He was always a douche... good-hearted, likeable, just really afraid of secure attachment to someone else. It’s very well set up all throughout the show that, in spite of how great he is, Danny is a hard person to love. And that’s okay. It’s how life is sometimes. He turns into a different sort of person, but he’s always got that same core. And so does Mindy. That’s what makes it work.

I couldn't even finish the season it hurt me lol I had to skip to the last episode when they got together. But that ending made me happy but wasn't good enough they never should have changed his character

I didn’t think it was toxic. I think he was set in his ways and he had been hurt a lot and he tried to control everything and make it his version of perfect and he didn’t trust her as much as he should have. That’s what made him a jerk. But it was also an opportunity for her to stand up for herself and not leap into marriage for the sake of it. It was painful to watch as they fell apart.

I wouldn't say he was out of character but it was more of a regression and put on the extreme.

NatashaNicole i dont know if i think hes out of character or if we just saw a different side of him. i hated danny after Leo was born, the way he treated mindy was hella mean and broke my love for his character. they shouldve shown dannys love for mindy more - i think they wouldve broken up soon after the dinner with his family if she didnt get pregnant. even in the end we rarely see danny. he married someone else completely, the only hint that he still loved her was when he called her before he got married and told morgan he cant do it. it pissed me off when they got back together and he was already complaining - true he was willing to adjust for her but how do we know it wasnt for Leo.

I think they were giving us a lot of data about him throughout the series before the romantic storyline---namely that he had controlling tendencies, a LOT of opinions about what women should and shouldn't do, and many other things. I agree they made it terribly bad after Leo was born, to the point of edging into emotional abuse territory. I've heard they intentionally sabotaged his storyline in Season 4 because the actor wanted to leave the series to pursue film acting and then tried to clean it up later when they decided to have a reunion at the end of the series.

That is why the made him unbearable. Chris wanted to step back from the show some. They still could have had him on and not made him such a jerk in season 4. They had this great chemistry.

The part that got me was when she went to measure her closet. It was heartbreaking.

Which sadly is what the show consistently did to all of Mindy's major love interests in order to write them off the show starting with Josh. But the biggest 'betrayal'! was the horrific writing they did to the character of Danny to validate Mindy finishing it because they had to make her be the victim. Which is what one of the producers said in that were the fans on her side. And they did it in such a way that there was no coming back from it for many. I love Danny and don't really consider the Danny that return from looking after his dad and trying to forcingly impregnate Mindy to not be the real dad because while in no way was Danny the perfect person, the way he was written before Chris decided to leave show, for me there is NO WAY that Danny would act in the despicable way. It's such a shame that the writers who brought about this amazing and interesting couple should end up damaging them so badly.

thank you for assuming i’m a nice person - i try to be - but when i get condescending comments like these a million times from ppl implying that i don’t what an abusive relationship is, forgive me, but i’m not going to sound very nice & i’m not going to be brief bc ykw? i’m tired! i made a romantic ship video for these two because they’re a fictional couple on a satirical sitcom with great chemistry and if i critiqued their relationship for being toxic/abusive then i’d have to critique every single aspect of the show (like the characters, plots, jokes & lines) that can be considered “problematic” which is a lot and honestly i don’t have the energy to do all that when i’m watching a silly little sitcom! and since we’re asking questions that really have no point to them other than to seem pompous & self-righteous, i am interested to know why you would click on a video when it’s so clearly in support of a relationship that you don’t agree with and then choose to leave a negative comment in a mostly positive space? you obviously know my opinion and now i unfortunately now know yours, but the difference is that i truly don’t care about yours. i didn’t ask for it but i’m aware it’s not the same as mine & that’s ok with me - just don’t tell me about it and don’t try to change mine bc i’m not trying to change yours! anyways… i hope that answered your question and i wish you well! maybe next time if you wanna talk about how much you don’t like a ship, just make your own video about it & invite other like-minded people to have this conversation with you instead of me, thanks!

I think that this video came up in a suggested thing for me on here and I was kinda interested in the show as I like sitcom ships and a lot of the actors in this show but once I saw how abusive Danny is, it really put me off it and as I say, it’s fine to like the show but there’s a difference in being satirical and/or self-aware with having flawed characters do some messed up things and learn/grow and doing what this show did and framing an abusive relationship as not only ok but the main, endgame ship, which is a big problem.

@@heatherstephenson3559 and i completely understand your perspective! i’m not defending anything that danny did and i’m absolutely aware of all his red flags he has but again i have to emphasize that this is fictional. and that’s not to minimize “abusive” relationships, it’s to point out the fact that, unlike reality, things in fiction - especially in tv shows with their overall lack of permanence - sometimes need to have their story adjusted to accommodate the things happening beyond the universe of the fictional world. for this specific case, danny’s character had to be written in a way that makes it easy for his actor, chris messina, to leave the show in s4. and when it’s the main character’s love interest & baby daddy - that’s a very difficult task to do and quite impossible to write without it being absolutely heartbreaking but i think the writers did it in a realistic way. also i think that people fail to see that danny’s characterization in s4 was never glorified. mindy left him and she was absolutely right to to do so and she never got back together with him until in the finale when she felt that he had changed. but again - you see things one way, i see it in another - i’m not trying to tell you that you’re wrong or to change your perspective bc i understand that it’s not easy to consider the real-world impact in the writing when you’re immersing yourself in a fictional world but i do and i don’t think my way of viewing media is wrong bc i find it easier to enjoy fiction with this mindset - it’s what works for me. so i’m gonna stop here bc frankly i don’t want to talk to about this anymore so let’s just agree to disagree and move on with our lives!
