Thank you! That was very helpful because I couldn't decide which yellow, red and blue to buy! I think you're the only artist that has made a chart of all the watercolor sticks!

The thing I don't understand about the sticks is how they basically claim they are just dried tube paint. But if they were, they would be the consistency of the paint that dries in our pans, and they are not. You cannot draw with dried tube paint! So there must be some other ingredients. Of course with the Primatek controversy, we know that DS does not disclose all the ingredients they put in things. And we have always known their marketing is over the top!
@AllanJayQuesada
@AllanJayQuesada 3 года назад
I agree. I think they put lesser gumarabic in the stick to giveway for another material for it to be able to feel like water soluble oil pastels. There are watersoluble pastels, that are like the DS sticks. Though I was not very much pleased with DS's response to the Primatek issue, I still love the paints. Been using them for quite some time, and they're the most comfortable to use for me, so far.. besides their 'over the top' marketing, I'm still good.
@lindyashford7744
@lindyashford7744 Год назад
Maybe they add a little glycerine to help retain moisture? If they add that anyway to their other paints all they would do is adjust amount slightly, no need to disclose this ingredient at all. Most brands add this or honey or some other such…..
@jennw6809
@jennw6809 Год назад
@@lindyashford7744 I add glycerine to my dried pans all the time, but that doesn't make them into something I can draw with! Try it out. Also, DS doesn't seem to add anything to help their pans rewet or dry well. I wish they would! Even a PR122 dried down parted like the red sea...
@lindyashford7744
@lindyashford7744 Год назад
@@jennw6809 maybe they reduced the binder then ? You have used pastels?7 same ingredients? Binder & pigment? Juggle around with proportions and there will be a sweet spot where the ingredients do something different. Traditional watercolour has pigment, binder, a wetting agent of some kind etc. I don’t think it’s more than that, it would leave some kind of residue. So the grind, which has been noted to be finer might also be a factor, making it a bit more colloidal perhaps. It is likely a bit more technical than a home grind. That could also be why there are fewer colours. Maybe not all pigments take to the process. Are you sure they add nothing for the rewet, or do they just use less than other brands. I mainly have primates which are a little different anyway. I do believe process to be important. Ha! Like cooking, same recipe everyone gets a different cake…
@jennw6809
@jennw6809 Год назад
@@lindyashford7744 You obviously have great faith in DS that I do not. Watercolor does not dry out into pastel textures that can be drawn with under normal conditions. I have no issue at all with them putting in other ingredients, I just have an issue with them claiming they don't.

I did it once and it cost me 15usd. It wasnt bad and i still saved around 50usd because i bought a set of paints and brushes. It can be more costly if you are getting small number of items and depending on location. Here in Philippines, art supplies can get really much more expensive, sadly. 😔

If I ever gonna splurge on Daniel Smith colours, it'll probably be on some of these ^^' I like the idea of sharing them with friends, the fact that one dan also use them as crayons and that - unlike with the tubes - it means creating less waste. Also because it's a nice item to steadily built a collection with. I'm in love with those genuine mineral/ gem tone colours, especially the sodalith genuine one 🥰, that's such a gorgeous dark blue! Did you know that Sodalith is considered something like the "artist stone" with some spiritual people? It's supposed to enhance creativity 😁

The greens are so good!! I have most of them in tube form but have been extremely curious About the sticks! My question is not just is it worth the money/investment but is it worth it if you already have the tubes? Have you used the Derwent Inktense sticks? If so, are they similar? I’ve never used any watercolor sticks and the inktense are the closest, which i love btw and recommend if ya haven’t!! Thanks! 🙏

I loved this video Allan!! You look wonderful by the way and I always enjoy your thoughts. Thank you for doing a comparison to the tubes, that's exactly the info I needed. The primateks that don't granulate the same I'm going to buy in the tube. I have the moon glow it's so beautiful but there's definetly a difference with the tube vs the stick in granulation ect. So I use it in a lage pan but I get it really wet and work it hard before using it. I always transfer my color to the palette before using this one for proper strength. I have 8 sticks so far and I was just looking and debating which colors to try...im definetly getting bism.yellow, cerulean chromium(I'm almost out of pb36), buff titanium white I've never tried... . I love love the burnt scarlet I was just looking at it on the website before watching. Take care from Canada my friend xoxo

Hi Angie! Again, thank you for the positive feedback. I've been wanting to review and try this sticks out eversince and now, it's finally here. 😅 I really find the moonglow and the serpentine to different in sticks and I also prefer the performance of the tubes for those 2colors.. there is certainly a reason why Daniel Smith did it that way. I am excited for the colors you've listed as those are also my favorites like the pb6. 🙂 Take care too, my friend.☺️

Fabulous idea regarding sharing, you could get so much more to play with for a tiny investment. Great for art students or anyone who is starting out and in sticker shock from the price tag of high end paint. Seems like these could also be great for travel, just chop off a slice and pop it in your palette.

Yes, we definitely need the containers also to help them not touch each other. During the monsoon days here in the Philippines, sometimes these containers aren't enough. I need to put them in airtight boxes with dehumidifiers in it to avoid molds. ☺️

Is this better than the tube? For a starting/experienced artist.😅 I would like to know you're preferred brands for superior pigments po? 'cause passion is investment so shedding 💰 is understandable.. Recommendation please!?! 😁😄
@AllanJayQuesada
@AllanJayQuesada 4 года назад
Naku, don't ask a hoarder! 😆 Hmm. Honestly, the DS tubes are generally better when it comes to overall performance. I feel that the paints from tube are more individually distinct as compared to the sticks where they're made to be of the same feel.. like in tubes, the colors that granulate, really granulate and those who don't, do not. In sticks, the granulating colors still granulate but not as much as those in tubes. Sticks have the same price regardless of color, and series and there must be a reason for it. As of now, I am yet to discover. Preferred brand of course for me is Daniel Smith. Sennelier, MGraham come close to 2nd and 3rd. But it doesn't always have to be the brand but the specific pigment you are getting.🎨😊

@AllanJayQuesada
@AllanJayQuesada 4 года назад
You already have a great basic color selection right there, Jericho. :) ALthough I love MoonGlow, the stick version seems to be a bit different from the tube. the dual tone is lost in the stick version, but still a beautiful violet. If i were to add 4 more in your collection, I would suggest some more primaries to balance your selection. Cerulean Blue Crhomium (for cool blue), Quinacridone Red (for cool red), hansa yellow light or nickel azo yellow (for cool yellow) and the Piemontite Genuine which is an expensive earth color in tubes. It's like a caput mortum or indian red, definitely good in mixing shadow colors when mixed with blues., or burnt umber if you want t safe. hehe

sabi ng DS similar lang ang pigments nila. pero im not sure in regards sa ibang ingredients. i got sodalite on the stick kase nadaan ako sa dot card na nakuha ko. the granulation, the way the pigment move, totally different. ibang iba. my sodalite in the stick looks like a blue paint mixed with lunar black the way it separates.

Greetings Allan! Really enjoying your videos, thank you! What 12 colors would you say would be a good palette for general painting landscapes, botanicals, animals....I’m going to start investing by my LORD I don’t want to go overboard like I did with some tubes. I am just looking for a good strong mixing set to accomplish most paintings!
@arvindshukla8040
@arvindshukla8040 4 года назад
If you like painting animals and landscapes then you might wanna try quin gold, it makes gorgeous greens, punchy oranges and adds a gold-ish glow to all its mixtures, it's also really pretty on its own! In liquid colour has a colour spotlight on it and it's very informative. And judging by the subjects you paint I'll suggest not holding yourself back on the reds, greens and earth tones! Hope you have a fun time making your palette! I'm also currently too deciding on my 12 color palette and I'm into portraiture and honestly choosing colours is much more stressful than it should be, isn't it? Anyway, have fun! :D

@AllanJayQuesada 4 года назад
Hi Ruth. Sorry for late reply. Thank you, too. I believe, a 12 colors set is considered a standard number.. so, we have a standard selection for that. But, you mentioned subjects that are quite different. Hahah. But, considering you haven't built your Palette, Here is my recommendation. I think, it's cool to have a cool and a ward of the primaries. So that's 6. Plus a natural green, a gray, and a range of earth colors. Considering it's Daniel Smith, here are your colors. 1. Hansa Yellow Light 2. Quin Gold 3. Pyrrol Scarlet 4. Quin Rose 5. French Ultramarine 6. Cerulean Blue Chromium 7. Sap Green 8. Payne's Gray 9. Raw Sienna 10. Burnt Sienna 11. Raw Umber 12. MoonGlow Yeah, if i had to build a 12-color palette frm DS, this would be it. 🎨 Enjoy.

How is the color flow, the runs and the blooms on wet-on-wet technique compared to DS tube paints?
@AllanJayQuesada
@AllanJayQuesada 3 года назад
there is a small difference, almost unnoticeable, but there is. flow is more evident from the tube paints. i guess, the sticks aren't really exactly the same formula as the tubes. these sticks wont stand this shape and flexibility if these were the same as the tubes. whenever possible, id still choose the tubes.

@@AllanJayQuesada Hey, that's exactly the answer I was looking for! I try to avoid DS due to their Primafakes (I'm sorry: I buy the tubes, and feel like I have "Genuine PG7" and outside of a few basics DS does well in the tubes, I'd like to choose more ethical companies). And this was a fabulous demonstration! But I'd had a temptation to get a few sticks to cut and share with friends I'm trying to lure into wc. The "whenever possible I'd still choose the tubes" is all I needed to hear! All the DS drama aside, though, I was interested in how a stick would fare with notoriously hard-to-rewet colors (for personal use). Cobalt violet, for instance.

I have 51 sticks from DS and I prefer working with 4 or 5 sticks in my hand and 1 wet brush !I find it kind of wastes product to draw with them and I believe you get a more consistent app of color when you wet the stick! You should try the American Journey set of watercolor sticks as they are very differently shaped and allows you to draw more accurately with less waste!

Yes, i really as don't think these sticks are made for drawing. I just tried drawing with it in alternate ways in my swatching.
