Blessed to have had Daniel as an influence in my musical journey. In 1978 Daniel engineered the very first studio session I ever worked on. I was 18. Grant Avenue Studio, in Hamilton ontario, was like mecca to me. I remember one evening we stopped by Grant' late at night, Daniel was all by himself. It was like 3 am. He was recording the different sounds a copper fire extinguisher made when it was hit with varying objets. No Lie... He was tapping on a fire extinguisher and recording the sound it made... Daniel was a fantastic musician but he spent a lot of time developing his engineering and production skills. Yes, I'm blessed because, at an early age, I was exposed to his genius. Old school recording techniques coupled with a true love of music and sound reproduction is what make DL the Einstein of modern music!

Had the privilege of recording an album at Grant Avenue with Danny engineering and Stan Rogers producing. His philosophy and abilities of finding the soul in a particular place, at a particular time with a certain group of people was happening way back then. He was a wizard at finding sounds and cutting windows in 2" tape!

That was the most educational, uplifting, energising video I've seen this year. I'm a recording artist, and I think the combination of Pharrell's questioning and knowledge of production with Daniel's immeasurable genius (I'd never heard of Daniel before) and knowledge of sound and artistic communication is just magical. How much I would love to have been in that room and talked with them, and played them some music. I want to get rich/famous/acknowledged enough to do that. I really do.

"You make sounds, and I go looking for them". Pharrell's honesty takes understanding his art a notch higher. The amalgam and synthesis of known or recognized sounds is creativity, even though much has been said against Hip Hop music studio excess.

Heard the mention The Meters, never heard of them, looked them up because they both loved them. Once the song started I was digging it, downloaded it right away before getting 15 seconds into the first track. Fantastic discovery.

Fantastic interview..I loved that Pharrell was really taking in what Daniel Lanois was saying. Daniel is a truly spectacular, caring artist and I'm so glad the interview extended to 45 minutes...most of which was dialogue from Daniel. On another note, as a female watching this, I was truly stunned by the naked asian server. For an instant I thought...oh, now I'm seeing an example of how this male dominated music industry blatantly alienates, objectiifies and subjugates women. Did the producer actually think that only men would be watching this amazing interview and that this stunt was somehow funny?? A juvenile decision that disjointedly appeared...absolutely not in keeping with the intelligence and inspiration of the discussion.

Yes i'm no prude at all, nudity is wonderful , i'm a male, but time and place... I would never ask a woman to do something like that. Ruined the vibe for me. I realize it was 9 years ago but why ? what's the point? it's degrading. Sad because it was a great interview.

Pharrell Williams reactions seem at times to come from a stranger to music, at times uninterested, at times umprepared for the interview, at times hinging on hostile and cold to his guest. Notice some clinical wow's here and there, but nearly no follow-up questions to one of the most creative geniouses of the 80's and 90's music. Strangely, Mr. Williams closes his opening presentation not by going into Mr. Lanois's music but by mentiong "his incredible Los Angeles home." For what Mr. Lanois says and the stories he tells, of his how his music is created and his being a prolific producer for so many artists-from Brian Eno to Emmylou Harris via Lesbian bands in Canada-it is worth watching it.

its obvious that the naked women is a symbol for how pharrell and danny were talking about live vs recorded music. and that live hits you differently and sometimes harder than recorded, for it being spontaneous.

With Daniel's raindrop pattern on his steel guitar, I visualize a white/cream-ish colored overcast sky in the direction of West. Then at 33:46, I visualize the yellow of the sun--as the sun peers through the clouds after the rain. The direction of 33:46 is South. The time of day is morning--between 8 and 11 am. Btw, I am a synesthete, and that has definitely stimulated my synesthetic thought. Very cool!

That lovely creature who walked in is adult actress Layla Rose. Stunning! And I live and grew up in Hamilton where Daniel cut his teeth recoding and went to high school right next to that studio where you see those early pictures of himself and Eno in front on the porch/stoop.. That was Grant Avenue Studio that Daniel and his brother Bob built in that old house. Though he hasn't owned it for over 20 years, it's still an amazing studio, still going strong.

What a fantastic master class! Daniel has some fascinating insights. And he is so generous about sharing them. That conversation about the sound of rooms... McCartney said he and Lennon would practise their new guitar songs in the bathroom of his Dads house, because they liked the sound it gave . Loved listening to this. An actual conversation where people listen and react to the other person thoughtfully and honestly! An exchange of ideas.A meeting of the minds. Yes!

The part where the naked woman came in at 30:00 was hilarious: Pharrell acting cool and not looking, while Daniel was dumbfounded but tried to respect her, Pharrell throwing in lines about "Bottom end! bottom end is important on some level right?" "Things should be rare and spontaneous" "Ooooh what was that? Let me see that again!" Daniel got his jokes and was laughing along hahahaha That comedic moment aside, this was an educational and most of all very inspiring talk. Lots of positive energy and respect for each other, and stimulating questions. That piece at the end was so good it made me want to make some music inspired by it!!! Does anyone know if there's a completed track somewhere? Reminded me of Sigur Ros Thank you very much!

Pharrell was a little off in his history of U2 and Danny. He got so excited talking about U2 that he didn't catch that the album that was recorded at Slane Castle was The Unforgettable Fire and he started saying that The Joshua Tree was the album recorded there. Danny graciously corrected him without making Pharrell look like an ass!

Though Windhill Lane is not Slane Castle. Its both Ireland. For most americans thats just 'very far away'. I do love to see Lanois grace and modesty.
