i think Lantom is the type of person every priest or preacher should strive to be, honestly. imagine a religion full of people who not only are this thoughtful, but are willing to treat others with the respect it takes to have an honest conversation with. Lantom isn't even trying to get Matthew to believe something here; he's trying to impart wisdom.
This show would not work or be do e by Marvel Dosney today...it was a different creative team working on it. We won't have getbthis level of deep character insight in the new series. 😢

The way I want m church is almost exactly the way this scene depicts it. Probably the best portrayal of a catholic clergy we’ll ever see in mainstream media. Netflix did a great job with Daredevil. I’m scared to see how he’ll be dumbed down in the Disney version.

I'm pleasantly surprised how respectful this show was to Matt's religion. I'm so used to Christianity and Christian characters treated as jokes or hypocrites mainstream shows and movies. This was a breath of fresh air to see a character take his faith seriously and weigh his actions against from that perspective.
@@jaredf.6532 He has a point. Disney's version probably is going to remove Matt's religion from the show and not reference it all. The show won't have deep moments like this. Disney's Daredevil will probably be full of MCU humor, not be taken seriously and toned down with its PG-13 rating.
And my-my does it work like a fucking charm… He even has me, a person who I’d consider to be pretty firm in their faith, questioning everything from time to time
Im not someone religious, but this kind of scenes are great. It doesnt feel like it's trying to convince you to be catholic or christian or anything, it's just using religion to explore a part of the spectrum that composes humanity, and it feels genuine, deep and interesting regardless of your beliefs. Gosh this show is amazing and this is only of the reasons why
Matt: so you don’t believe he exists. Father: am I done talking? I love that delivery! The quickness he said that, the deadpan serious expression in how he said it. Even blind, Matt knees he fucked up. He’s like “shit sorry father”
Flawless delivery on both parts. Conversation felt absolutely real from the timing to the exchanges. Music cued in at the perfect time. Man this show was so well crafted. This show really detailed man's struggle for purpose, redemption, and justice.
Because the devil is walking among us to tear us down to his level. Have you been tempted to do the wrong things in life??? That is the devil working! Come to God and He will save you. God is working harder!!!
As an atheist, I love how this show portrayed both faith and those who hold it. They weren't demonized, they weren't held up as absolute paragons. They were shown to be good people, trying their best to be the best that they could. I find that this form of writing is so hard to find in fiction not just these days, but for decades past as well. In DD, faith is core to his character, it informs so many of his actions, and that the show went to great lengths to portray that in character is fantastic. It's also one of the reasons I love Captain America's little quip in Avengers just before he jumps out the helicarrier. Each moment shows significant parts of their character without insulting them for it.
Wilson Fisk will always be the joker to Matt Murdock's Batman. He can't kill him, no matter how many lives that monster corrupts or kills. A lawyer dresses like a devil yet does will do just, while a man who assumes the appearance of a philanthropist and businessman commits heinous acts in the acquisition of power which never ends. He is the embodiment of the kind of evil that Matt has for him to fight against both in the court and in the street. There are given the points where all daredevil has managed to do was to fight king pin to a standstill, and Wilson willingly walking off the board, as he had just done this past year. These two have similar beginnings and yet diverge with regards to the kind of men their fathers were. Jack Murdoch was a boxer with little education and yet loved his son and did what he could to provide for him. With Fisk, his father was an ambitious politician and also a bully who instilled his son every sadistic instinct. He actually taught his son how to be a bully. And that tutelage came back to haunt him when Fisk murdered his father to save his mother from more abuse. But then of course the corruption continues, as he and his mother covered it up. And I highly doubt that his mother did anything to the suede or deprogram her husband's influence on her son because the results speak for themselves. Wilson Fisk is the devil more so than Matt ever will be. There is no redemption for someone like him, before he would have to have genuine remorse and he has none. He justifies every heinous act he takes. The villain is always the hero of their own story. And the series did a fantastic job in portraying that version of the kingpin.
The ending in this clip is damn good! "What if you could've stopped him?" Matt asks, as if stopping that commander from murdering Gahiji and his family would've changed much... The question shows he didn't understand a damn thing of what Lantom was talking about... He saw that Satan was real, but that he wasn't one single entity, but a "spirit" that comes over otherwise regular humans, like the commander, imbuing them with a capacity for evil that doesn't exist in even the most savage, ruthless, hardened soldiers.
I think there's an unspoken part of the question: "What if you could have stopped him?" "Stopped him how?" (By becoming like him) Matt's actions weigh heavily on him, and the theme of him becoming " The Devil" are all throughout the series.
@@chitwn9891 oh fukc off with this BS. The only reason you can believe that killing a killer makes you as bad as the killer if you think every life has teh same value, if you genuinely think a newborn baby's live is worth the same as hitler's.
I'm not sure I agree with your conclusion. If stopping the commander wouldn't have mattered then stopping criminals wouldn't matter and Matt wouldn't be a vigilante. I think you're misssing an important point, "Maybe that's what the Devil is, a symbol to be feared." The point wasn't 'the devil can influence anyone so don't bother stopping anyone' the point (that Matt took anyway) was to become the 'Devil', the symbol to be feared, to all these ruthless criminals. The same way the Father says the Devil drives people to church, Matt hopes to drive people away from crime, lest the (dare)Devil come for them. I don't think Father Lantom would be against stopping the commander, he's only wary of who Matt might become in doing such things.
This was matt searching for a excuse to NOT kill fisk though he wants to do it with his entire soul. Thats the conflict of humans.trying to stay good when bad things is what we desire
The challenge is that the right thing to do is the harder path to walk. I’m interested in religion while remaining an atheist (catholic atheist) but I suspect if I’m wrong then humans are composed of both the divine and the evil, the Jekyll and Hyde, Batman and the joker. Matt and Fisk. Order and chaos. Earth is the board, Human beings are the game pieces where god and satan play out their eternal contest. There’s not good humans and evil humans……every human is good and evil Or maybe it’s better to say humans are good vs evil.
He studies Catholic religion to better understand the battle between good and evil. There are tons of parables and metaphors in the bible that could be used to better understand good and evil. The Bible makes clear distinction between them. He separates knowledge from Faith in the Catholic entity God.
Dostoevsky's influence is clearly visible throughout the show, adding to its allure. It skillfully weaves in his thematic elements, such as the portrayal of human suffering, in-depth theological discussions, existential angst, and the exploration of evil. Matt's character, in particular, seems to draw inspiration from Alyosha in "The Brothers Karamazov," mirroring his complexity and depth.
Believe it or not, but I once met a man - I believe he was a journalist - who was in the exact same place at the exact same time as Father Lantom. He told us his experience of Rwanda genocide, and as he was going deeper and deeper into how truely horrific it was, not only physically but humanly speaking (people from the same village, community, neighbourhood, church, even family denouncing each others to the militia who then slaughtered them all with machetes and guns), he burst into tears. I was so moved that I couldn't help but taking him in my arms. If the Devil didn't inspire all these people who had lived and shared so much together to betray each others and give up on their very souls, I don't know who did.
Not a who- a what. Fear. Fear of the unknown, fear of death... it drives people to convince themselves of terrible things. When we dehumanize our enemies we become monsters. No devils required. Just broken, bitter humans.
And there lies the real reason we believe in devils. We invent malevolent inhuman beasts that influence us. Blame our own actions as his influence to shirk responsibility. Blame the most monstrous, unimaginable violations of others on him so we don't have to see ourselves in the faces of the perpetrators. We paint portraits of devils to avoid looking at ourselves in the mirror, and seeing what we really are.
@@Plasticninja_ Actually you are wrong. While people are and can be malevolent, there are those beings out there that are true manifestations of evil in the world. Yes, you cannot blame every act on such spirits, as we are human and are capable of doing horrific things without prompting. However, do not underestimate the spiritual evil that pollutes the lands of the earth.
Matt: What if you could have stopped him......from ever hurting anyone again? Father Lantom: Stopped him how? I love this exchange and the fact that Matt has no answer. It's stuff like this that made Netflix's Daredevil so great.
I dont understand why matthes character refuses to answer this question. Matt doesnt want to kill, so he will not mention shooting teh general. But he himself is bordering on supernatural. Why could he not come up with a gazillion supernatural phenomenons that could have saved Gahiji
@@varric I mean...Mephisto is basically the devil in the Marvel universe....or a variation of him since Wolverine literally fights the actual devil in one of his comics.
If Born Again does follow the Netflix DD continuity then I hope we get a new Priest for Matt to talk with since in that continuity Fr. Lantom is dead. Maybe even a younger one.

Disney's blind, money hungry agenda will never allow them to reach this level of depth. It will be a tragedy felt by many. I'm hoping to be wrong, but if I'm right this would at least make a great metaphor for the death of art at the hands of greed.

Netflix's Daredevil is one of the best comic book adaptations of any character. It's very grounded, thoughtful in the question of can a lawyer truly be viglante and still call himself a hero? And all the characters are great.
It is incredible It has Catholic undertones but feels natural It is there but it is not preachy, Daredevil doesn't fully live by Catholisicm but his morals are strongly rooted in it and it is only a theme The Villians are amazing, brilliant character depth and really good backstory Only the end of season 2 was amazing Every other part was brilliant Literally this show is gold
Season 1 and 3 are spectacular, some of the best superhero shows ever done. First half of season 2 as well. I can't say the same for the second half tho. It almost made me drop the show altogether and lose the incredible experience of season 3. And even on its "bad" parts (bad imo, I've heard people who like it just as much as the rest of the show), it's better than a lot of other comic book adaptations
Okay, maybe I'm high, but this scene is not only incredible, but it actually has a lot to say about Matt's character and the struggle he's dealing with. See, when I first saw this scene, I assumed it was about the devil proper, and evil as it related to Fisk and what Matt is fighting against. Like, Matt is trying to understand evil and how to combat it properly. He struggles with violence and his love of it. Like the Father says later in the show, he's looking for a reason NOT to kill Fisk. But it's also about the devil inside Matt specifically. That part of him that wants to hurt bad people, make them pay, even kill them for what they've done. That part of him is no different than the militia commander in the Father's story. Part of Matt would do the same thing to someone who's hurt and killed so many people. Part of Matt would commit evil to satisfy his urge for justice...and likely damn himself in the process. Matt is RELATING to the commander in the story, and realizing he can't do what the commander did, not even to people like Fisk.
I don’t mean to force Jesus or religion on you, but give Him a shot. He’s real, and really does love and care for you. Do with this message as you want. Thanks for reading.
I'm muslim. And the way they handled catholicism in this show is fantastic. It lines up with a lot of things in Islam too. So it's relatable for Muslims, Christians
Love that this show used Matts religion to relate to the story and other characters. It’s something I believe Disney will stay far away from, probably one little joke about him being Catholic.
@@kennethlau8990 Yeah, that's just for diversity points. Woke people kinda hate Christianity cus it is often associated with western values, so they probably won't bring up his religion unless it is to criticize every part of it
@@arcanewarrior863 Is there proof that "woke" people hate Christianity? The definition of Woke: Anyone who is aware of injustice to society. MLK was woke, and he was a Christian pastor. Plus, Disney wouldn't dare attack a religion.
To be honest, I like Daredevil's reason for the No-Kill Rule much, much better than Batman's. I say this as an atheist because one of the characters refuses to kill out of hope of redemption and judgement, while the other refuses out of a refusal to turn into those he swears to stop, but still refuses to acknowledge that some men deserve death (Joker, for example) if only to stop the havoc the spread.
That's really only part of the reason Batman doesn't kill. The Bigger and more important reason is he knows if he kills even one of his Villains, he'll never stop. Earth 51 is a perfect example. On that Earth, when Joker killed Jason, Batman killed him in response. However, it didn't stop with The Joker. He killed all of his Villains and then moved onto other Heroes Villains. And this happens throughout DC's Multiverse. Whenever Batman kills, he does not stop.
@@FinalGreymon Batman is just as crazy as other villains of the universe. Killing the villains would be pretty much the solution to the problem. But he doesn't want to actually solve it, as it would eliminate the purpose of his life. So he is perfectly comfortable to allow his enemies to break free again and again, causing chaos and suffering of innocents. And what makes it even better is that he is also oftentimes the main motivation for those villains: they wreak havoc specifically to attract him.
@@voidseeker4394 Tell me you don't read comics without actually telling me. Killing them wouldn't solve anything anyway. Do you have any idea how many times Joker has come back to life?
"The one place in which Gods and Demons inarguably exist is in the human mind, where they are real in all their grandeur and monstrosity." - Alan Moore
Good god, this scene is so good. At the start Matt ask Father Lantom if he think that the devil is real and he walk among them. At this point of the show Matt believes himself to be the devil, he said that in multiple times: "Be careful of the Murdock boys. They got the Devil in 'em." "Why did he put the Devil in me?" But when Matt hears Father Lantom description of the devil in human form, he understood that it's not him, but Fisk. Brilliant story telling, Matt is a Saint that dress like a devil and Fisk is a devil that dress like a Saint.
I’m so lucky to have a priest just like this! This is why I love my faith because we understand the importance of having elders who can gives us spiritual advice and just love advice in general
"There were people who called themselves Satanists who made Crowley squirm. It wasn't just the things they did, it was the way they blamed it all on Hell. They'd come up with some stomach-churning idea that no demon could have thought of in a thousand years, some dark and mindless unpleasantness that only a fully-functioning human brain could conceive, then shout "The Devil Made Me Do It" and get the sympathy of the court when the whole point was that the Devil hardly ever made anyone do anything. He didn't have to. That was what some humans found hard to understand. Hell wasn't a major reservoir of evil, any more than Heaven, in Crowley's opinion, was a fountain of goodness; they were just sides in the great cosmic chess game. Where you found the real McCoy, the real grace and the real heart-stopping evil, was right inside the human mind." Good Omens
Daredevil: Do you believe in the devil? Me: Yes, and you do a good job acting as him than just disguising as him when it comes to sparing your enemies.
One of my favorite aspects of this show. The whole arc of Matt Murdock in the comics and especially this show is him struggling to be a good Catholic and not to kill Fisk, which would be they easier route.
Anyone else feels like this scene might have been inspired by Roméo Dallaire's book "Shake Hands With the Devil" which talks about his experience in Rwanda during the genocide.
This is probably my favorite Lanton scene Also, it’s my personal headcanon that Sowande or whatever his name is from Defenders is the person he speaks of here

“Be sober [well balanced and self-disciplined], be alert and cautious at all times. That enemy of yours, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion [fiercely hungry], seeking someone to devour.” 1 Peter 5:8 AMP
There's a god in each person who believes in a god, just as there is a devil in each person who believes there is a devil. These fictional characters are concepts. When a Christian asks themselves "what would Jesus do?" they are calling upon the god inside them, and seeking to be the best they know how to be. When someone admits, "the Devil made me do it," they are calling upon the worst aspects of themselves. That which can be found inside them willing to commit atrocities be it for greed, glory, or even survival. We can also see these aspects in the actions and intentions of others but make no mistake: there is nothing magical or spiritual about this. The war between good & evil rests on your shoulders, and inside your head.
The source of the Devil’s power is drawn by us. But we have and will always have the choice to cut off his supply by bettering ourselves and living above the darkness.
I’m so afraid of daredevil born again, because how can you top these three majestic seasons and with the news that new show will be lighter i’m not sure that that’s something I’m looking forward to watch
He’s not an excuse. He is a great example of how people thinking they can play god and don’t need anything of humility or grace can go so wrong. Satan is similar to most modern people today.
The priest is correct. Satan is just the Hebrew word for adversary. Christianity decided to use the word as a name for Lucifer. The Bible is a translation!
I think it’s implied that he just did it for fun or as some kind of sick display of power. Hence why he’s referred to as having the devil inside of him.
"Stopped him how?" .. wise answer. Not every option should be available to a moral or ethical individual. There have to be limits to prevent us from becoming the next devil.

There's no way Disney's Daredevil Born Again will be on this caliber of quality. I don't think it'll be a bad show at all. I think it will be great, and successful, just in different ways. Less mature, less violent, more connected to the larger consequential narrative. It'll be nice to have that version of Daredevil....and this one as well.
Funniest thing to me is in this multi-verse they're speaking in of Marvel. Yea, the devil does exist, though you're far more likely to meet Mephiston, Black Heart, etc. Shit, moment you meet the Ghost Rider you're lookin at a man combined with an angel gone insane. So yea, the devil exists in the world they're currently having this conversation in, then again so does God as the Presence.
