Nadsl and Thiem have been doing this before him, so maybe that was also an inspiration. For sure slower balls and court surfaces also helped.

Makes sense because with his long limbs and technique he has s long backswing and also not great rackethead speed. I think serve & volley is the best recipe to counter his strategy, but on today's courts that's easier said than done...
