fight predathos too
I'll say it here because I didn't want to say it on the episode itself but, Otohan was so fucking broken. I understand Matt has to create a viable threat for 7 high level players but even just her health pool was bullshit. That plus the backpack, the 2nd phase half-of-all damage, the supremely OP modifiers and extra weapon damage, her mobility with and without the pack and the fact she was basically a caster with a lot of her extra abilities made her borderline unbeatable. It was a great episode and definitely their best fight since Vecna but I still think she should have had a few nerfs. Yes BH won but at too high a cost for a single human combatant. The Malenia of Critical Role
I mean they had to be strong for a 1v7 because action economy. And realisticaly DND Health pools suck. 1d8+5 to 7( from dex bonus)+ 2,3 (from magic weapon)+ 2 (modified dueling rule) 1d10 (prone bonus damage) going at highest of 30 average of 21. Which isn't that high all things considered. A level 4 fighter can do up to 17 with a dex build or 27 with a strength build an attack. They where 7 level 13. There are quite a few spells that can limit an enemies attacks down. Otohan only has 3 legendary resistance to burn. With a party of 4 casters and 2.5 martials. That doesn't take long. 66 healing even with resistance is one turn of combat and it's gone again. Yes action surge made them deal massive damage, but they only got 2. Be lucky they can only single target and not hit everyone for 30 on top of that.
I don't necessarily agree that the cost was too high. Otohan was one of the main bad guys of the campaign, of course she was gonna be ridiculously tough. And BH also went into this whole plan without really coming up with a solid exit strategy, so Otohan caught up to them before they could prepare for fighting her in any way. Losing a PC is rough but I think it makes sense that this whole mission on Ruidus would come with some heavy cost. Plus, I think they were very lucky to not have a TPK the first time they fought Otohan, so they've already escaped very bad situations with relatively few big consequences, since Laudna was able to be brought back anyway.
