As someone whose favorite marvel character is Daredevil, I genuinely think there are 4 runs you can pick up and still thoroughly enjoy and understand the character, as long as you know the basic origin. Miller's run is obviously a classic, Bendis' brilliant dialogue revitalized the character in the 2000s, Waid brings a fun and fresh take that still has a classic feel to it, and Zdarsky takes a simple yet obvious question and runs with it expertly. The first run I read was Waid's after watching the first season of Daredevil and i wasn't at all confused or lost when reading it, it actually made me want to read more
The worst thing about Marvel is that they refuse to keep their best stories in print! Guardian devil, man without fear, and even Born again are king out of print. Meanwhile Batman has almost every one of his best stories in print.
DUDEEEEE !!! Phenomenal video on one of my favorite comic book characters of all time ! So many great runs ! But I had straight chills when you started talking about the Bendis run ! Love it so much ! and Zdarsky's run ?!?!?! Sheeshhhhh !!! What a ride !
Bendis is my favorite so far but there’s been soooo many good ones, I can’t wait to read the second Zdarsky hardcover collection next month I’m so ready! Thanks so much for watching man :) Daredevil is my favorite character and I’ve been dying to make this video for awhile ha
Love this video. I was looking to find a video talking about where to start reading daredevil. So thank you very much. When I became a marvel fan, I was not even the fan of daredevil. Look at me now, looking on where to start reading his comics. How the time changes. Also, I must say that he is marvel’s underrated superhero. Even the new ones are more popular than him in my opinion. I am happy that we are getting another show of daredevil continuing the previous ones story. I really am grateful to marvel for doing such a thing. 🎉
Looks like I have more books to add to my reading backlog. I'll probably start with Bendis' run since that's one of the biggest suggestions I hear for DD books. Great video!
@@TheComicBookReport ya man, DD is just so dang good. The most consistent character with good writing in comics and really cool to hear he is one of ur faves!
Miller is so hard to beat :) But I feel like DD the last 20 years has been more hit than miss, but I might be biased ha. Let me know if you end up reading anything else ha 😉👍
Love that intro! Daredevil is definitely one of my all time favorite characters… If you asked me 10 years ago I wouldn’t have mentioned him. Crazy how things change.
Gooid point: read the original origin stories. Especially since a lot of stuff gets retconned. Although I must admit that Man Without Fear by Miller and JRJR is a great read and an update on DD's origin story. Just like Batman Year One is a great update. When it comes to my favorite run it's still Miller's from the 1980s.
Absolutely!! I love starting from the very beginning, but Man Without Fear is the origin story for Daredevil I enjoy reading ha. And Miller’s run is fantastic, there’s a reason he’s still actively discussed whenever Daredevil is talked about even 40 years after his run 💪💪 Thanks for watching :)
I'm very new to the comicbook scene and wathcing your video's has helped me so much, just want to thank you for the hard work you put in for this community :)
Wow! I love hearing this and it’s humbling. Thank you so much for the feedback, I’m so happy to hear you’re finding value in the channel! If you enjoyed this video I also did one covering where to start reading spider-man a few weeks ago :) 🕷️
@@TheComicBookReport I'll can't wait to see what the future of your channel will hold, all i know it will be amazing. Thank you so much and i'll be sure to check the spiderman video too! p.s just orderd the first 3 copies of the Chip Zdarsky comics, very excited :)
Hello mate. I have the 2 frank miller omni/omni companion books which are great plus Smiths guardian devil book, again superb. I have both Brubakers Daredevil slim omnis and Bendises vol 2 daredevil omni but ive yet to read them through as im waiting on the omni reprint this summer of vol one Bendis Daredevil. I Brubakers follows on from Bendis so i have to wait till ive got them all before reading. Cant wait to dove in though. This year July 2nd Zdarsky has a 600+ page omni coming out so ill be buying that. Im hoping its the start of his run but im not sure. Ive never read any Zidarsky before. Heard he's quality. All the best 👍
That Zdarsky omnibus is the first half of his run on Daredevil and it’s very good in my opinion! Bendis’ run I think is my favorite though. Sounds like you have some wonderful reading ahead 👏📚
@@TheComicBookReport Cheers man. I'm lost in reading fiction novels currently so my comic tbr pile is growing! Good to have a break from comics though. Recently I've been buying up the Darkhorse trades/epics of their Conan runs. Pricy as they're all out of print but they're well regarded. I read through Robert E Howards Complete Conan works and I was blown away by his prose and ability. I don't fancy the Marvel 70's/80's Conan omni's but the Darkhorse series is right up my street. Serious, adult and brutal ✌️😂
Good selections but I’m not feeling that Stan Lee DD as a good starting point. The writing is just dated and hard to read which can alienate a new reader, turning them off DD. Miller’s Man Without Fear is the perfect starting point. And if there’s only one DD run a person is going to read, it best be Miller’s 168-191. His work, in my opinion, created the Daredevil character that most likely is attracting an interested reader.
I completely respect your thoughts here sir 💪 I added the Stan Lee issue simply because I always believe in starting from the beginning even if you only read the single origin issue, just fun to know where they came from. Agreed that Miller really shaped the modern daredevil, and even though his run is even getting older now, I do think it definitely holds up. Of all the Miller work I do like Man Without Fear as a starting place because it rehashes the origin but is also just one on my favorite standalone miniseries 💪 I can tell you love the character and I love talking to other DD fans! Thank you so much for stopping by Out of curiosity do you have a favorite run amongst the more modern Daredevil runs?
@@TheComicBookReport Definitely. I'm typically not a superhero reader, but there's something about DD, man. So many of his runs are fantastic in their own right, but especially when compared to the bulk of superhero storytelling out there. I think a large part is that DD hasn't been a flagship character like Spider-Man, so i think writers have more room to flex and try interesting things. The Bendis/Maleev run is incredible. I like the first half of Zdarsky's quite a bit. The character of Cole North was a great addition to DD's story. Once his run hits the King in Black garbage the issues become rushed and just pale in comparison to the first half. There's a lot of story that could have been explored but I think editors were pushing hard for Devil's Reign. Devil's Reign is interesting so far, we'll see how it wraps. I love how Zdarsky’s using Elektra and am eager to see where her story as DD goes, how she takes on the Hand, etc. DD has grown in popularity with Netflix and now his appearance in MCU, i hope editors continue to let his writers tell good stories rather than become a character written by committee.
@@markxsavage great perspective! I absolutely agree. It’s pretty amazing how consistently at least decent his last several runs have been. I also just think the character of Matt Murdock is interesting too-he’s really likable while having pretty transparent flaws that get navigated in a lot of his runs. I’m still in the first half of the Zdarsky run but so far I am really Enjoying it the author has a really clear sense of voice for the characters. Agree on North and I can’t wait to see the Electra DD stuff, I’ve seen images around so I know it’s coming up but I’m waiting for the Zdarsky oversized HCs so been waiting ha Without reading a ton of superhero stuff, do you have any good recommendations for non hero comics? I read a bulk of superhero stuff but lately I’ve been venturing out ha Always in the market for a good recommendation
Great video! Man the Soule run was disappointing to me in that the transition from Waid’s classic run wasn’t handled so well but man did it have some nice art!!
Overall I enjoyed End of Days. My memory of reading it was that it didn’t live up to my expectations but it was still very solid. It has been years since I’ve read it though. I’m probably due for a re-read! I wouldn’t recommend starting with it though 📚
