The moment you’ve all been waiting for has finally arrived. Devon and Daniel finally share the cult story. This episode we’re talking about cults, identity, and friendship. Daniel reveals why Devon’s cult moment felt like a betrayal and how it led to their two year friendship fallout. He also talks about how figuring out your identity in your early adult life, and why he approaches life differently than his past self. The whole crew also unwraps amazing gifts from one of our fans and share their thoughts cults beyond Devon’s “leadership camp” *wink wink*.
How did study abroad change Daniel’s perspective on life? How did Devon and Daniel mend their friendship?? And how did Devon find himself in a cult to begin with???

You can tell he was uncomfortable and a bit embarassed talking about it again with Dan. You can tell with how much he kept trying to find the little good he got out of the experience. If Devon benefited in any extent, then atleast he got something out of it. Pressuring a friend into doing something is never okay though. Whether it’s trying a new drug or joining a cult.

Like if you agree Dev should’ve offered a more direct & genuine apology for hurting his friend, instead of offering his perspective on how it could’ve helped Daniel out. Still, best episode to date🙌🏽

Yeah I’m glad they’re cool but just watching Daniel in this episode…he is still hurt (at least that’s what it seems like to me). And Dev’s apology seemed more like “I’m sorry, but” instead of, as you’ve mentioned, a more direct & genuine apology.

I felt the same but I am sure he apologized in private hence why they are in this place that they can freely talk about it and why Daniel would even have him back in his life. Not everything has to be public. More meaningful if he did it in private between them. But I do agree he should have apologized again instead explaining over and over why he did it or how it could have helped. But I'm sure they talked it out before the pod was even a thing.

I mean...half of people's friends and families are in religions (which in many cases are cult like) and they try to convince the ones they love to convert because they think it will be helpful. Most of these people have good intentions and usually mean well because it is helping them, so they are hoping it will help you. At the end of the day, though, he clearly apologized for it and they are friends that were able to move past their differences in beliefs.

You'd be surprised how many people fall into the trap. People who are looking for something in their life. They find a group that relates to you and makes you believe you are valid and bam it is a cult and they got you and brainwash you. Those people know how to manipulate you and that's why so many cults last for years. They purposely know who to find and what buttons to press to get you to do what they want in the end. So I don't blame Devon because he was going through stuff and didn't see any warnings. He just saw a workshop that helped him and it wasnt until he got deeper that things were getting weird and not until he was out and then everything is clear to him. Just glad it didn't go any further than it did

Let me just say- Daniel just dropped a PhD level course on being a black american in the modern world. "Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one's lifetime." Take into consideration that as human beings, black americans also grow up with pre concieved notions of oneself, our culture, and how others view us. I went through the EXACT same experience as Daniel in my 20's. Third generation Army veteran... but I can't trust in he pledge or my white battle brothers because of how I viewed their view of me. Ended up in the psychward myself in the midst of the George Floyd protests. Mentally killing myself for the fault of an unjust system. I chose to live, and learn what that truely means, for my sake. I traveled to Argentina during the pandemic just to try something different. Then Uruguay, then Canada. I fell in love. I fell in love to be viewed outside the hyper violent lense that was american racism. I'd take the standard label of foreigner any day. I've travelled throughout South America, and Europe- its my drug of life. Meeting those engaged with human curiousity beats stressing myself over the opinions of the maliciously ignorant. Some people just dont like you. Thats NOT on you. I found the breathe to be my trueself once I travelled outside of America. When I came back- I kept it, and actively fight for it everyday. But its a space for my sake that I deeply cherish. I see that Daniel as also developed that sense of space and chooses to write his story how he deems. Just want to say I fucking love this podcast. You guys are real genuine people openly expressing real genuine thoughts. To feel like I'd reach a level of being seen to this extent- jesus. Ya'll are amazing- seriously. All the love.

Daniel, Devon, and Lindsay's willingness to have these type of sincere conversations with each other... along with the silliness. And thanks for sharing your story. 🙏🏾 Your comment is helpful to read as a Black man about to take my first venture to South America and Mexico. I'd always found travel intimidating and have only been out of the US once in my 30+ years of existence.

Lmao, you can’t be serious. You must have been in Argentina for half a day. They dislike black people. Try going to Italy and Eastern European countries. And see how they fare vs USA. People always complaining about USA have no idea how great this country is. Stop being a big baby.

That's a side of the spectrum I as an outsider don't get to see and for me it unveils a lot of different perspectives. They say that traveling helps you to find yourself and even though sometimes it's difficult to do it I think is an oportunity we need to have. Putting our cultural aspects into question helps us define ourselves. I am from Uruguay, and I'm glad your experience in my land, along our neighboring nations, helped you through.

Yes. It was honestly breath taking hearing Daniel’s perspective. I almost unmade myself in my early 20s trying to reshape the box that the modern world had put me into and it took so much self actualization and bravery to finally conclude that only I can control my personal narrative. It’s crazy how a show we all used to watch as children is coming back in adulthood and doing the same things it set out to do and that’s help navigate this crazy thing called life. These 3 are so genuine and honestly the best product of Nickelodeon. It’s great to have them back

I think he’s just trying to explain his perspective at the time, and how it was one of his deep rooted beliefs during that timeframe. To me, it does seem like he’s genuinely sorry. Or that he feels bad after hearing what Daniel had to say on how he felt. I understand what you’re saying though-just my take on Devon’s side in this conversation. & I really think Daniel highlighted a lot of important and insightful aspects. This episode was a little tough to watch at certain points, and I appreciated that. Dan had a lot of thoughts about this I feel like he never got out. I appreciated Daniel's full cynicism towards the situation (as I would and do feel), but Devin's understanding that it was hurtful. Even Devin doing this silly thing at one point still speaks to his openness and his positive personality. Good stuff.

Really interesting Daniel’s trip to Europe. It reminded me of listening to James Baldwin talk about leaving America to live in Europe. He roughly said that in America he could not exist as anything other than a black man and that the deep racial divisions at the core of America made it impossible for him to be himself. It was in Europe that he could be a black man, and a writer, an artist, a critc, and a gay man. Granted that was a long time ago and the world has rapidly changed since then. But it’s interesting to consider the American element there and America’s relationship with race. Great episode, never comment but I was so fascinated. You all are just have such a natural and real rapport. Even during the commercials, it’s always apparent you guys love to work together and I’m just lucky to be able to watch it happen. This show was incredible! Very refined humor for a children's standard, covering many fun and iconic themes (the scene with the little monkey getting angry hahahahah). It feels like it was just yesterday that I was a kid watching a marathon of "Ned's Declassified" on Nickelodeon. Seriously, such comforting nostalgia! Hi big fan from neds to the podcast. This episode hit hard, I can relate to both Devon and Daniel. I’m a ex member of a Los Angeles mega church was involved since I was a child til I was in my early 20s. When I left I was going through a similar time like Daniel’s, where I questioned the church, the people, it hurt me the most when a child hood friend of mine, tried to get me to sign up for a business pyramid scam. For a minute I couldn’t trust people. I would skateboard by myself a lot, little but surely, every thing answered its own question, then I started finding people and reconnecting with the best attention, now I have friends and family that except for me and I’ve been out the church now for a little over 10 years now. devin should really look into the teachings in the Mormon church if he is interested in cults or cult-like stuff.

Just catching up on the podcasts and want to say that Daniel's point at around 43 minutes in, where he discusses his journey and how the definitions that others place on you can define how you see the world. So poignant. I could probably listen to a whole video on Daniel's thoughts on the subject, it was very well articulated. Glad your friendship survived! Lindsey's tip: "If it's true love/friendship, it'll come back." Also a really good thing to internalise. The best friendships and relationships won't degrade over time, they allow you to change and grow together.

Thanks for clarifying! I'm not a fan of misunderstanding, def believe in the truth and Devon and Daniel bumping heads cause of bad timing Is a prime example of why. Ppl can learn much ✊️ Thanks again! I'm glad y'all rekindled. The power of Ned's! Lol ✌️

This was an amazing episode. I love hearing this from Daniel. I do wonder why we’re uncomfortable saying “I’m a descendent of slaves. ___is my struggle and racism exists” I believe whole heartedly that we shouldn’t allow that to define us. And - not hesitate when speaking on it, because it make anyone else uncomfortable.

Idk I have mixed feelings. 1. You went to Scientology the biggest colt to try to get into, as well as another brother hood cult like program 2. He was probably seeing you mentally struggling and thought this could help you, because it was helping him. It seems like your head space was off and I don’t think he needed that bad of a cold shoulder.

I find myself admiring Daniel even more with each episode, such an amazing human being. Devon I also loved how you owned up to your past mistake for hurting your bro like that, I know I can relate. I effed up as well when I was about your age in my early 20s and lost a really good friend of mine, although it wasn't related to cult lol. Still, the takeaway and tips from this episode was lovely.

Next to the absurd amounts of money you usually have to spend in these cults, I think the worst part is that they basically let people ruin all their relationships by trying to convince their friends and family to join these groups as well... which conveniently makes people stay in these cults even more, because now they have no one else left in their life after they made every one lose their trust. I'm so happy you guys finally reconnected because it would've been such a shame to lose you guys' friendship over this.

Hearing about the memories you guys had together (even the bad) was so entertaining to hear! 😁I have to say I've been on both sides in my early twenties. Almost joined a cult-ish org AND had a friend try to sell me on something. That's willlddd!
