Digging through the lore, you find that she is actually locked away in a location somewhere near the Ancient Dragon. This is why she uses illusions and always knows where you are.

+Ruitao Li Dark Souls 2 had it's director changed half way through. That's why it's so disjointed, Tanimura had to piece together a half finished game from someone else's ideas. He had free reign on DLC though, which is why the DLC is amazing. If DS2 had 1 director from the beginning it would have been amazing. SotFS fixes many issues and I would highly recommend it.

Slevin Reviews I don't think Velstadt is guarding Vendrick as much as he is keeping him inside the crypt. He is facing him. You usually turn your back on what it is you're guarding and face whatever may come and menace it. Velstadt dark magic links him to Nashandra in my opinion. And the fact that Elana summons a Velstadt look-alike kinda makes me thin the guy was on the Children of Dark side.

AoNoise King Vendrick is someone is who would ask for his guard to keep him contained once he became corrupted, for the safety of his land and people.

+Slevin Reviews I feel pity for Vendrick. He was a little similar to the Ivory King in that both were good kings with good intentions. The problem is, Vendrick never realized what Nashandra really was and thus, he was easily manipulated into doing her bidding. Maybe the war with the Giants would never have occured if it wasn't for his blind love. The Ivory King, on the other hand, knew all along what Alsanna was and, through his actions, he changed *who* she was. One should think what would've happened had Vendrick known of Nashandra's true nature. Would he have feared her? Would he have loved her still? Would he have exiled her or have her killed? Would he have tried to change who she was, similar to how the Ivory king changed Alsanna? Sadly, these intriguing questions will never be answered. It's ironic how similar they are. Vendrick's love for Nashandra was real, just like the Ivory King's love for Alsanna was. The difference is Nashandra never felt the same for Vendrick, whereas Alsanna grew to love the Ivory King too. It's like both represented two ways a story could've gone.

+AoNoise makes sense. The fight Velstadt/Raime was also about Nashandra I believe. Was it only "loyalty" that kept Velstadt from seeing the truth? I doubt that know.

That love story is so heart breaking! Sorry for rambling here, but I just can't resist. All along the Ivory King knew of Alsanna's identity and possible goals, but did not choose to banish her or fear her. Instead, he gave her the one thing she most needed and probably desired deep down: love. Alsanna grew torn as the years went by. She had finally found a king who she could exploit, who could protect her while she gathered her strengh, but his love and dedication to both her and his people, combined with his selfless acts of being the first to defend Eleum Loyce from both the Old Chaos and outside forces, started to change her. The confort and security the Ivory King provided her was something she never thought she would experience from a king. Alsanna still kept her true identity a secret in fear of her king's possible wrath if he ever learned the truth. But before she realized, Alsanna was helping him hold back the Old Chaos as his oracle. All the conflicting feelings she must've had during this time... The Ivory King, knowing well who she was, kept her identity a secret to protect her. Caring for her safety, he had his favourite pet Aava guard Alsanna from anyone who could possibly harm her. He trusted her. He knew she had ulterior motives, but he trusted her nonetheless. He felt, believed, that this child of Dark wasn't just a fragment of the Abyss seeking power. She was an augur of fear. She was alone and frightened. She was seeking confort, someone who could ease her fear. He sensed that and took pity upon her. And against all senses of reason, he decided to trust and protect this creature who could probably betray him at any given chance. Because he loved her. However, the battle to contain the Old Chaos was a never ending nightmare. Knights fell and died, abominations surfaced and killed, Eleum Loyce was constantly under threat of being consumed. The Raging Flame would never cease. And in time, it began to consume the king's very soul, degradating it little by little. The Ivory King sensed this. He knew he didn't have much time. And so, to protect his kingdom and his people from the flames and himself, the Ivory King decided to plunge into the Old Chaos. If he were to succumb, he would do so fighting against his old enemy, and not against his own people. His trustful knights would not allow him to go alone. They followed him and the few who remained to protect the city were given the order by the king himself to strike any threat that came out of the flames, even if said threat were their own king. But the Ivory King knew that someone would have to take his place. And there was only one whom he trusted with such an arduous task. But he knew not what to say to her. He only knew he would miss her. Alsanna was unaware of the Ivory King's plans until, one day, he appeared before her and gave her a sword, inscribed with the name of Eleum Loyce. After that, he left without saying a word. She realized what was happening. He was going to sacrifice himself to try and hold back the accursed flames and, not expecting to come back, had passed down control of everything to her. What a conflicting feeling it must've been. There it was, the chance for power that she probably came there for. The chance to rival her sisters. Power. But at the same time, there he goes. The man, the wonderful man who was there when she most needed. Who protected her when she was alone. Who provided her confort when she was afraid. The only soul in the whole world who trully loved her. What is more important? What to do? Most likely, she was unsure, until she noticed something. The sword inscribed with the kingdom's name had a unique design. Two blades, one white, one black. Both distinctively different from one another, yet joined together by the same hilt, fighting the same battles for the same goal. United, depite their differences. Alsanna realized what that meant. The white blade simbolized the Ivory King and his white frozen kingdom. The black blade represented Alsanna and her Dark related origins. This reveal broke her heart. The Ivory King knew! He knew all along what and who she was, but did not care. He took her in, cared for her, protected her, gave her an important role by his side and loved her, all the while knowing that she was plotting against him. And he never revealed her secret, he never demonstrated he knew, so that others would not come to fear her and harm her. And how was she planning to repay him? With betrayal? That was not right! It was not right at all! He trusted her, even though she didn't deserve it! He loved her and she didn't even get a chance to say good-bye! Or more importantly, thank you. It was decided. From that day forward, in honor of her wonderful king, Alsanna would carry on his wishes and protect the world from the damned flames of Chaos with everything she had! She used her newfound strengh to freeze the entire kingdom and contain the Chaos. She remained there, in the thrones room, watching over that gaping hole in the ground where the Old Chaos dwelt. She remained vigilant. She would contain the Old Chaos, honor the Ivory king's wishes, until the end of times. Their love was so true that it changed entirely who Alsanna was. From a creature with similar goals as Nashandra, Elana and Nadalia, Alsanna became a selfless and devoted entity. Unlike the other children of Dark, she doesn't fight you and you don't have to fight her. She willingly gives her own soul to you both to aid on your quest,a token of gratitude and a hope that you'll be capable of defending yourself against her sisters. The Ivory King changed Alsanna and he did not od that wiht ruthlessness. He did not do that with blind devotion. He did not do that with an iron will. He did not do that with power. He did that with love.

After the King of the Sanctum, we shall discover the true nature of the Old Iron King and his Old Iron Crown in that towering inferno, but after that, what of the Ivory Crown? What king dwelt in that frigid temple? And more importantly, what will happen when all four Daughters of the Abyss fall and their essence comes together? Or... shall they be reborn in a fifth sister?

GmodPlusWoW Well this is me going out on a limb, but the game hints that when you absorb a soul it gathers in you. So what happens if you absorb all/many of Manus's fragments? Well you either become his new vessel, or I suppose you could set aside all of your power and burn it to preserve the world. I doubt it will actually get that deep, but that is the implication to me.

Sparda I'm thinking that the souls you gather don't become 'one with you' until you use them to 'forge your soul' by leveling, because dying can loose them. And the only option w/ the 4 great souls besides making boss weapons/spells is to essentially shatter them into a bunch of little souls for leveling or buying stuff (or loosing via death). If you could 'merge' w/ one like the Lords did and gain abilities similar to the Lords themselves (skeleton summoning from Nito, miracle casting w/out a catalyst like Gwyn in the opening cinematic, flame sorcery like the WoI, ect...), that would be an awesome game feature! It would also put great weight behind your idea, but I'm thinking the 'influence' the souls exert on the player isn't much unless such a 'merging' is done. I like the thought though.

maybe because he lived very very long with a huge amount of souls, the giant Souls and the Lord Vessel. The normal Knights were very Powerfull, too so they grew. Plus he stole something from the Giants and he was capable of splitting his soul and place it on a throne. It could also be that they are descendance of Gwyn and the Knights, because they were larger too and the furtive Pygmy was a normal human.

He and his brother were really skilled in working with souls. Probably he absorbed the soul of a giant trying to defeat the curse, hoping to gain the immunity that giants have. But it failed.

***** I really hate poking holes in people's speculation, as it does kinda kill the mood, but if the Emerald Herald wanted to kill the Chosen Undead that are drawn to her, I think she would probably have either a literally impossible task for them, or some kind of equally impossible ambush planned somewhere so they die endlessly. Everything he or she does is entirely possible, as proven by the player when they persevere. Even if she wanted to kill them when they were stronger, the Herald seems to have more sense than her sisters, and would likely kill off the Chosen Undead the second they returned with one of the Lord Souls and take it then, allowing the next Undead who will undoubtedly appear to collect the next, before repeating the cycle. Before long she would have them all, and by then the Chosen Undead would be so weak (because he/she only had to go through one obstacle, as opposed to the players experience of dozens) that they would inevitably be killed by Nashandra after handing over the last of their powerful souls to the Herald as she appears beyond the final King's Gate before the throne.

***** dragons have 2 arms, 2 legs and 2 wings; their wings and arms are separated parts. Drakes' arms and wings are not separated. So Guardian Dragon and Hellkite Drake are not dragons, they're drakes. in the first game Seathe didn't have his own soul, it was a part of Gwyn's soul given to him. In DkS1 Kalameet, Gaping Dragon(which was a true dragon once) and undead dragons didn't have souls, as didn't Seathe. Souls came with the fire, Dragons were existing long before the fire came, so dragons didn't have souls. In the first game this even explained in the opening cutsene that the life and death came with fire, and with fire came disparity, even the lord souls came with fire... Giving a soul to ancient/everlasting dragon really fucks this up. They fucked it up. The Duke's Archives only itself, is better than any area of DkS2. Hell, exclude Lost Izalith, any area of DkS1 is better than DkS2's. THEY FUCKED IT UP, they fucked up the lore, the feeling, the combat, the estus flask, the bosses, the fun and even the rolling and IF. what better thing this game has? twin blades, lances, sickles, multiple soul consumption at once, aiming with crossbow, pvp and hexes. Can't blame Vaati for content frequency, there isn't much or worth content in the game to produce videos more frequently.

Here is the description of Ancient dragon soul: "Soul of the great ancient dragon that stands magnificently, deep within the shrine. This powerful being stands and waits, for whoever may visit him. Use the dragon soul, created by those who peered into the essence of the soul, to acquire numerous souls, or to create something of great worth." if it's created, why we get it in a memory from a distant past? So Aldia went to memory, implanted the soul, take the dragon bone, craft the fake dragon? Sinh's soul is created too? The problem is, there should be no soul of dragons without giving an explanation like Seathe's in the first game. Old King Soul, Old Witch Soul, Old Dead One Soul are ok, but wtf is the Old Paledrake Soul? Seathe didn't have it in the first place! In DkS2 It all sound like the Dark Soul that the Furtive Pygmy found isn't one of the lord souls, and Seathe had the 4th lord soul in the first place. Sinh shouldn't had a soul, Old Paledrake Soul shouln't be existed. These all contradicts with the lore.

madnessphere All of the Memories are made, constructed by vendrick and aldia, like safelocks, the most secure safelocks, to keep the Throne of Want even more secure from Nashandra. The ability to make these "memories" could be what they "peered". Anyway it is sure that this souls fuck up the lore really bad

Raime and Velstadt were described as the "right and left hands of the king" according to the rebel shield description. Velstadt is the royal Aegis or "shield", but why would a king need two shields? I suspect that Raime's title would be similar to "Royal Sword" or to something of that effect. Therefore, I do not believe that he would like Velstadt and be what Alana conjures up. I find it more likely that Raime is the Pursuer. Raime and Velstadt fought one another and the King chose to side with Velstadt. What if Raime discovered that Velstadt had malicious intentions to the king and that is the reason for his "betrayal" by attacking Velstadt.

But there are more than one Pursuer, even at the same time. And he always drops the Ring: "The Ring of Blades is modeled after the mad knight of Alken's weapon of choice. Increases physical attack. The kingdoms of Alken and Venn long ago flourished on these very grounds. They were both founded by the same man, but were reduced to rivalry and spite." Now the kingdoms of Alken and Venn are tied to the belltowers, which are also tied to the Old Iron King since one of the belltowers is in his own castle. Another interesting point is if we defeat the Pursuer at the old fort, we get taken to the Lost Bastille by his eagle/raven, and later we encounter him again at the Iron Keep. So this is not pretty good connected to Raime

Oh, the Arch-drakes could be the decedents of the sunken city. The shrine might even be built on top of it, perhaps they flooded it to contain the poison. This makes a lot of sense. Vendrick conquered the land and built his castle ontop of the older kingdom. The undead defenders still remain below. So here is my contribution. I don't think Velstadt's appearance is symbolic. Velstadt's Set: "A knight from a faraway land was lured to this accursed land, but forgot even why he came, eventually reduced to a shadow of his former self." I think he is a knight from the sunken city. Pehaps he left after the city fell to poison or heard of lord soul that Vendrick had (Gwens), ether way there is a lot to tie him to that city. Royal Aegis is a title, and can be ether singular or in fact refer to a group. Perhaps the one that is summoned is just part of the same sect of royal bodyguards to defend royalty. Or perhaps it is just the nature of the dark to be able to summon heroes of the past (Rickard/Havel are both in the chasm and I think the dark version of Orenstien is from there too)

BTW this is the kind of stuff that I think is going to make DS2 story top DS1. There is more room for interpretation and less straight up answers. Some need defined answers... but those people are lame, I like that my crazy theory is just as valid as yours and there are parts of the games story that are personal to us.
