I agree, when I need to "go somewhere else" and get something done, nothing quite like Apollo for getting me there. You can listen to it and not listen to it and it's equally valid... plus, it's beautiful.
An Ending: Ascent and Deep Blue Day. Two of the best songs ever. Love the ambient pedal steel of Deep Blue. First time I ever heard ambient country. It works! Other Daniel Lanois pedal albums go beyond, but Deep Blue was the first and loveliest.
I spoke to Daniel a few years back about Budd / Eno's " The Pearl " which remains quite possibly my favourite album of all time. The way he spoke to me was an artist full of love and pure excitement for the music and wanting to continue to share the music with other artists and music lovers. There aren't many artists like that in the business, but I can tell you that when you meet one, it will never leave you.
Just listening to On Land and Apollo now - they share the same floaty spacey - err - atmospheres and yet they're coming from two distinctly different inspirations. On the one hand, the land and sounds from specific places and then on the other, space, free of the Earth's gravity and a place which is far far above the land ! Two brilliant albums, very similar in some ways. Play 'em over and over again. Thanks to all concerned - super interview.
Good interview, hey the guy has got notes, so what, he's prepared and professional and doesn't want to rely on memory when sitting before his subject this is admirable not a reason to criticize him he's taking this like he should he's taking it seriously. The questions are good the flow is good he is listening to the answers and responsive and present and he's making eye contact. This is a good interview I'd like to see a better one for those who've been critical of this.
I am not big on picking desert island discs. Too intimidating of a question to answer but if I had to choose just one it would be Apollo. Lanois and the Eno brothers created something truly special. Just like the Apollo missions, it presents the possibilities of what mankind can accomplish. Beautiful film that it was written for as well.
Dan has an attraction about him that can only be appreciated by anyone who has been fortunate enough to notice how special he is in his grounded direct way. That yields knowledge as to his contribution to music and to the spirit of self. He is an iteratively evolving artist, who has 'experience' as a teacher, and holds onto this while allowing what has its will musically to become now. I think one of his "trademarks", across time, is his calm perspective to trust that it always works out.
Deep Blue Day into An Ending (Ascent) into Weightless and Always Returning, Then time to meditate and goto bed. Been part of my sleep hygeine regiment for years now, perfect ambient/electronic/slide/Eno-produced album.
Whenever someone says 'Rolling Stones says' I instantly take anything after that with a pound of salt ! Not withstanding,..Lanois is a great producer/musician !
Idiots... some people have really missed the point and context of this interview. It is stated right at the very end its part of a *series* of interviews primarily for radio produced at the time by CBC celebrating Daniel Lanois being inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of fame. Visual presentation isnt primary and the concept using (or not hiding!) note cards isnt so abhorrent. Even as an Aussie I have a fondness for CBC Radio, not only for its Commonwealth cousin status of the ABC, but for the many hours it kept me company during my first snow bound winter in Calgary during my own rite of passage backpacking year in the 1990s.
Oh, my god. I've justed linked all the Eno and Lanois albums i've heard, with the songs of Red Dead Redemption 2. How did i not realise it was the same name?
Rich Terfry is a good interviewer, however I wish he would have shown more interest in the music of Lanois and less in Eno. He IS talking to Lanois after all.
WTF!!! The guy interviewing has to baltently read of a card!! Couldnt they get someone who acctually knew what they were doing. Give me a job, I can read too.
