Today we wrap up #MillerTime, taking one last look at Frank Miller's contribution to the Bat-Legacy. However, for these adventures, he is joined by an all-star team of Brian Azzarello, John Romita Jr. & Andy Kubert.
Starting with the short prequel: The Dark Knight Returns: The Last Crusade, Miller & Azzarello pen the final tale of Jason Todd, while Romita Jr provides some stellar artwork. Then, after a quick detour in Spawn Alley, we examine the latest adventure: The Dark Knight III: The Master Race.
Apparently there's more Miller Batman on the horizon, but for now, this is all she wrote, so we put our final stamp on his Bat-Legacy.
We're also graced with a call on the Bat-phone from friend of the show, Tevya Smolka, sharing his favorite Bat-title with us. Call in! Bat-lines are open!

NGL I didn't care for the Miller Batverse before DK3 and Last Crusade. But these and Golden Child really pulled me in. I honestly want to see what's next for this world.

Huh. Golden Child didn't strike much of a chord with me, but maybe I need to give it a re-read. Felt like the most all-over the place out of any of his DK books. Love the art though, and the political commentary... You may have sparked me to give it another read soon.

Miller did take more pride and ownership in Last Crusade. I really liked that story even if the ending was imperfect. Great John Romita Jr. art. Dark Knight III was okay, but not great.

i could be wrong, but i’ve always guessed that Frank Miller’s animosity towards Dick Grayson/Robin stemmed from him mainly being associated with the campy 1966 TV show and The Super Friends. perhaps Miller had the same misconception of Robin that Nolan had. somehow Robin just wasn’t edgy enough to run with Batman. Carrie Kelley ditching the ‘Robin’ persona in the sequel really got me thinking this. that and just how ultra-violent he made Jason Todd. i definitely don’t think Miller would have ever incorporated Tim Drake into his universe, because Tim is very optimistic. one of Dick Grayson’s most prominent traits is that he’s also very optimistic and lighthearted. yet somehow Miller turns him into a hero murdering psycho.

i grew up on the Super Friends and re-runs of the 1966 Batman show, so the dynamic Duo has always held a special place for me. i don't mind grim and gritty stories once in a while, by i try my best to overlook Miller's treatment of Robin. especially since i admire him so much as a comic creator. that's one good thing about headcanon. i love the original TDKR. when i read it, i'll just forget that the tacked on afterthought sequels and prequels ever existed. 😛 it's not like Morrison's Batman run, where it all seems like it had an intended deliberate plot from it's inception. especially with all the clues and foreshadowing sprinkled throughout his entire run. 🙂

Not bad, as I've said previously the apparent quality of art and story has not had me at all interested in reading this batman run but this final episode may change that. DK3 actually seems like it has a consistant story rather than it just being a bunch of things that happen in sequence. I had heard the miller comments of "dk4, that'll be the real ending" before, and now knowing how this ended I hope there isn't a dk4 as it seems to have wrapped up nicely and provided a nice arc. it was always just my guess, but i felt most of the fan-service happy ending stuff from DKIII might have been Azzarello’s doing.

Recently listened to Azzarello discuss the book on a podcast (Word Balloon podcast). He mentions that Miller had a lot of ideas for specific sequences he wanted to include, and I think Azzarello helped bridge a lot of those moments into a complete story. Also- Azzarello is a curmudgeon.

Just read the latest Doomsday Clock and HIC and I can finally say I'm into where this Watchmen jaunt is taking me and I so far am into this new event. They have my attention.

Feel like Azzarello (as little as I like him On his own. He's a Rucka, aka ok here & there) really helped & centered Miller's drunken madness. He's for sure influences by him & again in not the hugest JRJr fan but he did superb here (as opposed to On Suicide Squad which was awful & matters because I'm a huge fan) really did a good Miller-meets-Kirby. I liked that overall. I like the legacy artists this far, that they exist (3 generations of Kubert by now even!)

Was curious if DK2 was actually required to read this so I'm glad you guys mentioned that it is bc I want to get the full experience for Master Race. I read book 1 of DK2 and it was a chore but not as bad as Holy Terror lol

Yep. It's worth reading for the sheer ridiculousness- and because what comes next (which is quite good) picks up directly from it... but otherwise... whewboy... it's an acquired taste for sure.

Figured I'd return it to my co-worker before she started asking too many questions. Plus- I have so many Batman shirts in my closet that I need an excuse to wear more often. Hang tight- there's more costumed fun to be had... Halloween is approaching after all...

This was great. Loved this series. I am especially fond of The Master Race and I can't really figure out why. I prefer it to all of Miller's Batman, with the exception of Year One and feel it finally grounds the narrative in a necessary manner. The Atom? Makes sense Super-armour? Makes sense Wonder woman kicking the living piss out of a minatour? Perfect. Loved this book and I'm excited to hear your thoughts on the next. Maaaaaaybe some Saga? Or East of West?

I hated Last Crusade. When it comes to Master Race, I was getting in floppies and the delays really killed it for me. After issue 2, the delays started getting longer and longer. Between issue 5 and 6 there was a 4 month delay. During that time I just decided to drop it because I was losing patience. However, what I read of it, minus the mini comics, I enjoyed. Didn't love it but enjoyed it. I really like Kubert's art though.

It's hard for me to do really any events by issue because of the inevitable delays. But once it's collected, it's like they never happened!

Awesome episode as always. Looks like Vampire is happening, so I’m definitely stoked on the spooky episodes. And I know you guys brought it up last episode, but to see you two take on the sheer lunacy that is Batman: Odyssey would be amazing. Thanks, as always guys!
