He's a little bit mad but it's ok. That's why he is unique. (He received psychiatric treatment in '94; this old interview reveals Daniel's hidden sides, but without condemning him.) Read this old interview, google it: (copy and paste in google) November 24,l996 THE MAIL on Sunday/LONDON THE DECEIT OF DANIEL DAY-LEWIS ONE WEEK AFTER THE STAR'S SECRET MARRIAGE, A SPURNED LOVER BREAKS HER SILENCE.
Daniel Day-Lewis has only done 11 feature-length films as a lead actor in his entire career, and has been nominated in the Best Actor category for 6 of them, with 3 wins. This man is truly incredible.
He started in television and I've seen as many of his shows as are available. He's wonderful in: 1. How Many Miles To Babylon? 2. My Brother, Jonathan 3. The Insurance Man and others. He truly is the best of every generation as he's different in every role.
I agree with you, He's the best actor of our generation and I doubt there will be another with his passion for the art itself and no hunger for fame and money.
People say "he's the greatest actor of his generation"... absolute rubbish, he is literally the greatest actor of all time, in any generation. He is the GOAT of acting.
Not true . Look up Brando in the men . Brando has things even ddl doesn’t have . Much more understated and naturalistic . His work in the 50’s was ground breaking and is common place with actors now . His performance of Don Corleone is up there with any performance of Day Lewis
Interestingly this is very accurate of Daniel. Have bumped into him and his lovely wife here in Wicklow many times prior to covid. Had coffee in his house with them. Absolute gent, so down to earth. Hopefully he is getting on with life in retirement 🙂
@@yosoykarito don't think he would see it that was. Very ordinary man with extraordinary talent. From my interactions if you're normal and talking about weather and life and local things he is very engaging. If you go full on fan swoon he will run 😂 noone bothers him here. Eats local goes to local small shops lives a rather simple life. His wife is lovely a real New Yorker 😂 not met them in few years now
@@jamesodonoghue4541 I'm a fan of him and I don't think I could ever meet him but still I like to know what does he likes to be treated. Somehow I got the feeling he was actually that way because his gestures and his whole aura talks about a simple man. And Rebecca seems to be nice and cheerful. In the remote case I ever meet them, I will remember the tip of not talking to them as a fan 😅✨ Thank you once again for sharing! (and sorry for my bad English).
So lucky you!is he funny person to be around with or so reserved as everyone says?to me seems very sweet man! thanks for giving this info ,would be nice to really get to know more about this great actor!
Shortly after Daniel won his first Oscar for My left foot, I was at my mother's house when she asked me if I remembered him. I wondered what she was talking about, and she told me how when I was a small child, the Day - Lewis family had rented a flat from my grandparents in Sussex, right next door to their own house. They had the flat for a year or so, and Daniel and I were about the same age, so we played together regularly. In all honesty, I don't remember him at all, but it was a long time ago.
It's telling that a famous actor wanting to be left alone in his private life is considered "strange". Introversion and privacy are not signs of strangeness.
I'd like to add that the incident when Day-Lewis apparently saw his real life father's ghost was when he was playing Hamlet, which makes it especially ironic/fitting with Hamlet's father's ghost playing a key role in the play
No, he said he had an incident that involved his father ( such as feeling his presence)but he later denied it and said he doesn’t remember ever seeing his father. I’ve read and heard that he saw his father but later denied it and that he had an incident but later denied it. Who really knows
@@markunknown6507 Interesting- thanks for adding this! I guess when a story like the Hamlet ghost one comes out about the same guy who married Arthur Miller's daughter only a year after playing John Proctor in The Crucible, it sounds true enough :)
He took acting to places no-one had been before. For me, There Will Be Blood was beyond powerful and confronting - it was psychologically something of immense complexity that we'd never seen before. Definitely he's in a class of his own - I've never seen better acting. Mesmerising and genius level.
Completely false ...y'all don't seem to know much about acting...there was very little special going on in there will be blood...literally insanely overrated
@@davedogge2280 truly turned the art of acting on it's head with his seminal piece "Freddy got fingered". Never before have I given a standing ovation in a cinema, and I fear never will I again. God bless you, Tom Green.
He doesn't read scripts in retirement, so even if a great script gets written, even if it gets delivered to his house, he wouldn't read it. So this won't happen.
@@nigelsmith3719 i dunno, would he even take the call? He's a very private individual, quite reclusive even, i believe he's always been notoriously hard to get in touch with. Even when he was active, he didn't do many projects, one film every few years.
@@nigelsmith3719 So do people just die after they retire? Lol he was never really that active anyway, his most active period was during the 1980s, he made like 8 films in 8 years or something, after that he did one movie every 2 years or longer sometimes, from 2002 till 2017 he only did 7 films. He does other stuff, i believe he's an avid carpenter, he likes to make stuff from wood. He has enough money to never work again and I'm sure he has plenty of stuff to do without acting.
That’s what actors should be like. Because here’s the thing, despite him being so well known, I never see DDL in anything. I always see his characters, because I don’t know what he’s actually like. So even if I see his face in different projects, it’s always someone else, not DDL playing someone else.
The first time I saw The Last of the Mohicans where he played Hawkeye I was transformed back to that era and place. He was that character…right down to learning how to survive in the woods and how to use the weapons…plus seeing him in a loincloth wasn’t too bad, either!
Don't know if that is my favorite of his films, because there are so many great ones to choose from, but I've also watched it many times. Very underrated.
The man is like an epic, rare, elusive legend. I really believed somehow that he WAS Nathaniel. He does his job and goes home at the end of the day for the same reason we go to the theatre. To loose ourselves in another life, story and time. Then we go back home. If the performance is great, there is no need for an actor to do more.
The only actor who has done a handful of films, won 3 Oscars and quit while other actors who are more famous than him made dozens of films and won 1 or 2 Oscars max. If he sneezes, he'll win an Oscar. Not to mention the time gap he used to leave between projects just to add to his "Strange" strategy. He's still very underrated to me. "I drink your milkshake"
I have loved DD Lewis since "My Beautiful Laundrette" 1985. He is a phenomenal actor. I thought for sure he would play Lestat after I read "Interview with a Vampire". Lestat's physical description is DD Lewis. I will love him forever!😍❤
If I'm not mistaken, Daniel Day-Lewis refused an invitation to join the cast of "Interview with a Vampire". But Daniel can play anyone so he would be amazing in the role of Lestat
I've always respected him for the fact that he was about the craft and the craft alone. No bullshit, best actor ever, hands down. No one has ever had such versatility and range.
I'm sad that he won't act again but he deserves his retirement just like Jack Nicholson and Joe Pesci. He has nothing more to prove to anybody for his talent so he just does stuff that brings him joy which is be closer to his family and i fully respect him. He left a legacy that will live on forever
He is such a great actor, that I hope that he'll find a role to tempt him. A wonderful human being too. He and his wife go to visit his brother-in-law. Who is in a home for people that need help.
Loved his performance as the main character in the movie "My Left Foot". Great performance by a wonderful actor! Also, loved the book that the movie is based on.👍❤️
He has a particular "commitment to the craft." He researches the role and circumstances; then takes that info and breathes life into it, he develops his character in a way that's unique. His process is what makes him such a brilliant actor. Him being reclusive demonstrates that the "Hollywood lifestyle" is not for him.
I don't understand why this is considered strange. Acting is a profession like any other, but people seem to think that because its show business, actors aren't entitled to a private life.
He is a consummate actor. I don’t think he is strange. I think he shuns the limelight, which is admirable in light of the typical film star image. I hope he does more roles. I love The Age of Innocence, one of my favorite films.
@@ccc4102 Greetings and all the best from southeastern New England, USA, where it's 1:34 a.m. Edit: He's not only a great actor, often called the greatest in the English-speaking world, but he also seems to be an exemplary human being. Thank you.
When one is so committed and brilliant at what they do, it tends to call them day and night. He will never leave the art of acting, he has no choice, it is in him, always waiting for the perfect role.
He's my favorite comedian, so many differents faces, accent and so more. I'm french and around me nobody knows him, incredible... I loved Last of Mohican, To much violence but wonderfull moovie. Others but I only know title in french... Thanks to have shared this. Temperence
Daniel for sure has made a bold proposal to the noble cinema art, pulled it off brilliantly and then some, and he carved a new direction in the art of cinema history. A genius in my humble opinion.
Clearly the most outstanding actor of all time. Performances on another level. In Gangs of New York - he was the film! Should have also clearly won the Oscar too. Importantly other actors and directors have the same opinion. Hopefully he will give us a few more performances.
I went to drama school in London to become an actor. The methodologies we get taught signify the monumental dedication Daniel Day-Lewis applied to his craft with every role which takes a lot of time, effort and concentration. He is what I would call “a master of his craft” in the world of acting
He could come back in disguise and using a different name to fool everyone and it wouldn't surprise me. I had the same piano teacher he did when young and she told me he was able to learn faster than anyone else she had taught.
I think we are so used to having access that we forget they're people too. He might still be eccentric if he was a mechanic or worked in an office. He can just afford to be an isolated eccentric.
"There Will Be Blood". One of the best movies I have ever seen. I had never heard of it, or him. Came upon it by chance, flipping channels. Its the only movie I've seen with him in it. I've seen it 3 times now. Edit: I lied. I did see "Last of the Mohicans". Didn't know it was him.
My top 10 greatest living actors: 1. Daniel Day Lewis 2. Gary Oldman 3. Denzel Washington 4. Leonardo DiCaprio 5. Christoph Waltz 6. Christian Bale 7. Morgan Freeman 8. Jack Nicolson 9. Robert DeNiro 10. Al Pacino
I don't find Marlon Brando that great, though. I find Daniel Day-Lewis and Gary Oldman as brilliant actors. They can transform themselves just like Meryl Streep. They are not afraid to look the part as well.
When other actors imitate what you do, you are definitely great. Look at Warren Beatty and James Dean's early work. They were imitating him as did others.
Daniel Day-Lewis comes from a very distinguish Family closer to the Queen of United Kingdom. Also I believe he was already born with that natural talent. The result = 3 Oscars as a Leading Role Actor, which is so hard to achieve. So yeah! He is a Genius!!!
You can tell by just one look that this gentleman is nothing short of a genius. And I don't think strange is the right adjective. Rather self-directed, individualistic, creative and assertive. Which is indeed rare in this day and age, but not strange.
He didn't sleep for three nights before being interrogated by real cops in jail (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-z3YaUiV5LcE.html) I admire him so much. Daniel Day-Lewis made me believe in acting talent again, after watching so many rubbish movies, I finally met this awesome, genius actor and I still get amazed every time I watch his performances. Also, if you do't know him, he's very quiet, charming and soft spoken, oh the way he speaks is almost poetic, he has a good education for sure.
@@rajeevtiwary1696 ☺ You just made me dream. Sadly I didn't meant that; I only have met him on movies and all the interviews and articles I've found of him. He's truly a genius and has no big ego.
Cool that he lives anonymously with his family, in a modest home on an otherwise expansive lot. Seems fitting. About all I wished to find out about him, other than what's on film & behind-the-scenes.
THANK YOU! You missed his important ground-breaking first role as a gay punk in the film, My Beautiful Laundrette! Why? Again, Daniel was totally believable ...
DDL is one of the best actors of our time. Staying as far away from HW is how he keeps some semblance of normalcy & sanity! Permanent retirement? Never! Imo.
I dont think hes considered one of the best actors of his generation i think hes actually the greatest actor of alltime easily the gold standard when it comes to versatility and depth with each and every character he plays being different than his other characters
