I can never not think of Aaron doing his Sean Connery impression(Beer and Board Games Season 2 I think?) when I think of this movie. He really did try and he deserved that point.
Man, I used to watch this movie all the time at my grandparents house. My grandmother had a lot of the old classics taped for me and ,aside from old Gumby episodes, Darby was my favorite. The banshee terrified me but also ignited my love for all things horror at a young age. So cool to see it on your show!
This was such a good EP, Matt! The movie and guest (yay, Tony!) combo was so joyful and entertaining! Thank you for your continued hard work! Looking forward to unboxing 🤗
Matt n Tony go together like cornbeef n cabbage Make it Happen Already! The parade of Basement debutants is over Best duo since Itchy n Scratchy. At least gimme Tony Tuedays ..!
This movie was one of the most mystical old school feeling parts of my childhood. Getting to catch this on vhs was wonderful as a Gen z kid. Had that special window of time as a child where I witnessed a wide array of, I guess, "cinematic presentations" like vhs, DVD and now streaming where I have a better appreciation of cinema. This is one of those films that made me admire older cinema and not look down on it as lame.
Corridor Crew did a breakdown on the special fx of the hall of the leprechaun king in this movie; really spectacular work. Also: the church bell is a macguffin!
Craig would have pointed that out, for sure! (And then Matt would have countered with another wrong example. "Oh!! Like the Death Star in Star Wars!" 🤦♂️)
Despite having been raised on Disney I didn't see Darby until I was much older. Initially I enjoyed it more in that "it's so bad it's good" kind of way ie: its dated effects, overt almost parodic Irishness, and the jarring novelty of seeing James Bond sing in a Disney film. Over time though I appreciate this film more and more. I think "Darby O'Gill" walked so Peter Jackson's LotR trilogy could charge into battle. As much as love the Leprechaun films, Darby is my go-to St Patrick's Day film.
Sean Connery was 29 when he made this movie. He was also only 32 in Dr No...he looked about 10 years older than he was even when he had a full head of hair!
On the issue of the bad edit staying in re: "It Happened One Night": it absolutely is an issue of historical preservation. That's part of the principles of preservation: there is no editing what's there or adding new material that didn't previously exist. The most conservators can do is clean up damage that can be dealt with by altering as little of the actual image as possible. If there were a desire to re-edit in the future, that's possible due to the new master existing. But that version would probably have to say somewhere that it's not the original cut.
I didn't figure that out about myself until I was nearly 40... It hit me like a ton o' bricks and was Earth shattering! Look back on ways I acted in the past and couldn't fathom thinking it was okay to be like that. 🤷♂🤦♂️
It was funny how Matt pointed out that he got used to it, but failed to note that he was a half hour in before that happened. That's a lot of dialogue to miss!
I was admiring the Michael Shannon portrait behind Matt, it's been a while since we've seen a movie with our favourite Basement Hall of Famer! Matt, have you seen Take Shelter? One of his lesser known roles, but it sticks with me to this day!
Among movies with at least one leprechaun, you might fare better with _Finian's Rainbow_ which was Fred Astaire's last musical and directed by *Francis Ford Coppola* .
This is so strange. I had the VHS of this, way back in the day when I was a child. If you would caught me 30 minutes ago there was nothing that I could have told you about the movie, aside from Sean Connery playing Darby. This I was certain of. I can almost remember the cover of the VHS, how it was nearly solid black but there was Sean Connery's face coming out of the shadows. Of course the timeline doesn't match up. Of course it's not Sean Connery. But for some reason up until the very moment that I hit play on this video I was convinced Sean Connery played Darby O'Gill.
3:25 that's crazy cause just as I turned off the light next to me you said this. For a moment I thought you were a witch but to my relief it was just a happy coincidence. Whew!
This takes me back, Banshees scared the shite out of me as a kid (my grandfather claimed to be chased by one once). The drink Poitín is technically still illegal but there are commercial brands that sell spirits under the name, it is essentially moonshine made with potato skins.
I've always wondered why people have chosen (historically) to make a point of noting which grain or fruit or sugary whatever they started with to make their "moonshine"... Considering that it all just ends up tasting similarly awful, lol. But people will note if they used corn or potato skins or whatever. 🤷♂️
Tony: You're a good dude and a talented bloke - Having watched you in BABG over the years I'm kinda taken aback: You gotta focus on getting your health on track. 👌
