D'arcy got Lizzie's message loud & clear that afternoon at the parsonage and then went to work - and her tour of the living arrangements at Pemberley didn't hurt matters either. After that, his having ruined all hope of her sister's happiness seemed to, all of a sudden, become a very secondary concern.

Not having in tow those 2 shrews also helped. In a familiar environment, relaxed after a swim, not in danger of being laughed at, and above all in shock of Lizzy being there, Darcy for once followed his heart.

It's a fabulous novel and a truly wonderful dramatisation. So well acted, directed, produced - everything. I had Pride and Prejudice as a set text for a course I once did. I struggled to get into it, almost wrote it off as a 'women's novel'. Someone suggested I get the video tape of this series. Oh my! It brought the whole thing to marvellous life. The drama, the romance all so profound and so very funny in places - Mr Collins! - then I was able to go back and get into the novel. You're not supposed to do it that way. The novel, the text, should be paramount, and you maybe watch an adaptation and think, well, it's not bad but it leaves out and this and that. But not with this one. As someone said, Jane Austen would surely have approved.

@@martm216 Since you have read the novel, and I haven't; perhaps you can shed some light on a particular character in the story. It's about Col. Fitzwilliam. I've always been puzzled about his character, especially his friendship to Lizzy. I never understood why he divulged to Lizzy, Darcy's interference with Bingley and Jane, and him having saved Bingley from marrying Jane. How could he not know who Jane was, and why share that news with Lizzy, knowing it would hurt her, unless he wanted to get back at Darcy? Was there anything in the novel indicating a certain rivalry between Col. Fitzwilliam and Mr. Darcy. I often wondered if Col. Fitzwilliam had a secret thing for Lizzy. I remember how he interacted with Lizzy at the Collins home, with Darcy right there. I also remember the wedding scene, and Col. Fitzwilliam did not look happy (well none of them did except the brides and grooms 😂), but there was a quick glance where Col. Fitzwilliam is looking in the direction of Darcy and Lizzy, and the look was an unpleasant look, and not one of happiness for their union. He always showed a fond affection for Lizzy, and appeared to get along very well with his cousin. You would think he would be very happy for them. Am I missing something? Col. Fitzwilliam had no other love interest, but he did give me the impression that he held a slight affection for Lizzy. Perhaps he knew that Darcy was betrothed to Lady Catherine's daughter, but surely he could see there was a chemistry between Darcy and Lizzie. I'm puzzled exceedingly by the Colonel. Please help me to understand this character. I would be immensely grateful. 💛
@martm216
@martm216 3 года назад
@@linda_smilesrfree2744 hello - I will have a look at the novel re Col.Fitzwilliam. I cannot remember any mention of rivalry between him and Darcy for Lizzy's hand. As for his disapproving look at the wedding, I will have to look at that as well. Maybe, as you say, as they were all looking solemn (save for the two happy couples), that was the wedding etiquette in those days, and Col Fitzwilliam still in sober mood happened to be the one caught looking at Darcy and Elizabeth? Perhaps the look came over as disapproving when it was merely meant to be serious? The colonel and Darcy were clearly great friends, so I doubt if there was any animus between them over Lizzy. The BBC dramatisation is so good, and the novel is well worth reading. I will try to get back to you on this.

Mr. Darcy wins the "Fastest Outfit Change" Award here. I can imagine he must have raced upstairs at blinding speed, with all the servants looking after him, like, "What on earth???" And as he reaches his chambers he's stripping off his wet clothes, urging his valet to bring him whatever is at hand. "But m'lord, those trousers don't go with that coat--" "I don't care, just give them to me!"

Yes, I did wonder whether Darcy's quick change routine, a lightening fast change as you suggest, might have been a little weak spot in this otherwise quite brilliant adaptation. Lizzie and the Gardiners had only to walk across the turf to the front of the house, which Lizzie was doing at speed. But someone pointed out that maybe their carriage had to be fetched? Perhaps it had been parked round the back somewhere rather than at the front? Otherwise Darcy would scarcely have had time to get out of his wet clobber, dry off and dress up?

The portrayal of Mr. Darcy is where the TV series stands head and shoulders above the film. In the film, Darcy remains cold and impersonal throughout the whole thing, and it's never quite clear why. Colin Firth's portrayal is much more faithful. In this scenes, for instance, it's clear that, after the first proposal, he decided to make a concerted effort to correct all the faults than Elizabeth saw in him.
@eme.261
@eme.261 6 лет назад
The series had far more time, which allowed Colin to give a much more nuanced performance. Matthew's performance was more palpable, though, and he did far more with the few scenes he had to work with. The changes to Darcy's outward character were very evident, if you were looking for them, instead of waiting for nuances from Colin's performance to permeate Matthew's. I love both adaptations, equally. They are uniquely gorgeous pieces of cinema.

I believe the film attempted to capture a slightly more relatable transformation. Where to Darcy is adjusting to being transformed himself, so the thoughts of his actions are genuine but the delivery is not as natural or comfortable for him, it being new territory compared to how he usually behaved with acquaintances. I preferred the film in that way, as it felt more authentic and intriguing
@anyili3196
@anyili3196 4 года назад
No I would argue that in the movie Darcy did transform. He immediately went to the hotel the Gardners and Elizabeth lived in and personally invited the Gardners to Pemberly after he and Elizabeth ran into each other at Pemberley and he introduced Georgiana to Elizabeth. The Gardners very clearly commended his politeness. At Pemberly, he also invited Mr. Gardner to fishing. And the transformation from a cold iron face of what he had before his rejection by Lizzy and the gentle, smiling face afterwards was very obvious. It’s just the fact that the movie was only a third of the show’s length that Darcy’s transformation seemed likely to be unnoticed. But if you take into proportion it was a very good amount of time.
@jazshas

Darcy's transformation wasn't as meaningful in the 2005 film. His Pride didn't come through; the portrayal was more like introverted shyness.

i don't like thinking of it as a 'transformation' per se, rather he acts amiably when he is in his comfort zone, and becomes more reserved/ arrogant-looking when he out of it. I don't like thinking Elizabeth 'transformed' him, I don't like it when people change themselves for someone else's sake
@AnnaMarianne
@AnnaMarianne 6 лет назад
He didn't change himself for the sake of others, as much as that his conversations with Elizabeth made him realize that he didn't have the same effect on people as he had though he had. Darcy didn't think of himself as "selfishly uncaring of the feelings of others", he thought he was being quite the gentleman. Sometimes, oftentimes, our behavior and our words just seem different to ourselves and to the rest of the world. We may not understand, how our actions impact others. Darcy did want to be a gentleman, and a good, respectable man. Elizabeth's commentary on his apparent failure to express his true inner self to the outside world made him try harder. In essence, Darcy doesn't change. He has always been a great person. But during the story, he learns to open up and let this inner self show, and not be a private secret of his friends no more.

OpaleyedWolf Absolutely. Darcy was always a nice guy with a tough exterior and just that he can't feel easy during the first interaction with people. That behavior is often considered as pride. In this novel, it is all from Elizabeth's eyes we see. She misunderstood him, though his very first remark was somewhat rude. However as she interacts more her prejudice that Darcy was proud slowly wears down and she realizes her admiration for Darcy. As to Darcy, except the first interaction, he knew that he is getting attracted towards Elizabeth. I don't know how many times i read this novel and watched this BBC series. Every time it has the same impact. And Colin Firth, wow he took up a character from a female oriented story and made is male centric. Ofcourse, i am pointing to the wet shirt scene.

I think that what Darcy is getting at is that Lizzy has not forgiven him for "barely tolerable description" of her; nor has she forgiven him of mess that he made of Jane's love life. At this juncture, I think that Lizzy has received Darcy's letter of explanation of his relationship with Wickham and why he talked Bingley out of marrying Jane. He has already made one proposal of marriage to her that she rejected. Lizzy is perplexed about her feelings toward Darcy. Her tour of the home did not help her. The irony --- Darcy is attempting to marry into the same family that he dissuaded Bingley out of joining.

The idle rich gentry were about to be supplanted by meritocracy and industrialisation in England. The novel passes social commentary on the class system yet retain ambivalence as the author appreciates and records the polite and restrained social conventions and rituals of the landed gentry while condemning arrogance towards those deemed socially inferior. Given their constrained lives and fear of losing their reputation and social standing the characters appeared rigid, hysterical and superficial as they struggled to appear polite and obey rules of etiquette. The fact that Darcy and Elizabeth become confidantes reveals their desire to be intimate and real with someone instead of keeping up conventions.

Colossians Chapter 3 1If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. 2Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth. 3For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God. 4When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory. 5Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry: 6For which things' sake the wrath of God cometh on the children of disobedience: 7In the which ye also walked some time, when ye lived in them. 8But now ye also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth. 9Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds; 10And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him: 11Where there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcision nor uncircumcision, Barbarian, Scythian, bond nor free: but Christ is all, and in all. 12Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering; 13Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye. 14And above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness. 15And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful. 16Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. 17And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him. 18Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as it is fit in the Lord. 19Husbands, love your wives, and be not bitter against them. 20Children, obey your parents in all things: for this is well pleasing unto the Lord. 21Fathers, provoke not your children to anger, lest they be discouraged. 22Servants, obey in all things your masters according to the flesh; not with eyeservice, as menpleasers; but in singleness of heart, fearing God: 23And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men; 24Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ. 25But he that doeth wrong shall receive for the wrong which he hath done: and there is no respect of persons.

I believe Mr Darcy is typically narcissist. So charming like they used to be

@Jonathan ParksI had the same reaction. Wickham is the narcissist, with the superficial charm and the reflexive lying. Darcy came up "in pride and conceit" -- as he described himself -- but he learned a lesson and grew as a person when he was humbled. Narcissists don't learn humility.

Colossians Chapter 2 1For I would that ye knew what great conflict I have for you, and for them at Laodicea, and for as many as have not seen my face in the flesh; 2That their hearts might be comforted, being knit together in love, and unto all riches of the full assurance of understanding, to the acknowledgement of the mystery of God, and of the Father, and of Christ; 3In whom are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. 4And this I say, lest any man should beguile you with enticing words. 5For though I be absent in the flesh, yet am I with you in the spirit, joying and beholding your order, and the stedfastness of your faith in Christ. 6As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him: 7Rooted and built up in him, and stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving. 8Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ. 9For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily. 10And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power: 11In whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ: 12Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead. 13And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses; 14Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross; 15And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it. 16Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days: 17Which are a shadow of things to come; but the body is of Christ. 18Let no man beguile you of your reward in a voluntary humility and worshipping of angels, intruding into those things which he hath not seen, vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind, 19And not holding the Head, from which all the body by joints and bands having nourishment ministered, and knit together, increaseth with the increase of God. 20Wherefore if ye be dead with Christ from the rudiments of the world, why, as though living in the world, are ye subject to ordinances, 21(Touch not; taste not; handle not; 22Which all are to perish with the using;) after the commandments and doctrines of men? 23Which things have indeed a shew of wisdom in will worship, and humility, and neglecting of the body; not in any honour to the satisfying of the flesh.

Colossians Chapter 1 1Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, and Timotheus our brother, 2To the saints and faithful brethren in Christ which are at Colosse: Grace be unto you, and peace, from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. 3We give thanks to God and the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, praying always for you, 4Since we heard of your faith in Christ Jesus, and of the love which ye have to all the saints, 5For the hope which is laid up for you in heaven, whereof ye heard before in the word of the truth of the gospel; 6Which is come unto you, as it is in all the world; and bringeth forth fruit, as it doth also in you, since the day ye heard of it, and knew the grace of God in truth: 7As ye also learned of Epaphras our dear fellowservant, who is for you a faithful minister of Christ; 8Who also declared unto us your love in the Spirit. 9For this cause we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to desire that ye might be filled with the knowledge of his will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding; 10That ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God; 11Strengthened with all might, according to his glorious power, unto all patience and longsuffering with joyfulness; 12Giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light: 13Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son: 14In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins: 15Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature: 16For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: 17And he is before all things, and by him all things consist. 18And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence. 19For it pleased the Father that in him should all fulness dwell; 20And, having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself; by him, I say, whether they be things in earth, or things in heaven. 21And you, that were sometime alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now hath he reconciled 22In the body of his flesh through death, to present you holy and unblameable and unreproveable in his sight: 23If ye continue in the faith grounded and settled, and be not moved away from the hope of the gospel, which ye have heard, and which was preached to every creature which is under heaven; whereof I Paul am made a minister; 24Who now rejoice in my sufferings for you, and fill up that which is behind of the afflictions of Christ in my flesh for his body's sake, which is the church: 25Whereof I am made a minister, according to the dispensation of God which is given to me for you, to fulfil the word of God; 26Even the mystery which hath been hid from ages and from generations, but now is made manifest to his saints: 27To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory: 28Whom we preach, warning every man, and teaching every man in all wisdom; that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus: 29Whereunto I also labour, striving according to his working, which worketh in me mightily.

Colossians Chapter 4 1Masters, give unto your servants that which is just and equal; knowing that ye also have a Master in heaven. 2Continue in prayer, and watch in the same with thanksgiving; 3Withal praying also for us, that God would open unto us a door of utterance, to speak the mystery of Christ, for which I am also in bonds: 4That I may make it manifest, as I ought to speak. 5Walk in wisdom toward them that are without, redeeming the time. 6Let your speech be alway with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man. 7All my state shall Tychicus declare unto you, who is a beloved brother, and a faithful minister and fellowservant in the Lord: 8Whom I have sent unto you for the same purpose, that he might know your estate, and comfort your hearts; 9With Onesimus, a faithful and beloved brother, who is one of you. They shall make known unto you all things which are done here. 10Aristarchus my fellowprisoner saluteth you, and Marcus, sister's son to Barnabas, (touching whom ye received commandments: if he come unto you, receive him;) 11And Jesus, which is called Justus, who are of the circumcision. These only are my fellowworkers unto the kingdom of God, which have been a comfort unto me. 12Epaphras, who is one of you, a servant of Christ, saluteth you, always labouring fervently for you in prayers, that ye may stand perfect and complete in all the will of God. 13For I bear him record, that he hath a great zeal for you, and them that are in Laodicea, and them in Hierapolis. 14Luke, the beloved physician, and Demas, greet you. 15Salute the brethren which are in Laodicea, and Nymphas, and the church which is in his house. 16And when this epistle is read among you, cause that it be read also in the church of the Laodiceans; and that ye likewise read the epistle from Laodicea. 17And say to Archippus, Take heed to the ministry which thou hast received in the Lord, that thou fulfil it. 18The salutation by the hand of me Paul. Remember my bonds. Grace be with you. Amen. (Written from Rome to Colossians by Tychicus and Onesimus.)
