@@Carmen-118 I was thinking something along with lane meaning a part of the road. So Prime or lane, there are hardships just the same? But can not say that I have heard something about roads that have to do with prime (as something better than a lane)

I've always heard it as "prime or lean, there's a hardship just the same." As in, rich or poor. This makes sense with the rest of this beautiful song.
