Dante’s Peak was also a nominee for best visual effects in 1997 but lost to Titanic by just a few votes. A couple of reasons why this movie was pretty accurate to what a volcano can do is because the director, Roger Donaldson (also directed Species and The November Man) went to college to get a degree in geology but later decided to go into film directory. The production crew even had several volcanologists and geologists from the USGS on hand to make sure that the movie was as accurate as possible, including some inspiration from Mt. St. Helens and Mt. Pinatubo. The incident at the beginning of the movie was based on the Galeras Volcano when several volcanologists perished when doing surveys in the mountain when it unexpectedly erupted.

He just didn't want him calling a town evacuation without consulting him first and doing more study. In all fairness to the boss guy some of the early data was circumstantial, and when he finally saw the drinking water for himself he immediately called for an Alert.

@@radicalreactions1633 I did watch it again and I stand by what I said. Part of what makes the plot in this film good is you can see both people's point of view, it was a freak situation that caught everybody else but Harry off guard because every disaster movie has the hero that sees it coming but nobody else does, but Harrys boss, Paul wasn't totally wrong about how to handle the situation either, because all the readings they were gathering didn't indicate an eruption until a few hours before it actually happened. Paul actually called an alert just based on the drinking water because he knew Harry was right at that point, then the next morning was when all the crazy readings started pouring in.

I'm from Washington State. Graduated in 1980. I was out hiking when St. Helen's blew. We woke up from the eruption. Sometime later we heard what sounded like rain. Looked outside the tent and it was ashing! We were grey men by the time we got to the truck a couple hours later. It was otherworldly outside. Dark, quiet, with dust swirling on the roads. No one out, rightfully so. Something I'll never forget.

I was in Richland, WA when the mountain blew. The ash cloud went east and closed all the north/south roads cutting the state in half. We risked it by heading north on small roads since the main roads were patrolled by WSP. We made it to our destination but had to stop every few miles to shake the ash out of the air filter. I still have a 10 lb bag of ash for some unknown reason!

In the early 1990s before the Second set of eruptions people were allowed to walk into the crater of Mt Saint Hellens. Me and some friends got into my new van and took a road trip from Seattle to the Mountain for a day hike. We walked into the crater on a beautiful sunny day. I got to put my hand on the lava dome. In that moment I realized how truly tiny I was as I felt the pulls of the earth under my palm. It was Life changing.

The grandma's story mimics the story of Harry Truman, caretaker of Mount St. Helens Lodge at Spirit Lake near the base of the mountain. He refused to evacuate and the mountain took him when it erupted on 18 May, 1980. The site where the lodge was is buried under 150' of debris and ash from the eruption. As a kid who experienced that eruption from a safe distance away, I can tell you, everyone was surprised by it and it shook up a lot of people. This film is amazing because they went to great lengths to show what goes on with an eruption. While Dante's Peak is a fictional town, there are many small towns surrounding the volcanos in the Cascade Mountains of Washington, Oregon, and California that could all face similar circumstances if their particular volcano erupts. I'm glad you got a chance to see this film, and I highly suggest you take a vacation to the west coast and experience the various volcanoes up close and personal. You'll have a stronger appreciation for them when you see just how big they are.

You probably weren't alive yet when Mt St Helens blew in 1980. I think you'd really find the documentaries about it very interesting. There was an elderly named Harry R. Truman who refused to leave his home just like Grandma here, and he lost his life in the Mt St Helen's eruption

I was going to add that. I was a senior in HS when it started rumbling. It was closely monitored. I lived in Longview WA, about 60 miles from Mt. St. Helen's. It finally blew while I was on a school science camping trip to the Olympic Peninsula, where I've coincidentally been living my entire adult life. It blew the day before my 18th birthday... we hightailed it home after hearing the booms echoing off the mountain ranges, a 4 hour trip away. Our school bus driver knew all the backroads, with the freeway closed down we got up close to the small towns near the mountain. It was dark and snowing ash. We saw log jams going down the rivers with homes floating... this movie is so realistic. Too bad we didn't have cell phones or even video cameras then. But there are lots of videos online if you want to see the real thing. The ash was inches deep and you couldn't go outside and breathe or drive in it... boring 18th bday.School was canceled and we graduated with grades from previous quarter. Luckily for some of us who had terrible cases of senioritis... it's amazing how it went from looking like a war zone to it's natural beauty again.

It’s about 7O mikes from Oregon and 170 miles to Seattle. We all remember where we were and what we were doing when it happened. My family and I were booking it South because the ash made everything dark. I lived in Vancouver wa. about 53 miles away. I wanted to wait for my Husband who was in Seattle. We had to leave. I live near Mt. St. Helens The USGS learned a LOT of things from that volcano. The town was filmed in Wallace ID. Mt. St. Helens was the model for the mountain. There is no "peaks" near Wallace. All Rocky mountain foothills. The ash from Mt. St. Helens would Literally KILL an engine on a car. The helicopter had zero hope!! Not all volcanoes spit out lava. Mt. St. Helens has lava but it is basically a dome inside the crater. St. Helen's was mainly ash. When that ash hits water like rivers, it turns into mud that has a texture of wet cement. When Paul died, he was stuck in the same kind of river...called a Lahar. The Toutle (tootel) river was a lahar that was shown with houses flowing down it and collided with the Interstate 5 bridge. The house got further totaled, The bridge pretty much survived.

Very much disagree. Dante’s Peak is far superior. But I realize it’s my subjective opinion. There are multiple examples of competing Hollywood studios making nearly identical films at the same time. My observation is that usually whichever one a person sees first they will defend to their death that it was the better film.

A pyroclastic flow (or cloud as he calls it in the movie) is the BIG ashy, explosive eruption we think of when we picture Mt. St. Helens and is the type of volcanos found in the Cascade Range of the West coast. They are called composite volcanos. A geology professor of mine said it's like being sandblasted at 10,000 degrees. The debris the killed his girlfriend in the beginning of the movie was a lava bomb. Blobs of molten rock that are ejected and harden when falling. In this movie there was lava but with composite volcanos, lava is not the danger. It would be the pyroclastic flow if you're on the mountian or the lahars (mudflows) that form when the heat from the blast rapidly melts glaciers and causes sudden and massive flooding that takes out trees, buildings and bridges like it did in the movie.

Pierce Brosnan has played two popular spies. He was Remington Steel on TV and then James Bond in the movies. What does a volcano and dead squirrels have to do with each other? Poisonous gas released from fissures on the mountain kill the squirrels. This is one of my favorite movies. I used to watch it every time i'd find it playing and just stop channel surfing no matter where it was in the movie. They did a lot of research on volcanoes to make this realistic as far as what happens in a true eruption. A lot of people think the lava is the most destructive part of an eruption, but the explosion and pyroclastic cloud destroys everything in its path like an Abomb. That's what happened at Mt. St. Helens. For my suggestion...watch the movie called THE WAVE.

Love this movie for the realism. I've walked a few active volcanos in my time. One thing that gets me is that you're not usually walking on rock near the crater. Its usually compacted ash, and it sounds hollow when the soundwaves from a blowing volcano vent pass through it. A very weird experience. My tip of the day. Watch out for Pele's Hair, even miles away from the volcano. Its lava that has been blasted into the air and stretched by the wind into very fine strands of glass-like obsidian. I made a very painful mistake going for a barefoot walk across what looked and felt like black sand 2 miles away from an active volcano. A few hours later and the pain from all the very tiny cuts hit hard. No blood. Just pain.

Fun fact: Volcanic ash makes Roman concrete and is both naturally hydraulic and about 10 times stronger than modern Portland cement based concrete. Much of Rome was built with it and lasted over 2000 yrs. It also has been found to have some self repair properties with minor cracks. One dome that had cracked, has resealed itself slowly over time through a process like what makes marble from limestone. Leached material re-crystalizes sealing the crack. That dome was made with broken pottery in the place of much of the gravel we use making it lighter as well. The poured dome also saved mass through a box like rib design. Wish I remembered the name of the site but it is often shown in roman design documentaries. I studied some of this in a History of Technology class while I got my BA in History. I also wished I remembered the spelling of the other name for Roman Concrete that starts with a "P" I can say it but the phone doesn't get it when I try to use foreign words in English. I took French in school and in my studies picked up a few words in others but not good outside English.

YOOOOOO! Haven't watched the reaction yet, just so hyped to see my favorite movie of all time pop up in my sub box. Almost nobody reacts to this thing and the hype I just felt seeing this show up is...just a great way to wrap out the day. Thank you! 17:56 This scene scared the crap out of me as a child, specifically the horn section of the music. No idea what about it got to me, but I would hide under the covers from that buildup. 20:26 "You better go to bed 'cause Mama's thirsty too." Girl, you broke me with that. Fun Fact: during the initial eruption, almost everything is practical effects. The volcano erupting was a massive scale model with explosives rigged inside superimposed on the skyline, and they actually destroyed a part of the town they filmed in that then got rebuilt by the money made from the movie (if I remember correctly). 31:26 Oh, it must've not come across. Ruth got out of the boat because they weren't going to make it, they were going too slow and the boat was filling too fast. She hopped out and pulled the boat to the shore so the rest of them could make it. 33:10 A somber note, but rest in peace Charles Hallahan. The actor who played Paul died of a heart attack while driving only 9 months after the release of this movie. So happy you guys enjoyed this as much as you did. As I said, my favorite movie of all time. It's funny you mention watching this over and over, because I did as a kid. My dad, to this day, says he's ok never seeing it again because I drove him crazy with it. If you need another, similar, disaster movie, I recommend Volcano. I don't think it's as good as this, and the science is a lot more hollywood-y, but it's still a very enjoyable one that came out at the same time starring Tommy Lee Jones. Thank you guys so much for watching this, as almost nobody does and I'm so glad it got some great attention from great people.

Dante's Peak is hands down the best volcano movie ever made. Both in terms of story and realism. Pretty much everything you see in the movie is relatively accurate though I can't speak to the accuracy of the timing of the various events. Geothermal energy powers hot springs, so the magma rising upwards would increase the hot springs temp. The gases that are leaking out are deadly and can cause volcanic crater lakes to turn acidic. The pyro flow at the end there is absolutely insanely destructive. If I recall properly, a flow reaches speeds of 600-700 MPH on average though those numbers may have been in KPH, can't recall. It also is incredibly hot and will kill you in moments. Quite literally the heat will cause your brain to boil in your skull. Horrible way to go, though as a small mercy, it's reasonably quick. Watch some documentaries on Pompeii when you have the time. The destruction and deadly nature of it is quite fascinating if you have an interest in earth science.

My dad and I were on Mt St Helens when the groundwater and glaciers finally boiled and there was a huge steam explosion and eruption. We had found a way inside the Red Zone on logging trails and through clear-cuts where we had a good view. Every Sunday we would drive up there and my dad would set up his tripod and put his camera on automatic and we would sit around listening to music wearing dust masks for the ash that had already come down so close. He was making a few bucks on the side selling stock images to the local paper, trying to justify his camera rig. This was a Thursday and I had In-Service from school, and my dad was free, too. We had been watching steam plumes turn into fluffy clouds for weeks, but then a plume just kept going. You could feel something in the ground, a low rumble like a buzzing, just below the threshold for noise. You could feel it in your feet and teeth. And that plume just kept getting bigger and bigger. I remember thinking I hadn't really grasped how high 'Up' went before that. We got out of there and it was pitch dark at 3pm, before we got to Cougar, Washington, and we were stuck in evacuation traffic, cars choked out from the ash, people panicked and honking and making bad decisions. It was a good jam for a while. My dad was white knuckling it and trying not to sweat or show me that he was afraid. But I didn't really care, as I was a fatalistic teenager at the time. It was interesting, but I couldn't be bothered to worry.
