A manager instills his personality and thinking on the team. That is a Southgate team 100%. We took the kick off, straight back to Pickford who lumps it forward giving it to Spain. I knew immediately we would not win it. Only way to beat teams like Spain is to go at them and hurry them, press…press…press. Southgate has no flair, he didn’t as a player.

Few things noticed : 1. Harry Kane's legs are gone. 2. Declan & Mainoo rarely pass the ball forward. Adam Wharton would. 3. The team has no pace at the wings. Gordon & Bowen could've played more. 4. Jude's is either a no 10 or 8. Not on the left.

@warreng5257
@warreng5257 Месяц назад
Kane has never had legs. Southgate just stuck with Kane when he was performing badly because they are buddies. Mainoo always looks for the forward ball, he's definitely more progressive than Wharton. Rice made a lot of backwards/sideways passes, but I think this was more to do with the midfield being congested, as he plays for one of the most progressive teams in the Premier league, and passes for forward there. Why was the midfield congested? Because Kane can't run in behind defences and stretch defences, it invites thr opposition defence to push up and thus the their midfield to push, leaving little space between the lines. Gordon is very fast, not sure Bowen is any or much faster than Saka. Gordon definitely should have started or played more, and the smart decision would be to simply play either/or Foden and Bellingham, we just kept trying to force aas many "names" into a team as possible, ignoring form and balance.

This has been my problem for years, ive never known England to have a particular style of play, we've always just passed it back to the keeper and oofed it up, hoping we can go on and score. I never got it because we've always had talented players. Do i think this is the best crop of players we've had? No, but they're certainly talented. It's so jarring seeing players like Foden and Bellingham who've had brilliant seasons for their clubs play like headless chickens half the time for England. Why is our manager playing Kane knowing he isn't fit when we have other strikers who've made a better impact in the little time they've played? I think we need a manager who has a playing style that suits the players we have and someone who will be ruthless in his selection of players.

You HAVE to start to understand why england dont win, we were not able to get enough players forward, we were exceptionally bad on the ball most of the tournament, there wasnt enough movement and effort to get into space, kyle walker stood ready to take a throw in for about 20 minutes because nobody is in space. Pickford with players either side of him kicking it long time and time again, impatience when we do turn possession over just like when we lost to portugal in 2006. Weve learned nothing from pep, klopp, arteta, because when its "just" us doing it on our own we go back to 90s football. Big lumbering centre forward, he even would have played maguire if he was fit.. be honest. These arent footballers, spain had footballers all over the pitch. @@tevildo45 They arranged to award penalties for them at the most minimum contact and not to be checked by var so that they won't rectify them, had they done that those "penalties" would have been disallowed. Almost all penalties for argentina were to open matches so that they could control the game, except in the match with Netherlands. France were awarded legit penalties, unlike argentina's, and take into account it was france, a powerful federation that won fair and square world titles in both ocassions so they have enough weight to prevent not being given both legit penalties. Like it or not, argentina was practically handed the title by fifa only because infantino is a fan and a friend of messi, though i would say they are much more than that, and also because the ruler (owner) of qatar is another fan. Those two people joined forces and made a plan through the refering to make messi win the world cup since he would've never achieved that on their own (even with a more competitive team like the current one) as shown every single time he wasn't helped. He was this close to lose to France so in the end they barely managed to fullfil their plan, thus without those "penalties" it wouldn't have been enough to reach the final let alone win the world cup.

We really need a modern-thinking manager who recognises all the talent at his disposal and creates a system to unleash that potential. NOT Pickford hoofing it up to Kane who doesn’t make any effort to hold or contest the ball, and then giving it straight back to the opponents.

Why would the FA want to keep a Manager on who hasn't delivered after 8 years? A better Manager would get the best out of these top players - Kane is no longer in that category, Gareth still thinks he is. He didn't have a Captain's tournament.

People should remember Spain were a great team and England did well to hang in the game and could have equalised in the closing moments. Also so called experienced former England managers never managed a Semi or Final in Fifty years since Ramsey . Southgate’s record is only second to Ramsey.

Southgate was the right man too get us out of the post hodgeson doldrums we were in, he instilled a sesne of togetherness that england teams have struggled with, however the team we have is the product of deliberate and dedicated player development at the FA via the EPP programe and St Georges park. However he needed to movemon once the broad culture had been set and players bedded in, to win tournaments we need a manager with elite tactical acumen. Unfortunatley southgate is not that guy like the commentators said, another more sucessful coach could have worked wonders with this crop. The only consolation is that this generation of players has come about thanks to a deliberate design, rather than chance like the so called golden generation. So i am confident that either this crop or the next, so long as they have a decent manager can do something

When Southgate took over he picked form players over names but reverted back to the England way this tournament. If Walker, Bellingham, Foden (huge fan btw) and Kane were replaced with TAA, Palmer, Gordon and Watkins, we’d have had a decent chance last night.

Bellingham? You watching him? He was excellent. He is in a poor set up. Foden and he had to move around to get on the ball. In a Pep team, they do not move. They are patient and trusting. The set up is a mess. They do not need two sitting midfielders. Rice and Mainoo did not work. Rice is not needed to sit so deep. He needs to be a better ball player higher up. Kane was miles off; why?

England have no agreed upon philosophy. You could see that when things aren't going to plan Bellingham does what he wants and vacates his position. Foden throwing his arms up and moaning in the first game that his team mates are lumping the ball forward. England don't wanna play football. They want a team of roll your sleeve up players.

You don't pick fit left back, don't start your only left winger, put a fullback in at midfield, place two number tens together and continue to start an out of form striker, who only wants to come come deep into the same space inhabited by by Bellingham and Phoden. If I didn't know any better, this would suggest a subtle attempt at sabotage.

The problem is that the manager must incorporate into a disparate team all sorts of different playing styles which players have been taught by different club managers. That takes time and the manager has not got that time to do it. So there must be some sympathy for Southgate. But against that, all international managers face the same problem and of course some are very successful. Ergo it follows that Southgate must be shipped out and someone with more ingame and out of game tactical management skills brought in. If that means dropping established names and putting in players who do meld better, we need to do it and fast.

Everytime I listen to talksport, I'm usually keen on Simon Jordan's take about the matter because I find him clear and consistent in his thoughts and opinions, Alex and other pundits that come on here usually have an ever changing tone based on the circumstance or outcome of a game. I heard Alex suggest that walker had a "really poor tournament", with due respect sir but that comment is absolute nonsense. He may not have been a standout player of that squad but by no means was he "poor", ever present in that backline and perhaps one of the main reasons why the team even managed to reach a final from a defensive perspective. It's like the caller hinted, these guys are a group of really good players that are coming in with their reputations off their incredible entertaining clubs, provided with some of the most intricate thinking minds of the sport and is expected to replicate that in their national teams. They often have no consistent/reliable offensive structure and hence, each one just about plays with their hearts and not their mind during the heat of the moment. Love the show, very insightful from Mr Jordan as usual and all the best in your next tournament 🙏.

We cannot play the pressing game after a long season. To play that way you need to be good in possession otherwise it's way too tiring. Southgate got the tactics spot on. Kept the pace slow and tried to hold ball with technically limited players trying to win games with moments of genius. It got us to the final. Let's give him credit. England were well prepared for the penalties.

I disagree with Simon saying that the only reason Argentina won the last world cup is cos of Messi,did he forget about Emi Martinez & the massive performances & saves he put in to all their games in the tournament & has done exactly the same in their last Copa America wins. Football is a team/squad game & everyone played their part,but the 2 players that made a big difference between winning or not were Martinez & Messi who has praised Martinez on a number of occasions too state that fact.

In Spain all football coaches have their UEFA badges. This means that children starting out are coached in the same skills that professionals are required to have (at much more advanced levels). Spain are seeing the fruits of this endeavour that started many many years ago. Spanish players are more comfortable on the ball, have a better first touch and clearer understanding of how to play as a team. It´s really not rocket science chaps!

I keep hearing we have the best players at clubs, but what people are forgetting this play with good players at club level. Personally think the players are hiding under the narrative of that the manager is negative, all the previous managers can’t be bad, England has never played open, offensive football, so let us go get the manager that will play open expansive football and let see the excuse from the players.
