The reason why Katie Holmes got recast was because of Tom Cruise, he didn't want her having roles in movies because he thought that she would be a bigger star than him.

Rachel Dawes (in The Dark Knight) is far and away the most well-written heroine in a superhero film to date. Inner conflict, good dialogue, and a twist. That's good writing, no matter what you try to say about Gyllenhaal.

I think Katie felt like 'batman's' love interest in a 'blockbuster movie' - like in a lot of big movies like that she is there as a character for batman and seemingly not a whole person herself. Whereas Maggie's version felt like a woman that had that connection with batman, but she was still a whole woman batman or not.

Arthur Waring I like Katie Holmes much better than Maggie Gyllenhal just like they replace Terrence Howard into Don Cheadle from Iron Man 2. I found her more interesting she's not that good at acting for other moments sure but at least she looks more like a woman. Its not because shes attractive she's more independent and nice to me I like the way she talks about Harmony is Peace & Revenge is Better. If you don't agree to what I just said right now then good for you but Its to share peoples opinion. That if I like something that they like I agree on that but if I don't like something they like then I don't.

Both women did well in their own movie. Katie was Bruce's girl (most chemistry) and Maggie was a strong woman who kept Bruce at a distance and had a relation with someone else.

When I watched the dark knight(I was 5 years old) I thought Katie wasn’t in the movie Dark Knight and she left. I also thought Maggie was a different character that has a the same name as Rachel (Katie) and I felt different now

Maggie is a better actress than Katie. But there was more chemistry between Katie and Christian Bale than with Maggie. (And Katie is better looking) I like to think when Bruce was pissed at Alfred for hiding Rachel's letter, Bruce was grieving for Katie's Rachel than Maggie's.

I agree completely, I don't understand people who prefer Gyllenhaal's Rachel to Katie Holmes'. I'm not a huge fan of Katie Holmes myself but she definitely made a better Rachel Dawes than Maggie IMO

@ChrisRedfield08 First off, Maggie is VERY pretty in my eyes. So is Katie Holmes. But I do think that Katie Holmes had that hard-edge vibe that an attorney has more than Maggie did. I think Katie was a much better Rachel Dawes.

Maggie Gyllenhall did a great job. WAY better than Katie Holmes. Katie didn't seem to care about bruce wayne at all in that film. The way she played the role was very tacky. Maggie added a lot of depth to her character. When her character died I felt like something was missing and the whole film escalated from that moment on. I am pretty sure Katie would not have been able to pull that off in an effective way. kudos to Maggie!

I think Rachel was one of the best parts of the script in The Dark Knight. I would have been so pissed if Katie was to play the superior Rachel. She was the most principle character aside from Bruce, Dent, and The Joker.

Yeah balls to everybody bad mouthing Maggie. Don't get me wrong, Katie was okay in Batman Begins as Rachel but Maggie just shun for me in Dark Knight. She bought a bit of intelligence to the role which Katie, in my opinion, didn't. I thought Maggie was great. She ain't as bad a looker as everybody seems to think either I don't think :)

Has anyone thought about how she actually felt in the 'always smiling' scene, cause for sure im sure she actually freaked out... who wouldnt in a situation there, cause what if Heath though about going the whole way, getting stuck in the act and making it real.. cause he was a super fantastic actor and surely she was convinced... I wonder if there is a interview with her about that.. how she really felt in that scene; was she truely scared and did she think of cutting the scene in the moment?

@jazzmatik I agree, discontinuity sucks. But sometimes it's inevitable. Like during the filming of Revolutions when Gloria Foster (the Oracle) died that really really sucked. She was incredible. But the Wachowski Bros. worked around the story-line to make sense of why she wasn't there. Some people see that as dis-respectful, Nothing wrong with the story being tweaked in order to make more sense. It wouldn't be dis-respectful to re-cast The Joker either. Heath would have wanted that. R.I.P.

Mm, why are you angry? In Hollywood actresses get replaced so what? Beside Katie Holmes did not wanted to reprise her role as Rachel - don't let your anger out Maggie. In fact Maggie is one of the few people in Hollywood that are truly interested in making movies that matter. To say someone "ugly", please maybe you should post a picture of yourself and have other judge you like you judge Maggie.

@ChrisRedfield08 Although Maggie isnt stunning she is still pretty in some sense and yes i agree with you that he cast her for this role because she is a normal type of woman but i dont think nolan mainly choose her for this role because she is unattractive and he though it would suit the character but because he found her personallity intriguing and representative. Not everything in the world balances on who is good looking or not it is what you do, how you present yourself and who you are.

Maggie Gyllenhaal is definitely a great actress but Katie Holmes fit the role 1000% better than Maggie. But to be honest even if Katie Holmes did reprise her role as Rachel in The Dark Knight, I still would’ve hated the character in the second movie since, she was written as a stuck up bitch.

@TheCrazedLorry98 the both of you guys are wrong.. Katy was suppose to return, but she chose to be in "Mad Money" instead. Unfortunately, this world is very biased in terms on looks. If you disagree, that tells me you're insecure about your looks and in denial. Movies of all things are discriminatory in terms of looks. It all depends on that, your name and if you can act good enough. That's why Katy got the part. You're not going to change actresses because someone else can act better....

I agree both actresses a great, however suited for different roles. Maggie's Rachel was not my favorite, I think she took away something from the character by trying to make totally her own as she clearly admitted and unfortunately it did not work so well.

"Dark Knight" center around the batman & joker character - Rachel is a supporting character. How can her being in the film, screw up the film?It's clear to say that you don't know much about any Batman Movie or movie making at all. Because the main attention in "Dark Knight" is Heath Ledger performance - before you judge a whole movie maybe educate yourself - but I assume your like what 10 year kid who has no life, sit on the computer all day?

she screwed up the movie with her bunkness, i know the director was looking for the an awe inspiring event when batman saved harvey dent rather than her... but i actually felt relief when i did the math and realized she couldnt screw any future batman movies up.. anyone know who else was up for the role of rachel? im guessing they casted an ugly rachel so it wouldnt piss the audience off when she had to die.

It was because The Dark Knight was focused more on Heath Ledgers joker, and overshadowed Maggies katie. I'd say it also overshadowed Gary Oldmans role. If there were more Maggie scenes, she would've got more credibility. Shame she ain't in The Dark Knight Rises.
