I'm a new subscriber as of last week and am so touched with the story of your mother and her socks you've knit for her. My own mother passed away from Alzheimer's earlier this year and my family lived with my parents for the last 4 years of her life to help take care of her, so I'm intimately acquainted with how precious those moments are when someone so dear to us can remember something about us and hold a connection like that. What a precious and tremendous blessing. I learned to knit several years ago while living outside of the country and the first thing I ever knit was a scarf for my mother. I sent it to her and she treasured it until it was lost somewhere along the way. I'm sure that it was forgotten somewhere at church or in a restaurant or some such place as her illness progressed, but I loved that she loved it and proudly told people her daughter had made it for her when they commented on it. As I've journeying through life, I've experienced some losses that have been so profound and so unusual that I felt all alone and that there was no one who truly understood what I was going through, so I wanted you to know that I truly understand the connection you have with knitting socks for your mother and the desire you have to do so.

Roxanne, thank you so much for yet another great episode! I don't follow that many podcasts anymore, but your channel is the one that I keep coming back to. As a fellow knitter who is interested in the technical side of knitting and all the finishing techniques, your approach to knitting and design has always been inspiring. I must admit that, at times, it is quite lonely to be a meticulous knitter (I call myself the fussy knitter), and your videos always provide some comfort on days when I feel like I am probably a little crazy being so fussy about a technique. And what a coincidence! I'm currently working on a Christmas stocking design. The Latvian braid jog problem did bother me, and I had ripped the braid back about 5 times until I found the way to minimise the jog. I am curious, and can't wait to see what you have come up with! I bet it's a brilliant and smart way! I will probably mention you over on IG when I talk about my stocking (I'm @joyancefibrearts over on IG). I am finishing my stocking right now as we speak, knitting it using the Chiagoo short interchangeables. Looking forward to your next upload and happy knitting! =)

Roxanne, So much information. Thanks for sharing this beautiful book and all of your insights! I took up my Mom's tradition for knitting Christmas Stockings for our ever expanding family, when she passed away 12 years ago. She began this tradition in the early 1960's. Her pattern was a chart on graph paper and loosely written . I don't know for sure where she even got it from but I discovered the pattern was circa 1941!. The original construction was to knit the leg of the stocking flat until the heel and foot, then use DPN's, seaming the stocking up the back. Well, I wasn't having anything to do with that so I began knitting them in the round, but the intarsia parts were really messy and I didn't like the bumply turn created or the jog you could see when at the color changes for the bands. Long story short...I now use a jogless color change method and recently came across another wonderful teacher-of-all-things knit, Suzanne Bryan, who has some wonderful RU-vid tutorials for how to knit intarsia in the round without having a turning seam...I am still working this one out as my intarsia isn't just blocks of colors that expand and contract, it's candle sticks that are a bit tricky. The result is a bit more ends to weave in, but ultimately, it's much neater and less frustrating, maybe! hahaha!! Let me know if you want more information on the jogless join for color change! Happy Holidays! Pamela Watson Miss Pam's Creations

In knitting New Foundland mittens, I discovered that the kind of jog less knitting is solved by adding a pepper pattern . stranded knitting. Alternating the colors you are working with every stitch, this solves the neat overflows to the pattern.

I love this episode, Roxanne! Thanks for the detailed Flexi-Flips XL review, and for sharing your family’s various holiday traditions. I grew up in a home with parents who came from different religious backgrounds (Jewish and Christian), though they were not religious people as adults, so all those holidays were celebrated, but in a secular fashion. Now that I’m grown (ha! 50+, actually), my husband and I celebrate the Winter Solstice. And, of course, we have a Charlie Brown “Solstice” tree! 😁🎄

Oh! (Later in the podcast). About the needle tips. I bought the Addi lace click interchangeables. I love them. And despite having pretty small-average hands I still have a problem knitting with them, but I’ve never figured out why. So now I have ordered a set with the longer tips. And I will most likely sell the shorter ones...

Have you looked into the ChiaGoo needles the now make a red and a blue tiny 3” or so cable where you can use you interchangeable tips on since the make a tiny 5” tip it could be used with the cables. You will need the reducer to make a small into a tiny cable join for the red I believe but the blue are for the small. Going by memory hear but check out Handsome Fibers site and look at the interchangeable selection of cables and tip. I like a 5” needle as well. Check it out

I think I read somewhere that the natt-trøja has nothing to do with night (danish: natt), but rather with the German word “naht” that comes from sewing. Makes much more sense! In Sweden we had a similar confusion. In the beginning the faster trains were Called snäll-tåg (=nice trains) that really had nothing to do with being nice or pleasant. But came from the German Schnell=fast.

The original version of the Høxbro book is called "strik danske stjernetrøjer" in danish. It translates directly to "knit Danish starsweaters". As a dane I find it kinda funny that they chose to translate it to nightsweaters in the english version. The starpattern is such a big part of what makes them unique. And the wore them to church and so on. A fun fact for you to know that they are called star and not night sweaters over here. It's a beautiful book. And so interesting from a historic perspective.
@RoxanneRichardson
@RoxanneRichardson 4 года назад
That's so interesting! She does mention that museums call them by lots of different names, but none of the terms she mentions is "stjernetrøjer"! She lists striktrøjer, strixtrøjer, bindtrøjer, loenketrøjer, pindtrøjer, and nattrøjer. And there is a fair amount of speculation about why stars are so prominent in the designs, as well. Fascinating that the translation is presented a bit differently for an English-speaking audience unfamiliar with the tradition. Such amazing sweaters and stars. I have my eye on a few that I feel I will have to knit.

Actually Rox, the wider grip on a needle is excellent. My father was Norwegian and had very wide hands and though I am female, my hands are wider than many women though in height I am not really tall: 5'5". I play the piano and can play Scott Joplin and the most I can play is 2 notes on the white keys, past the octave. In the meanwhile I was able to teach myself to be able to manage to use ChiaoGoo Mini Lace Twists. ChiaoGoo has the short cables in the Blue (small cable joins) and the Red (mini cable joins). And they have extra tips now of various lengths to pair with the 2" cords. I think this is my next investment. Recently got the Blue mini tips for doing cuffs and am doing many baby socks and booties as my daughter-in-law is pregnant with TWINS!!! So I've been doing loads of knitting. I have some arthritis in my fingers but for me to be as arthritis free, went dairy free and now I am all animal/fish/seafood protein out of my diet and it has eased up my hands and instead of MoveFREE (Glucosamine Chondrotin by Schiff), I switched to turmeric in capsules. This reduces inflammation and it is much more affordable and easy on stomach too. Before that, using extra small needles was not happening. But with the wide hands I have, I definitely understand where you are coming from.

Seeing this episode, I came to realize how I found your channel. It was your video about the flexi flips! What you said about the heel flap stitches issue today, came to my mind back then. Sylvia - the 'CraSy' in the original name - simply only mentions or makes boomerang\short-row heels. Now, the original flexi flips are available in bigger diameters as well, the promotion by Sylvia being, one could use them for hats and sleeves. That certainly wasn't playing out (unless knitting baby hats and baby cardis). I also wonder why the xl ones aren't available in smaller diameters and why the bamboos are longer. Maybe I will just write to addi; should have some advantage to be a German native speaker just for once in the knitter universe.

the flexi flip info was nice... but i'm curious why you don't use traveling loop instead of magic loop for the stockings? your previous tutorial on that was great! i've been using it on colorworkhats and don't have the 'tight corner' issue...
@RoxanneRichardson
@RoxanneRichardson 4 года назад
Because the circumference is too small. In order to keep the loop in one place for the entire round, the circumference has to be large enough to knit using a circ with a standard length tip (5''), but the stocking is only about 13 or 14'' around, making it too small to knit even on a 16'' circ, which has 4'' tips. I could use the make-do technique of yanking out the cord every so often, but that makes keeping track of where I am in any given repeat of the pattern difficult.

I don't have it listed. I have debated about whether or not I want to do that, since I designed it for my brother's family. You're not the only one to ask. I would need to have it test knit and tech edited, and at the moment I have other patterns queued up for that process. Perhaps I will be able to do that in time for next holiday season.

Thanks for the flexi flip review. I am trying to choose between metal and bamboo. I most often get gauge with wood (not bamboo) and find bamboo has some major drag. What did you think about the difference between the two materials?
@RoxanneRichardson
@RoxanneRichardson Год назад
I don't tend to experience a difference in tension between metal and bamboo needles. What I liked about the bamboo needles were that the tips were somewhat longer than the original metal ones. The new square versions are longer still, but I'm not a fan of a non-round needle. If you have an LYS in your area that carries these, they might let you try them out in the shop to see what you think before buying.

He learned to spin because he thought the company that produces z-twist yarn was going to close. A relative of the owner returned to Sweden to run the company, and it was still in operation the summer of 2018, but now I see the website is gone. I did see that Nancy Bush's company Wooly West carries Mora, a z-twist yarn spun in Sweden in something like 50 colors. Thanks for the reply. I only see three shades at Wooly West: a natural white and two grays. The last z-plied yarn I bought in colors was from Ingbretsen's which I think is in your neck of the woods; Minnesota or Michigan. I'm always keeping a lookout for more suppliers. I'm not a spinner, but maybe some day I could locate a local spinner and ask if it's possible for them to do some for me (at an affordable price).
