Former Pakistan cricketer Danish Kaneria has never been shy of calling out injustices both within the country's cricketing as well as political system. In this hard-hitting exclusive interview with Republic SportFit, Kaneria touches upon a number of topics in his usual no-frills style.
For one, Kaneria has advised the Indian cricket team against travelling to Pakistan for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, saying the security risk is too high due to Indo-Pak relations as well as how the country of Pakistan treats their minorities, particularly Hindus.
Kaneria, who is himself a Hindu and is in fact only the second Hindu to ever play for Pakistan, talked about people of the community facing forced conversion as well as other atrocities, and said that India should take a stand against it by not sending a team to Pakistan.
He further believes the Champions Trophy will be played in a hybrid model, similar to what happened with the 2023 Asia Cup. At that time, India's matches were played in Sri Lanka, a neutral venue.
Kaneria also ripped apart the current cricket team's broken structure, saying there are too many players who think they are stars but are not. He touched upon how star players like Babar Azam and Shaheen Shah Afridi have 'lobbies' of their own and adds that this does not make for a harmonious dressing room.
He further says that the current team lacks big personalities yet is still being run by the players, meaning there will never be any form of control within the players. And the blame for this, in his opinion, is the Pakistan Cricket Board.
Even the nation's popular T20 league, the Pakistan Super League, doesn't escape his crosshairs. When comparing it to the Indian Premier League (IPL), he says that the PSL lacks in both quality and star power.
Kaneria also touches on his admiration for the BCCI and secretary Jay Shah, as well as what he thinks the issues are with the current Pakistan cricket team.
