We sit down with Danny Tenaglia just days after we watched him perform for the first time, and Danny shared an hour-long education on the history of clubbing in New York City. Over the conversation, he talks about Larry Levan, the Paradise Garage, his residencies at Twilo and Tunnel, his "Be Yourself" party at Vinyl, his Global Underground mixes, and the Winter Music Conference.
Danny is truly an encyclopedia of music history, and we left this conversation with a better understanding of what house music is all about and what people mean when they talk about the magic of Danny Tenaglia. Thank you Danny!

he's a little Italian boy from Brooklyn!!!!! deep house was more emotional, thank you for this wonderful explanation of HOUSE MUSIC, pre disco, pro disco, CHUKA KHAN, and yes, it was a foot stomping, church setting vibe, ALVIN ALLEY, oh yes, the energy was unbelievable, emotional, joyful and miraculous!!!!! I danced at after hour clubs from the 1970s on and always sang along. The entire room was like one voice!!!! For me, it def felt like CHURCH!!!!! I remember wearing a whistle around my neck. Now, in 2021, I am a 71 yr old Sicilian woman from Brooklyn, living in VT and every morning I play the songs from the Paradise Garage and dance with my 3 year old grandson because I want him to experience the music I love. Your spirit is amazing, your love of music is such a blessing. The magic is in the music and the music is in you. Thanks, thanks, thanks

Twilo head here. What a time...what a place...what a sound. Like Danny said...we can talk about it for a month...but no words can really encapsulate it. It needed to be felt and heard. Truly a special moment in the history of anything to do with music, sound, energy, spirituality, etc etc. If I could bring back one span of time from any era...it would be Twilo from 1998-2001. "It's not trance...it's magic." PS...the guys who currently run Muzika in Hell's Kitchen (west side) are doing their best to recreate it...especially with the 4 sided stacks, as Danny describes here. I actually heard Danny at Muzika recently. I felt maybe 1/10th of what I felt at Twilo. Really had a good time. They're trying. I give them props. But 2024 aint 1999. ;) It is what it is. We'll always have West 27th Street. :)

My favourite DJ. Comes across so well here - really humble. I remember buying his Tourism album on vinyl and loving the dark twisted vibes of the songs. Great natural feel for music, very cultured palette and he always enjoyed himself. l lots of live edits done on the night. Saw him once in London at Home and was magical.

Brilliant interview with probably the most influential DJ theres is on the house scene, not really a progressive DJ, just a guy who understands and gets music like no one else, saw him at Homelands in 2001, he did his two hand held torches things with no other lights in the tent and it blew my mind, played over a deep pounding bass track, legendary.

Thank you for this great interview! It brought back lots of memories and anecdotes. I´m a DJ myself and I happened to live about four blocks from the Zanzibar in Newark, NJ and I could hear Tony Humphries pump all those bombs all night. I also went to NYC to most of the clubs that Danny mentioned. The crowds were so amazing, even though the sound were not as loud as today's systems, but they sounded so amazing, that they gave me goosebumps all night long! Those were the best years of my life! Today, at 52, I'm still spinning whenever I get the chance and I still have almost all my vinyl records with me!

The secret sauce behind the GU mix comps in the early days allegedly was that due to the incredible cost of licensing a lot of the tracks back then (that dj's actually wanted to pick) they were asked to pick more obscure tunes, and that quickly became the style and it worked really well. That and also the djs loved going on holiday. My favorite memory of Danny was watching him play at Space in Ibiza, and the one track that always reminds me of him is Minimal Funk 4 - "Definition of House" which I think is actually on one of those GU mixes... absolute stone cold banger to get the place rocking! Great interview.

Thanks a lot for this great interview. Danny is respectful, careful in his wording, always generous in sharing. I've always been a huge fan of Danny, and sadly I have always missed him and never heard him play for real. I have a lot of his records and mixtapes that I played a hundred times in my bedroom and on the road. But being from France, although the house music scene is big here, the culture of extended DJ sets is small compared to North America. Danny does not come to France usually, because people don't know him here. That's my biggest regret in my clubbing life, not being able to hear him. There are not many artists I really look up to, to me he is the quintessence of the DJ, playing with your emotions, taking you on a tour, which even became his trademark. The closest I ever got to hear him was when I spent one year in Montreal, STEREO was my home for many week-ends, but somehow I missed him. Maybe I'll get to hear him one day. And if I don't, that's fine too, knowing he brought so much enjoyment to so many people on this Earth. THANK YOU DANNY!

I caught him a few times at Be Yourself at Vinyl. His programming was bonkers. He was dropping the spoken word of Vincent Price on the intro to thriller and at the end of it looped him saying “alive” over and over again… then dropped out all music and mixed in daft punk’s “alive”… which is an instrumental but the real house heads went bonkers. So many great memories of that party ❤

OMG. When it was Danny vs Danny @ ARC... he opened his set, by talking on the mic.... but he had this “track” that was just background noise..... it sounded like you were on a dock, in the middle of the night, and you could hear this bell ringing, then there would be this fog horn sound, like it came from a boat...... but Danny T would romp on that isolator bass knob.... it was amazing ..... Then later in his set..... he drops this track, with this woman saying .....” I like them boom boom beats” , then it would drop back in. Fricking amazing. And yeah ...... he use to play for 24hours at winter music festival, down in Miami...
