Agreed on this. Stupid rule that ruined both Daniel's and Oscar's race. So gutted about Daniel. He had such a great pace. 3rd fastest in Sectors 1 and 2 during the race and 6th fastest in Sector 3. Had to stay the whole race behind Yuki. And in the last laps he tried running a bit in clean air and his engineer informed him about his Lap time being just a hundredth behind Max's lap. Wonder were he would have finished if not for this.
Restart order should’ve been the order at the start of the safety car and it should’ve gone red almost immediately as it was immediately obvious the tire barrier would need to be repaired . Should’ve been allowed to unlap, no advantage was gained. Again like stated, if 6 cars would’ve had this happen they would never start them all a lap down. It was obvious from the start
They absolutely would start with 6 cars a lap down, even 15. The teams should have let both cars run behind the safety car, then pit when the track went red, that way they'd have been on the lead lap.
@@milkshakemuncher they were. the track went red before they crossed the line a second time meaning RIC and PIA were still on the lead lap when the red flag waved. you can't complete a lap under a red flag. they counted the second formation lap as a lap, which they didn't let RIC or PIA do because they had to start from pit lane. they forced them to be a lap down.
@@justinmiller5660 This is incorrect. They were a lap down because they did repairs in the garage, instead of pit lane. See Article 58.11 in the Sporting Regulations. This denied then the opportunity to unlap themselves as would have normally been provided by Article 58.4.
Agreed. They should just do a count back to the moment the incident happens and if yellow flag is activated and it subsequently goes to red - it's a de facto a red flag and just do a count back.
@@alias19 I disagree, article 58.11 describes 4 things: a) how the standing start message should be conveyed, which has nothing to do with the discussion here; b) how any car eligible to take the standing start can overtake the safety car; c) why cars in the garage at the time the race is suspended (or red flagged) shouldn't be taking up the grid slot, but should start from the pit lane, which is why both of them started from the pit lane; d) why the formation lap(s) should be counted as race lap. For me, the second point outlined any car eligible to take the standing start, and my understanding is, both Aussie drivers are eligible to take the standing start, except they are starting from the pit lane. Unless mentioned elsewhere, it didn't specify any cars eligible to take the standing car has to be "from the grid", and cars taking the standing start from the pit lane should also be considered eligible to overtake the safety car during this formation lap.
In the race DR set the third fastest time and Yuki set the 5th iirc so they had some good pace between em. I dont know who decided that lap down thing but its was dumb af.
I think it would have worked out Ricciardo a few seconds down on Tsunoda without the lap down thing but I imagine DR would have had less use of the drs than Tsunoda. @@thunderbug8640
Considering that a whole lap wasn't completed before the race was Red Flagged, then I think the Restart should have been started from scratch, with all cars on the same lap. This is not the first time there has been a major shunt at the start of a race, which required a Red Flag and a subsequent restart. This is one rule that needs to be changed, so that after a Red Flag Restart, all drivers get a fair chance to race for points and not be penalised for something which was not their fault, as in Danny Rics case. He was the innocent victim of the shunt that damaged his rear wing, so was unfairly penalised. The FIA need to look at the Restart Rules, to eliminate this injustice.
I’m not gonna lie, I was getting so mad bc I thought it was a tv glitch and I was like, HES MADE SO MANY PLACES…. Then it hit me that he was truly a lap down. I was so confused but it was whatever at that point
Ok, let's think that way. I'm leading the race with 30 sec advantage. When they red flagged and restart the race, the 2nd car gets 30 sec advantage right? Why don't the rules let backmarkers to unlap themselves like the other drivers gaining advantage of it? I like the red flags because of the amusements of standing start and close driving like the start of the race. There is no point for not letting them to unlap theirselves.
Just imagine the firestorm and hail of brimstone from Marko and Horner if Max was effected the same way. Oh man, there would be protests from Moscow to Mecca if that happened. The rules structure of this sport are so broken into the nethers of oblivion.
They came in at the end of lap 1 to retire the cars. Everyone else was behind the safety car and done another lap before red flag, so therefore had done 1 lap more than Ricciardo and Piastri. If the teams let Ricciardo and Piastri stay behind the safety car with everyone else, then pitted when red, they would have restarted in pit lane on the lead lap.
@@milkshakemuncherohhhh thx for that i was actually surprised they were still in the race seeing the damage they sustained. it makes sense now that they "didn't" and had to retire, but with the red flag were able to repair the car and rejoin the race. one lap down seems fair to me then.
Sky Sports reported they were put a lap down for passing the safety car before going into the pits for the start. If accurate, then it was their fault for doing so.
While I do agree with daniric that it was unfair but then again, the team should either push dani and piastri to follow the SC until it's red flagged because with that much debris in the track it was definitely a red flag.
If the car is unsafe or needs to be inspected /repaired then this is a stupid idea. Punishing teams for doing the right thing and not having bits of a wing fall off the car and make another accident.
The race director has the discretion to let them unlap but after Massi used that regulation in Abu Dhabi 2021 I doubt it will ever be used in that way again..Now remind us DRic..What were your comments about that ?
Should the team know that waiting for the red flag and doing the work in the pit lane would not penalize the car? Yes, that's why it is not only who is driving the fastest car but who is the smarter team that wins.
I would understand if they were the culprits of the incident and the red flag. But at this time they were collateral damage, teams had to write off parts from the budget and on top of that loose all chances of scoring points. Seems fair
He needs to get away from Ferrari badly. If I was Charles I would start talking with Lawrence Stroll now. I would live to see Charles in the Number one seat with Lewis Hamilton in the Number two seat in that team for the 2026 season.
@@joshtheking1772 That's a decent idea. But, I don't think Stroll is getting rid of Fernando for Charles. No way. I wouldn't after all the mistakes he made in 2022-2023. Fernando is constant. Also we can't tell if Aston is gonna be mediocre from now on or if they will improve to the top like at the beginning of the season. From Charles' point of view it could be a gamble he's unwilling to take because Ferrari at least provides a minimum of performance.
Ok, look. Heres the problems. First, there should never be ANYONE starting a lap down, EVER. Unless there is something so egregious that it effects the entirety of the grid, the rules should never cause this to happen. Second, rules from the FIA and F1 are in conflict. Its almost as if the FIA and F1 are trying to control the sport and trying to one up each other. Third, the rules structure needs to be enforced equally for everyone. Random checks doesn't enforce the rules for everyone at the same time. You will see 15 or 16 cars bottoming out throughout the entire race or during qually but they only check four cars for violations. What are they looking at? Who makes the most sparks? Thats dumb. Last, but not least, for the love of the almighty stop making new rules suggested by teams. The Red Bull Era is the worst this sport has ever seen. Red Bull are a great team but they have negatively effected the structure of the rules for the past 3 years and it seams to get worse every year. As long as they stay quiet, do people really think the sport is equal for all competitors? Not by a long shot from the look of it. The only ones actually paying the price are the drivers. Every single team out there, with the exception of McLaren and Williams are letting their front offices run the sport, and its hurting the image and prestige of what elite motorsports are supposed to be.
i still think alphatauri should have let ricciardo past tsunoda. he clearly had much more pace and i do think he could've potentially fought hulkenberg
I don't understand what Ricc is complaining about. The cars were boxed before the safety car came out, didn't gamble the red flag, and were about to retire. The red flag saved them by allowing them to repair. Is he saying they should have been placed at the back of the grid rather than back of the grid + 1 lap down? (I don't remember the positions at the restart).
Agreed. Laps under the SC always count. That's just the rule. The argument is that it ensures even fuel expenditures. Unfortunately, it also allows for BS like Belgium 2021, but that's not the question today. Why it wasn't immediately red flagged is the bigger question. It was quickly obvious that the race was going to be stopped. Why invoke the SC at all?
In 2023 London ePrix the FIA mandated that cars that missed a lap to do a lap under SC (So the Red Flag changed to a SC lap only for the lapped cars and then then Red Flagged again) to get everyone on the same lap - As you say rules are rules.
Those are not mutually exclusive statements. Rules are rules. All that means is you must obey them. It doesn't mean they are fair. You can have completely batshit insane unfair rules and that still wouldn't violate the "rules are rules" saying. These particular rules are not just unfair, but absolutely moronic. What even is the point of starting a race with someone a lap down? Is it fun? Is it proper racing? It's a joke...
Is almost like Formula 1 has become the next the NFL version of international friendlies football and Major League Soccer mix with WWE all because they doing this for entertainment purposes similar to that of NASCAR they want entertainment and drama rather than legitimacy and sportsmanship and competition between friends and rival.
I can understand driver frustration, but it was not unfair, the rules were administered. The teams should have kept them out running behind the safety car, this way, the cars could be repaired during red flag and both drivers could start in the pit lane but on the lead lap and have a chance of getting points.
funny how DR had no problems with that rule before but now that it happened to him hes crying about it? if it had happened to AT closest contender for championship possition and they were a lap down will he still complaint about it?
