The video is dedicated to Danny Torrance from Stephen King's "The Shining". I wanted to combine two images of Danny in this video: little Danny from Stanley Kubrick's "The Shining" and adult Danny from Mike Flanagan's "Doctor Sleep". The center of the video is a monologue of an adult Danny as he returns to the place of his trauma, the Overlook Hotel. Thematically, the video is divided into three parts. The first part is about Wendy, Danny's mother. About how the events they experienced in the Overlook influenced their later lives and relationships with each other. The second part is about Danny's connection with his shining, which he calls Tony. This is his sensitivity, his ability, his inner strength and intuition. But this is also his burden, because the shining can give both a lot of light and dark. The third and final part focuses on Danny's relationship with his alcohol addiction and how it relates to his desire to silence the shining. Danny's relationship with alcohol is also linked to his traumatic memories of his father, Jack Torrance.
The main theme of the video is how the main ghosts in life are traumatic memories that haunt one's whole life. The way the image of Danny as a child intersects with the adult Danny shows the cyclical nature of memories. How Danny lives in the Overlook Hotel all his life and experiences the same events over and over again. Under the weight of memories, by the end of the monologue, Danny mentally and physically turns into a child. The body language shows how much he is still the same frightened and injured child. Danny's story ends with his fondest memories of his mother. If heavy memories remained with him forever, then he also retained the brightest ones.
I want to note the musical accompaniment in the video. This is The Caretaker - It's just a burning memory. The Caretaker is a project of English electronic musician Leyland James Kirby. His work under this pseudonym was characterized by an exploration of memory and its gradual deterioration, nostalgia and melancholy. The project was originally inspired by the haunted ballroom scene in the 1980 film "The Shining", with his first works consisting of processed Samples of 1930s ballroom pop recordings. The very name of the project The Caretaker is a reference to the position of a hotel caretaker. His music perfectly reflects the theme of cyclical memories. These are sound disorientation, destroyed and abandoned ballrooms, constant repetition of phrases and the sound of a damaged record as an image of a distorted memory.
