Dark Side of Soul: Could THIS Be The Real Reason Soul Train's Don Cornelius Unalived Himself?
Peace, Love and Soul. Those were the last words we’d hear everytime Don Cornelius signed us off of Soul Train’s weekly national broadcast. The famous catchphrase has echoed in our minds every Saturday morning since 1971 with Don set center stage full of afro sheen, ready to take us on an hour long journey through the lens of black America’s trendiest forms of entertainment. Soul Train gave us an escape into the world of black culture during a time when the culture was given the crappy end of the stick, Don propelling the likes of ‘black music,’ dance, and a variety of pop culture’s hottest topics. Soul Train’s wheels wouldn’t be derailed until 2006, but it's conductor may have become unhinged long before the days of Soul Trains departure.

I danced on Soul Train from 1980 to 1985. I enjoyed it very much. To participate down the soul train line you were hand picked. Fortunately I was able to do that too! It was fun and met lots of people. In my early 20’s and in college at the time, it was one of those things you never forget!

I was the youngest contestant. The night after the contest. They had dinner for us. At Capitol records. That night was the best. Black people dancing like you've never seen before. There’s nothing wrong with sex, as we all know, the problem in this melting pot culture is the casual sexual conduct promoted and practiced, which lead’s to promiscuity and infatuation. Anyone who think’s that you can have sexual inter course with someone for superficial reasons and avoid the deeper connections that instantly happens in the act, you’re fooling yourself! Most people in this world today living this way are so far astray from their sanity because of having sex based on superficial things, facial and body appearance, how much material wealth one possess, social clout, etc., but spiritually who they are, you don’t know enough, their mental history, you don’t know enough, and their emotional stability, you don’t know enough…….but your libido and sex drive, you let it drive you straight to misery in the company of demons perhaps. 🤔

I’ve been at a good place for some years, widowed , but had a wonderful marriage. And I’m thankful most of all that I won’t die being in one of the worst conditions possible; AN OLD DAMN FOOL. I love Soul Train for what it represented & what it did for the culture. I beam with pride & want to get up & dance anytime I watch those clips from the 70s, 80s, & 90s (it's heyday). It is the ultimate culture time capsule! That being said, I watched the A&E Playboy documentary when it premiered last year & when that episode ended, my jaw was still on the floor in shock It's just disappointing when you have these figures you once respected, attached to this piece of art you've loved & practically raised you since birth, unmasked. I never would've expected that from the person we thought we knew all those years; inviting him into our living room every Saturday morning, but the same could be said about Bill Cosby I believe every word of it as a lot of attitudes about the treatment of women have progressed some, but not enough--and knowing the 70s, it was downright dinosaur territory. Women's Lib was just bubbling to the surface, so I'm sure the mentality of men of that generation was to strike while the iron is hot (for a lack of a better term) Many of our "heroes" of a certain age often ran together. They had money, power, & access. I shutter to think of how many more of these stories are out there that haven't come to light or the women who have gone to their graves knowing no one would believe them

I saw his work ethic and negotiating skills. From my perspective, he was a major bootstrapper, a person who was sure of himself and one who expected the best from those in his production. I can attest to the severe migraines he would have to the point that it would lay him down. I coudn't help but admire his hustle. 👍🏾Thank you so much for this post. Once I found out about his whyte wife, I was through with him. Thoroughly enjoyed this memory of his undoing, though. Glad to know he got *exactly* what he *wanted* ! Good for him! 😀

You mean the barrel of a gun? I was disappointed too when I found out after all of the people of color that he inspired over the years. When it came to black pride and excellence, during a time when young black people were focusing on their identity, their worth and power within our communities he helped to inspire so many brothers yet he chose to pull up,take the easy way out in the end and ignorantly leave all of his money to a skanky non melenated whore. This story is more disappointing than Bill Cosbys.

Ummm has anyone watched this while you all are reveling in his accomplishments did anyone notice he was a crazy abuser who loved to beat and abuse women? See this is how r kelly got away with this for so long. The Blk community allows this for the sake of nostalgia
