+meslayerdeth At the Gates & Dissection will always be my two favorites! Gates of Ishtar is another that's close.. I'm not a fan of **most** modern melodic death metal, but the old school melodeath bands are my favorites!
Praotec svedskeho death a hlalvne old school death metalu ktery se napsal knihu Swedish Death Metal Daniel Ekeroth mam ji takyvpalnu mesta jako Goteborg i Stockholm kdese prkticky srodil Old School Death😈😈😈🤘🤘🤘👍👍👍 Tre-Kronor Old School Death Metal!!! 👑👑👑
Notice how Daniel Exeroth doesn't say that he hates metalcore, or that he thinks Gothenburg is now boring. He just says that no one has trumped the originators. See, you can be a fan of old school death metal and not hate metalcore! Whether good or bad, the fact that it's widely popular with the metal mainstream does not automatically mean it sucks, unless you subscribe to the 'underground only' mentality. Be aware that I'm not saying I like it or loathe it, just that I don't care.
Reading the excellent book now. What is the best follow up to Entombed's LHP? Bought that when it came out and would now like to explore other luminaries of this scene. Is there anything that comes close to LHP?
It doesn't matter what you say, man. "Left Hand Path" crushes all opposition. But on the other hand, I would say that "Like An Everflowing Stream" is almost as good. Note to everyone: this is my personal opinion.
eBay usually isn't that risky, but if you're really worried you can check out guitar shops in your area that sell used gear. If you're in the northeast, you'll probably be able to get one at Daddy's Junky Music, which is where I got mine. If not, pretty much any big-name used guitar outlet will probably have one. I don't know so much about the smaller name outlets, though.
To be more accurate At the gates album , "Slaughter of the Soul", spawned the core sound through failed imitation's. The red in the sky and any of their other works were much too complex to be a derivative of core.
@DeathMetal6907 That's your opinion, I'd really say they were interchangeably black/death metal. If you ask me they helped bridge the rather large gap between black and death metal.
@SIGN666 entombeds guitarist recorded two guitars on the LHP album and i think that they used the hm pedal for the fat crunchy death metal riffs and the ds pedal for the death metal melodys stuff and the solos. and i also think that it may not sound that good because entombed used to tune their guitars even lower (they had b tuning) on that album. and also entombed recorded their songs with downtuned basses of course so if you combine bass and guitar you should get the real superfat sound !!!!!
It's true what he says, even tho there are Melodic Death Metal bands that come up with some amazing stuff. Nothing truly beats At The Gates and Dissection, they might be as good, but never better, imo.
@DeathMetal6907 IMO the Somberlain has early gothenburg melodic death with black metal influences check out son of morning -live in koln 1997 sounds like some at the gates riffs, but for me SOTLB is melodic black with some thrash parts in Nights blood ,Retribution. Last work -Reinkaos is gothenburg melodic death with black metal-occult lyrics
@MartyrOfMetal Yeah, you're right and that's why I think At The Gates is an excellent band. In Flames WAS a great band too for its heavy metal part, but that's a bit too far from the "real" swedish death metal. Anyway, I've checked the first album from Miasmal (a band from Gothenburg, playing 100% old-school swedish death metal) and it is excellent ! Probably the best "new old-school" swedish death metal release I've heard so far.
@Icantfeeeeeelit Don't get me wrong, I'm a huge fan of TJR/Whoracle/Colony and I think that's probably the best albums melodic death metal have to offer... BUT, I don't see melodic death metal as "real" swedish death metal. Just have growling vocals isn't sufficient. When I say "swedish death metal" I mean "Dismember, Entombed, Nihilist, Unleashed, Grave, Nirvana 2002, Interment etc", otherwise I say "melodic death metal".
Got mine from Ebay for about 55 USD. That was some years ago before the new rising of swedish death metal, so maybe they are more expensive and sought after now. I think they stopped being manufactured in the first half of 90's so second hand is the place to go.
@idangle6 I hate metalcore, and I don't think DT, At The Gates and In Flames never has that intention when they created that great sound. So weird that there is NO band that actually makes 90's-styled gothenburg metal. Does anybody have any tips? If not, I might wanna go and make it myself.
Colin Richardson bought a 5150..used it on a shit load of albums eg Carcass Heartwork. Then At The Gates used it to and then the Goteborg sound was created.
You never know before you receive it and plug it in =) If the seller has good feedback and one pays with paypal at least I wouldn't be worried about getting ripped off.
Depends what kind of Metalcore. The good ones are those that are a genuine fusion of hardcore punk and metal. Then there's the garbage we get nowadays that's basically some sort of pop-metal bullshit with the shitty brown note breakdowns. The good bands are really rare, but I otherwise agree with you 100 percent lol
it's funny that people always assume that melodeath bands ripped of at the gates. that's like saying dismember or grave ripped off nihilist/entombed, just becasue their debut albums (not demos) were released one year later than LHP.
Well yeah absolutely. To my understanding metalcore was born out of melodeath in combination with other things obviously. Dude i totally listen to metalcore bands (ATR being one lol) but i feel like unfortunately there are a lot of very generic and shitty bands which have sadly become posterboys for the genre. Many of which have pretty bland songwriting skills. But yea i like both, i was just making a funny lol
@soulofshiver Metalcore tries to play Melodic Death Metal but they FAIL they can't make their own styles so they fake At the Gates and stuff.. I HATE METALCORE
