Hip-hop has come a long way since its inception in the streets of the Bronx in the late 70s. With each passing year, the genre has evolved to attract a wider audience. While many have contributed to the growth of hip-hop, few have been as influential as Dante Ross, a prominent figure in the golden era of hip-hop who has worked with some of the biggest names in the industry. In this blog post, we'll dive into Dante Ross's latest memoir, 'Son of the City,' and his appearance on Sway In The Morning where he delved into his career in the hip-hop industry.
Dante Ross grew up in New York's Lower East Side where he was raised by political activists. Ross's upbringing influenced his passion for hip-hop, a genre that he believes has the power to effect positive change. In his memoir, 'Son of the City,' Ross shares anecdotes from his time working as an A&R executive at Tommy Boy Records, where he signed and managed De La Soul and Queen Latifah, and Elektra Records, where he worked with legends such as Busta Rhymes and Ol' Dirty Bastard.
Ross's contributions to hip-hop do not stop there. He also made a name for himself as a producer, working with a range of artists such as Del the Funky Homosapien, Run-DMC, and Everlast. Ross's production work on Carlos Santana’s Supernatural earned him a Grammy in 1999, and he produced two songs featuring Macy Gray and Young Z for the soundtrack to the critically-acclaimed movie, Eminem's '8 Mile.'
In his Sway In The Morning interview, Ross touched on the inspiration behind his book, which he describes as a memoir, self-help, and history book all rolled into one. He spoke about his love for hip-hop and how he believes it can help bring about social change. Ross also shared stories about his work with some of the biggest names in the industry, offering insight into his creative process and the challenges he faced.
Dante Ross's memoir, 'Son of the City,' is a must-read for anyone interested in the history of hip-hop and the industry's evolution. The book offers an inside look at the golden era of hip-hop and the key players who helped shape the genre into what it is today. Ross's appearance on Sway In The Morning gives fans a taste of what's to come in his memoir. His wit, charm, and extensive knowledge of the industry make him a fascinating and engaging guest. Whether you're a hip-hop head or just curious about the genre's origins, Dante Ross's memoir is a must-read.

I drove to SF from Vegas with my best friend to watch a Marlon Craft show back in '19. I got the meet and greet tickets so I can meet up with Marlon after and whatever. After the show we got brought up to meet Marlon and he was mad cool. We take a pic with him, talk some Knicks, and he goes "wanna take a picture with Dante?". Now, Dante Ross to me was always a goat in the sense that I knew what he meant to the golden era of hip hop. I just never knew what the fuck he looked like cuz I literally always read about him, and his importance, but he's kinda a low key dude. He's not like Puff and them. So when Marlon asked me, I was like "Dante Ross???". He's like "yeah". At that point, in my head, I didn't wanna seem starstruck, but I was like "holy shit". Anyways, Dante came up, was mad cool, and took a pic with me and my best friend who next year committed suicide during the pandemic. It's a pic I keep with me on my office desk at all times. Thank you for that moment, Dante.

If you get the the book- he has very little time for MC Serch; he produced Pop Goes the Weasel- but Ross claims he never got a royalty check for it- despite it selling very well..

Yeah I mean..not knowing anything about their relationship in particular, and Serch does have some epic stories, but his attitude has always seemed a little suspect to me.

Yo I can't find the book he mentioned at 18:25, "The Power of Positive Thought". I can only find anything on "The Power of Positive Thinking" by Norman Vincent Peale. Anyone know if that's what he meant? Bc I definitely could use a book like that.
