Dante Training: Using Dante to turn your Laptop Into A Mixer 

Yes, The Yamaha TIO 1608 is great. I'm planning to purchase two more for my church and my production trailer.

This works with any Dante stagebox - Yamaha, Tascam, Alleh&Heath, whatever... First Yamaha Rio should work because it's still Dante, so since like 2009 or longer... but it costs. Stagebox cost a lot of money and PCIe card costs also a lot of money. You can use Dante Virtual Soundcard which costs like $60, but it has too much latency for realtime monitoring so for mixing you would want PCIe card which has Ethernet input for Dante audio but is visible as regular sound card in software. Another problem with this solution is preamp control. Dante protocol specifies only how audio travels through the network. But all preamp configuration (gain, +48V, sometimes even analog Lowcut directly on preamp) is all propietary and you can't control Yamaha stageboxes from Alleh&Heath or any other console - works only with Yamaha, so you need Yamaha remote control software on your computer to setup gains/phantom power. That might not be much issue in studio (as many other audio interfaces has such software), but for live applications sitting with tablet and Yamaha app opened just to setup gains on gig is totally terrible user experience.

That’s only the mixer. What if you have other speakers, laptop, headphones amps, etc. Dante allows you to send or receive to multiple devices. The method you mention is limited and one dimensional. It works as you mentioned but eventually you may want to expand and do more than that configuration allows. With Dante you are future proof and way more flexible

Sorry I’m just seeing this. I’m not sure. I’d need more info but not sure what a Xfa te is. If you have a Behringer X32 set is as the clock master with internal sync. If you have other devices that are connected to it, connect them together and slave other devices to the Behringer. How they connect and sync depends on the device but if I have more info I can guide you further

No I haven’t but auto tune will not effect anything. Auto tune will be applied before the signal gets to the Dante network. I don’t use auto tune in Ableton .

Only Dante enables devices allows you to connect all channels thru the network.

If you have a computer, Dante Virtual Sound card, and the Yamaha Tio, you don’t need a mixer. The mixer adds the value of zero latency Eq, Compression, etc The computer in theory, depending on software, will yield better eq, compression, etc. Only latency gets added more you use . I do it both ways. Each way has its value

So you don’t understand how stage boxes work. The stage like a mixer has inputs. The difference is the stage box sends the information back to the mixer via cat5e or Cat6. The mixer can’t do that. At best the mixer can only be used on the stage as a true mixer with the output of the mixer connected to Dante Dongles. This will put the Mixer on the Dante Network. If you try to buy a bunch of Dante dongles it become and expensive imitation of a stage box

Budget friendly is way to subjective to give an answer. We need to figure out what you’re trying to accomplish. I’m a Mac user so I recommend Macs

Easy!!! Yamaha software called R Remote. All controls are there.

Yamaha has software called “Remote”. It interferes with the Yamaha TIO1608. You can enable phantom power (+48), HPF and mic gain from that software remotely. If you use a non Yamaha mixer you can still control those features remotely via that software and still send the audio information via Dante. Dante and Remote then become two different solutions working together as a team. Hope you understand

@@PreachAndPlay I got it. I didn't know the remote app functionality. I am using on my church tio1608+TF3+dante to feed the DAW which we use to generate an independent mix to the live sound video stream. Vmix get the sound from the dante network. Its a great solution.

I would use Dante to get my audio in and out of a Computer. At that point yes. The only question is how are you getting audio into computer from the Midas. Dante? Audio interfaces? A Midas feature that outputs directly to a computer? Does your Daw accept 64 simultaneous inputs?

@@PreachAndPlay I'm pretty sure this follows under the same stuff that I am trying to figure out... Like will dante allow a computer to interface with other computers with their own USB interfaces? Also, I found out about something last night called "Dante Via" and the somebody said that "Via" has to be on one of the systems to set the clock between "Virtual Soundcards". Please clarify. BTW: To be clear, I truly appreciate your taking the time to clarify these things. I hope that nothing I am saying is coming across as though i'm arguing or anything. I am asking a lot of questions because i'm trying to understand and figure it out. And, it's a lot... LOL

Hey Alex. I’m using many switches because my setup is interconnected between my entire operation. I have all netgear switches. I’ll give you model numbers once I get back. The important thing to remember is get a “managed switch”. Also, it good to get the extra feature of “POE”. (Power over Ethernet) If you use Dante Dongles, etc they will require power. If you have a switch the you can just get a power “wetter” for each device that needs power but getting POE is one thing I regret not doing. I recommend getting a Managed Switch with POE on a couple of ports. Trust me it’s worth it.

Yes. Dante is not proprietary. Yamaha shows up in Dante controller. Yamaha does too. You make the connections in there and Bam! Magic. I’ll do another video if you need.

@@PreachAndPlay yeah I’ll be grateful. We have a Studiolive 32 but the product was discontinued this year as well as their 32 channel stagebox. They’re selling 16 channels which are so expensive we can’t buy 2. I’ve been looking into other branded stageboxes but kept discovering that that protocols were different..

Also, I’ve done productions that have Behringer x32 mixers and Yamaha Tio1608 and Yamaha Rio. If your mixer is dante enabled then you can use a dante enabled stagebox. Period! Goodluck

Bro! The Tios are $1099 for 16 in and 8 out. They can be tricky getting setup “if” you try to use static ip. But worth it

@@sekritskworl-sekrit_studios did you watch the video? I have another video I want you to watch. Long story short, the Presonus Studio Live Ai is Dante capable via the option $500 expansion card. I use it daily and it works great. However, if you don’t already have this mixer, I would not recommend buying it over many other options. There’s only one advantage this mixer has. Only one!
