Introduction of Bjarne Riis who acquired name "Mr Sixty" after Festina scandal. Full inch doper who started taking EPO in 1993 to 1998. He won Tour de France in his 11th year as professional rider at age 32. In 1996 he finally beat Miguel Indurain. Apart from blood doping Riis used cortisone and testosterone. He still exists on official list of TDF winners in opposite to eg. Lance Armstrong. This is because his admision to doping was out of UCI sanction window.
Notice:
first 10 seconds of this video comes from Danish comedy TV show "Team easy on" where original speech (admission to doping) has been replaced by fake monolog about different drugs.

I’ve always thought it was odd that so many riders of this era would answer questions about doping with “I’ve never tested positive”, rather than a simple “No, I don’t dope”…it’s like they were hedging their bets by not “completely” lying….like they thought that this ambiguous answer was not a “lie” and would therefore somehow exonerate them if they happened to be caught in the future.
@RoadBikersPoznan

I have the same problem. For instance I don't understand why Tadej Pogacar after 2 weeks of his outstanding performance during TDF2021, at press conference (rest day) responded to doubters: "I think we have many controls to prove them wrong..." instead of simple "we don't use blood doping or performance enhancing drugs".
@888jucu
@888jucu 2 года назад
I never thought it odd, it was clear admission and they were not wanting to have an outright lie on their record in the event they got caught later.
@aha200971

I think it was some kind of silent agrement between the sports "press" and the riders. "I don't lie to your face and because of that you will not dig deeper" , Before the Festina scandal in 98. The danish sports would not even ask the riders any questions about doping, so when doping became illegal in France in 1998 and the Police took action and stopped the Festina team, Riis was caught off guard because suddenly the press could no longer ignore the issue and the old "I've never tested positiv" the was no longer valid
@RoadBikersPoznan
@RoadBikersPoznan 2 года назад
Probably most of the insiders from media covering cycling were aware of doping process. Festina scandal changed the press "optics" on the subject so for instance in the 1999 one of the riders (Bassons) was reporting "suspicious" performance in press... But the "omerta" in the peloton sill worked so he was quickly "excluded" from the game and ignored even by his teamates

It is what it is. "Tempted"? Pros typically end up with two choices: 1. Doping or 2. Underperform (in comparison to the rest) and lose their job. Part of the psychological strong character and mental toughness is actually enhanced by doping meds or substances: the superman personality (which the public admires) will eventually translate to unhealthy emotional roller coasters in a considerable percentage of athletes. Does Santa Claus exist? (Do we want to believe in the unbelievable?) Let's not assume that the complex problem and its multiple dynamics -in sports at the top- is over today. The problem has actually trickled down to weekend warriors (in some countries more than others).

Riis won on equal terms, everybody was doped. It does'nt make it right, but that's how it was. Kids and young talents got into cycling back in the day and was systematically doped by the team owners, DS's and shady "doctors". The riders grew up in it, and were like cycling-junkies! It baffles me, that it was the rider(the junkie) and not the pushers that got dragged through the mud. A lot of us remember the Festina-scandal in 98- Virenque was the star, so we remember him crying in interviews, but who was the team owner? Who learned him to dope? Who got him hooked? What was the doctors name? Most dont know! Why are we in cycling focussing blame on the "junkies" and not the pushers??
@RoadBikersPoznan
@RoadBikersPoznan 2 года назад
You are absolutely right. This was always the issue in Sport. Singling out atheltes and exposing them to the media worked nicely as good PR for state funded sport organizations or politics. But also athletes often protected "the man in the middle" (pushers, system) after being caught on doping. Maybe because they didn't want to break careers of other, still riding friends? But there is also something evil about the society. Maybe scapegoating someone successful makes someone (who lives ordinary, unsatisfying live) happier... This is why (you can crucify me) I respect Lance - at least for something. He just took control over the existing dirty process like anyone before him and didn't allow the environment and media to break him like it was in case Pantani etc.
@Steve-Riverwood

@@RoadBikersPoznan Well first of all, Lance is build different! ... In his head i mean:) A lot of him is cold blooded! He can just shut of emotions and say f... it all, so he navigates a lot better than normal people in "murky water"!. He has bounced back with a Podcast of his own. The way you described it, what it resembles the most is the American-Italian mafia! There has been kind of an omerta among ex-riders not to tell on other than themselves. Ex-riders like Hamilton and Landis are outcasts for speaking up. All those old Team Telecom of 96 riders mainly told on themselves. I think that's what's has to change, because then they are still a part of the problem. They need to help the police and WADA with information on how the nuts and bolts of it all works, who does what and how. Maybe an anonymous pro-cycling whistleblower hotline could be a way to open up about what's going on, both past an present.

The thing about Riis not being a good climber etc. is kind of bullshit. Had top 5 and podium placements in the early 90's many times hindered by not being the captain of the team or having conflicts about the captain role even though he was the strongest rider on the team. The point about 60% is also kind of bullshit since he never had that high % it was just that another doper that got caught higher than 50 said it. if he was doping and Riis was beating him then Riis must have had a higher % since he could beat him. And that name has stock due to an envious virenque that got caught red handed. No reason to believe he was more doped than any other rider. And he was good in the mountains. Showed talent by an early age and was able to win a lot. But then got beaten by dopers and started to dope late, and instantly started getting succes in TDF after that. So, motors are fine, too? They make you go faster. If you’re not cheatin’ you’re not tryin’. Right? I presume you have the same outlook on being swindled by your bank, plumber, etc. Because, after all, whatever helps them make more money.

@@donwinston Cheating is cheating. And drugs taken in the absence of any therapeutic need aren’t “extra vitamins.” But, you seem too stunted to comprehend that.

@@timdowney6721 Therapeutic need? That can mean anything. If it's against the rules in some sort of competition then they shouldn't do it. Otherwise who gives a shit. But it's silly and incredibly sanctimonious to forbid PEDs.

@@donwinston Doping is not a Sign of athletes ... A real athlete will never dope..no matter what. With your own efforts you needs to get faster and stronger ... If you are doing not a real athlete .. so don't say it's fine to use PEDs and other steroids...
