Daniel Johnston drew almost every day. It helped him with his battles with mental illness. In this short video, Margory Johnston, Daniel's sister, explains in more detail, the importance of being creative.
Thank you.. I got a picture of Jeremiah the Frog tattoo'd on my arm.. Daniel saved my life one day. His song "careless soul" rang throughout my head and wouldn't shut off.. it was a turning point in my life.. Your brother was a beautiful soul and still shines brightly to this day..
In college I would occasionally walk by Daniel's mural of Jeremiah the Frog with his friendly "Hi How Are You" greeting and came to find out about his music that way. Thanks for sharing this message. Daniel's art also helped a lot more people beyond himself.
Daniel's music and art has been an inspiration to me since the '80's. His home recordings inspired me to start making my own music. I thought if Daniel could do it why can't I. So in the mid '80's I got a keyboard, mic and a 4 track tape deck. Now I'm in my 60's & having fun going through those decades old recordings and combining them with my drawings into videos, uploading them to my RU-vid channel. I draw every day, it helps me express the need to create I've always had, and helps keep me level. Thank you ♥for caring for Daniel!! 👽🐇 🦆🦸
Ms. Margory, you represent what a caring, loving, understanding, care-giving sibling is all about! 🤗 What you advise is truth. Thank you for sharing your kindness. Mr. Daniel continues to inspire, past mortality.
Thank you so much Marjorie...i discovered Daniel only two years before he left us for his journey to the great unknown. But his music and story will stick with me always. Thanks for shining his light to a difficult world sometimes and reminding us of Daniel❤
Thanks for this positive message, I would absolutely agree, for me it's with writing it's been huge in helping me process things in my life. Also big shout out and props to you and all other carers out there
I don't know what i was expecting, but this is so sweet and wholesome that i cried a bit. Daniel's music has helped me feel understood since I was 14 and even more so after my psychotic episodes. It helps to know I'm not alone and it could have been worse. Even if it was worse, I would have had something to show for it. Art really is a window to the soul. Do everything you can to keep that window open to at least yourself and don't let anything snuff out your light. Taking things slowly really helps, I've found, especially when it's hard to be in the moment because it hurts and you're scared and alone. Take some deep breaths, do what you can, and you'll be surprised how things turn out around the corner.
I’m always telling people to draw and paint. As an artist it is a form of self discovery, but even for people who think they are not artist and think they can’t draw… I relate a lot to Daniel…especially when i look back on my younger days but even still today.
And this the last video so far on the official channel.. BUT Thank You and Thank you SO MUCH..... From France. This legacy is so important. There is many people who will be influenced by Daniel in the future. I hope we can have more testimonies like these in the future.
His songs Only Missing You and Pow help me every day. There aren't many artists that make you think, wow they're literally embodying themselves in their music, their souls in this music. He eloquently and BEAUTIFULLY help us see the pain for what it is and work though it.
Bless you, Margory Johnston ❤️ I spend many hours on my sewing machine & never tire of it. I love craft & gardening & making beautiful things to share. Your advice is excellent. Daniel was lucky to have such a kind, caring sister 💕
I really needed this today.. thank you so much. Your brother Daniel change my life and helped me through some of the hardest years of my life. This is a great video, and my condolences, never forget you aren't alone in this big world.
Thanks Marjorie. Very important message. I'm a big documentary fan and "The Devil and Daniel Johnston" may be my favorite of them all. If you haven't seen it, go watch it.
you are absolutely right, not much gives me as much comfort and joy as art does for me, I think if we were all encouraged to engage with our artistic side more we would all be better off. It doesn’t fix everything, but it can help put things at peace even just for a little bit.
You are so right. Being able to exercise creativity is such an important thing, and too many of us, as adults in this capitalist hell society, don't give ourselves time to do it.
