Daniels and producer Jonathan Wang discuss Everything Everywhere All at Once during our recent series ‘Verse Jumping with Daniels, moderated by FLC Programmer Tyler Wilson.
In their second feature-film collaboration, Daniels evoke everyone from Wong Kar Wai, Harmony Korine, and Stephen Chow and everything from video games, RU-vid algorithms, wire fu, Japanese anime, late 1990s Hollywood nihilism, and more. Golden Globe® Winner Michelle Yeoh delivers a career-defining performance as Evelyn Wang, a first-generation Chinese-American living above her laundromat business with her aging father (James Hong), her teenage daughter (Stephanie Hsu), and her kind but painfully naive husband (Golden Globe® Winner Kay Hwee Quan). Amid an IRS audit (spearheaded by a nearly unrecognizable Jamie Lee Curtis) that reveals the cracks of her family and livelihood, Evelyn plunges into a multiversal war of “’verse jumpers” that puts the fate of every universe in her hands. This hardly describes the gag-a-minute, gleefully maximalist feature, whose high-wire achievement here is precisely in balancing the unwieldy tone promised by its title with a cinematically legible sense of infinity, all while issuing a profoundly emotional warning to our overstimulated present.

A year ago I went to see EEAAO in the cinema. I had seen a bit of the trailer and figured it'd be a bit of silly fun, I was not expecting the film to absolutely floor me. I was fresh out of college and had dived headfirst into a marketing job that made me feel completely miserable. I was repressing my creative impulses, thinking that going into a salaried 9-5 job I was somehow being "responsible". I instantly felt a connection with the Daniels' exploration of life purpose and all the lives we could be living, cried about 5 times, and thought to myself "This is why I wanna make films!". I'm not quite there yet, but I've started pointing my career in the direction of becoming a filmmaker. I hope I get to thank these lovely men in person some day.

I’ve seen EEAO 3 times now. It feels like my life. Yes , I’m a woman , I’m an immigrant and my personality is very much like Wayman on the outside but Evelyn on the inside. In my life I’m still waiting on my creative chance just like Short Round.

(12:14) The building they mainly shot at was a Countrywide Home Loans facility in Simi Valley. I worked there for a couple years. Shout out to the Remittance Processing department.

The movie is great. But the behind the scenes, the making of the movie, the culmination of all the circumstances and events that created this movie is even more amazing!!!

love love love these guys 😍 so intelligent but very grounded. they make esoteric and philosophical subjects very relatable. and that's why a lot people are moved by the movie because that collective everything-bagel inside of us have been gnawing at our subconscious - this movie brought light to it, and to finding meaning in connection and our common humanity. it would be amazing if they get the Oscar's, but even if they didnt, this movie has already reached the "pantheon" status of cinema. thank you for the gift of EVERYTHING EVERYWHERE ALL AT ONCE 🧡

Oh my gosh. I don't mean to make this all about me because that's exactly the OPPOSITE of the point. But when I did a little cult hit that became a monster smash anime dub, Ghost Stories, I felt the same way. When millions of people discovered it, it wasn't mine anymore. So much so that it was almost like I'd never even done it. And I think that's one of the beautiful things about art--in any medium. You make it, it's tortuous, it's arduous, it's soul-stirring, it's fulfilling, etc, but after that, it doesn't belong to you anymore. It's a gift, whether you admit it or not, but what you create is beyond you. That's the God blessed part of it. It transcends you and it becomes something wonderful for someone else. Just my 2cents.

I love their direct honesty and "cut the BS & get to the point" attitude they begin with by addressing the terribly distracting issue of urination and universal bodily functions that can inevitably get in the way of your undivided attention and full cinematic experience. It's such an uncomfortable position when you're in the middle of a great story and you're unavoidably distracted mentally and physically, an internal cerebral argument on whether or not you are going to interrupt the moment to go find the nearest appropriate relief hole. But forced suppression of said issue, "holdin it," is terribly distracting, especially when you're unknowingly doing it on the subconscious level. Then you risk the additional headache. When will this unfortunate tyranny be addressed by theaters adding the option of catheters and external bladders attached to the seats? The Cinema Bedpan?

That problem's a real PISSER! But......remember when concert performances were several hours long? Of course not....that was the 18th century and long before that.

As I've gotten older, my ability to hold it has decreased, and when I saw the title screen for the third act (All at Once), I thought, this is my chance to run to the restroom, thinking that the third act would be the same length as the first two. Alas, after I finished peeing and walked out of the restroom, I saw a stream of people, including my daughter, walking out of the auditorium where the movie just ended.

Just saw this film, ugh! It is So violent, so terribly LOUD. I may be missing something, but to me, it’s a sad imitation of our violent, confused, chaotic life that we are living. I like the sprinkle of philosophical musings about what the chapters believe is most important, but ugh it was painful to watch, and I felt just a horrible commentary of our modern lives.😱
