Throughout the '60s, Trejo was in and out of jail and prison in California; Trejo has suggested that his physical appearance contributed to his constantly getting into trouble. There are conflicting accounts of his prison chronology. By one account, his final term in custody ended in 1972; by another account, he did time in a juvenile offenders' camp and six California prisons between 1959 and 1969. He recalled that his last prison term was five years. While serving in San Quentin, he became a champion boxer in that prison's lightweight and welterweight divisions. During this time, Trejo became a member of a 12-step program , which he credits with his success in overcoming drug addiction. In 2011, he recalled that he had been sober for 42 years.

I think this lady believes that if someone has a rocky past they're branded for life even though there are more people who have done worse and never been caught. I am one of those who had a really tough childhood gangs and I thank God for me growing up that way because I saw a lot of bad things and is treated really bad thank God has given me a good heart and when I see people who are and gangs or having a rough life I don't judge them if I have the chance to talk to them I tell them that God is there and he's listening talk to him and he will answer you

Danny has always been an inspiration to me. The guy does time in San Quentin, becomes a prison boxing champ of two weight classes. Was a drug addict, now sober for something like 50 years. Was a construction worker who went on to be an actor. The guys entire story is just something else.

It was actually a clever joke by that reporter. Seemed to me Danny was supposed to plug his spot he's in, and proceeded to take up more airtime to promote every business he has, and is coming up. So the reporter said I can play that game too. I found it funny.
