Daredevil: Is the Ben Affleck Version Underrated?

2003’s Daredevil opened with a lot of hype. The buzz leading up to the film suggested it would be a gritty take on the character that writer-director Mark Steven Johnson promised would live up to some of the more famous runs from the comic, with Joe Quesada’s take from Guardian Devil a particular influence. Yet, fans were wary, especially when Ben Affleck was cast in the lead.
All that said, in the lead-up to the film, word began to leak out that Affleck was actually great in the part, with early reports praising his chemistry with co-star Jennifer Garner, who played Elektra, and who Affleck would later marry. Yet, when the movie came out, many fans were left scratching their heads, with Elektra doing martial arts to Evanescence and Affleck’s weird leather jumpsuit not matching their dark and edgy vision promised.
In the end, the film was slain by critics and fans, with even Affleck himself eventually disowning it. However, it still grossed enough money to lead to an Elektra spin-off for Garner, which would ultimately be considered one of the worst superhero movies ever, and finally, put this franchise out of its misery.
While Daredevil’s R-rated director’s cut has its fans, many agree that the definitive Daredevil remains the Charlie Cox version, who’s on his way back to screens with the Marvel Phase 6 project Daredevil: Born Again recently announced. To celebrate that news, let’s look back at the 2003 Ben Affleck version and see if it's as bad as everyone remembers. This episode of Marvel Revisited is written, narrated and edited by Kier Gomes, and produced by Adam Walton. Do you have a soft spot for Daredevil (2003)? Let us know in the comments!

It's amazing how Daredevil shows you how a black actor got the role of Kingpin not because of diversity. Because the late great Michael Clarke Duncan was a awesome actor who nailed the audition

Totally, the person at Marvel that was incharge at the time, I forget his name, and good riddance, but I remember he made the decision to cut the movie down, and we ended up with the steam pile of the theatrical release. You watch the director's cut of the movie, and its almost a completely different movie. It actually has heart, you love who you love and you hate who you hate. Even the side stories like that of Coolio's character. Just build up the narrative to "Who is Matt Murdoc." To rip it out like they did in the theatrical cut, after seeing the director's cut realize just how much of a gaping whole it leaves.

@@talisredstar1543 My thoughts EXACTLY ! We... as a result... were robbed of a direct sequel to "DAREDEVIL" (2003) ! The director's cut fixed a lot of problems. I'm not saying directors should have their way all the time, but I can't see why studios don't let better edits of the movie come out instead of the theatrical ones which aren't as good. The best version of the movie possible should always come out

Get Affleck a modern 3D body scan & a fabric-plate armor by today's tech & he'd still be a great DD. Ben was willing to suit back up to play Batman (he doesn't get proper kudos for that either). I'd bet he'd be up for it. Not slamming Charlie Cox. HE does a PHENOMENAL job in the series! But he also had an extended period to completely flesh out his take on Hornhead. TV series & movies are (mostly, if one completely buys into the Franchise U approach) different beasts. Episodic storytelling gives one the ability to learn about the role & find new, interesting ways of portraying a role.

For me if you removed the park scene (aka the studio mandated Matrix style fight from every 2000's film), I really have no complaints about the Director's Cut. A few minor issues here and here (Elektra's performance could be better, the rubberman cgi) but imo it's a pretty good origin film. I truely believe if this version was released in cinemas we'd have had an Affleck Daredevil trilogy before hitting 2010.

They don't care about making good films, only pandering and it is and will be their downfall. They're already seeing poor returns on Marvel properties and getting mediocre reviews on new content. I've _always_ felt this was HIGHLY underrated & misunderstood. To this day, I still haven't seen the 'Director's Cut,' though. Is it *really* the _'better'_ version?
@jaspermcminnis5538
@jaspermcminnis5538 2 года назад
Yes. At least from what I remember, because it has been a while. Anyone that watched it will usually tell you it's better than the theatrical cut. I won't spoil too much. The directors cut has scenes with Matt Murdock trying to solve a case which wasn't in the theatrical cut.

@@jaspermcminnis5538 I see. Now that you mention it, I believe I saw bits & pieces of the Director’s Cut a while ago. I’m gonna be tracking it down now.

Lest we forget, that the soundtrack led by Evanescence was the probably the biggest hit of the film. Oh the the days that when a film broke the $100 million sales barrier the considered a hit, seems so antiquated by modern standards now.

John Rhys-Davies was the first live action Kingpin. Rex Smith was the first LA Daredevil. It's called Wikipedia. Use it.

I liked it, I liked Keanu as Constantine too, daredevil and hellblazer were always my favourite comics and liked the movie adaptions, although the series' of those properties have since been made into shows that I find adapt the comics more narratively and aesthetically in line with source material, I loved both of the series too.

The first live action portrayal of Kingpin was in "The Trial of the Incredible Hulk" (1989), played by John Rhys-Davies.

Both the Blade series and DareDevil really set the standard for superhero films today. Without these early iterations, we would never have had Avengers, so I like to give credit where credit is due. This movie is just fine!

"I'm not the bad guy." Had so much meaning in this movie, what he says to Kingpin at the end of their fight. JoBlo doesn't talk about it but part of the film you see that Daredevil has leaned more to the devil side viciously beating a criminal, only to realize that he was doing this infront of that man's son. Later after that scene Matt is standing in the rain looking down saying. "I'm not the bad Guy." As if trying to remind himself even that he is the hero. But this life has taken its toll on him, and he has to wonder. "Am I the bad guy?" You watch the story through, and it comes back at the end when he decides that he Might Judge and Jury, but he will not be an Executioner anymore. With the last full line to Kingpin. "I'm not the the bad guy. Court's Adjourned." He throws down Kingpin's cane, and to me with a sound reminiscent of a gavel being hammered at the end of Court Proceeding from the Judge.

Vincent D'Onofrio was suprisingly great as Kingpin - my problem with his performance was always his voice however. It wasn't as powerfull as Duncan's voice by a longshot. In fact his voice made him sound week at some moments (yeah, followed by his outburst of rage - so in the end he was more menacing then Duncan, I know). Still, Duncan's performance is more near to the comics for me.

With Donofrio I kind of just pity him and have to pretend he's strong. With Duncan I feared him, and you can just feel his oversized muscles ripping through the screen.

This movie is one of those were you have to accept it's style to like it. It's both cool and silly at the same time, and it works great for me. There's a lot of cool shots throughout the movie and the action is awesome. Something they really understood with the Directors Cut as most, if not all, action scenes are longer and more exciting. The Director's cut has so much more substance aswell, so if you are not watching that, why even bother? I love this movie and it made Daredevil my favorite Super Hero as a kid. Still doesn't compare to the great Netflix series, but it's a fun watch.

Just wanted to mention that Michael Clarke Duncan (rest in peace) was not the first live-action version of Wilson Fisk. It was John Rhys-Davies from The Trial of the Incredible Hulk with Rex Smith as Daredevil. As many have mentioned, the Director's cut added more logical scenes while removing unnecessary ones; made the film actually better, though not by much. I kinda like this costume better than the Netflix show since it felt more devilish. The Netflix one was functional but what suit isn't during the MCU era. Felt a bit derivative, and only added the cowl with horns to make it distinguishable.

The Director's Cut smoothed out the tonal issues and created a more cohesive viewing experience. Affleck was good, but he makes a better Batman.

WOW.This was a very GOOD review of a mediocre film,learned a lot.It made 179 million dollars ???? Had a planned sequel ??? Didn't know any of these things,I saw this film when it came out ( I'm a HUGE DD fan ) I was very disappointed. Affleck has come a LONG way as an actor/director since this time ( 2003) I have both versions of DD movies,the director's cut I don't remember very well ( it's been some time since I've last seen it )This was a nostalgic ride for me,enjoyed it.
