When Jessie and James finally capture pikachu after 25 years then realized it’s useless because it can’t evolve Giovanni: perfect, now go capture zacian and zamazenta :)
I feel like it should be noted that in Japan the Dark type is the "evil" type and because Gym Leaders are seen as role models to their community, Pokémon never wanted an "evil" gym leader. At least until Piers/Marnie came along, but they had ties to like "a gang" so it made more sense. (Giovanni doesn't really make sense with this logic but still)
I mean I guess it does make sense. Adding onto this, the manga had multiple Gym Leaders and Elite Four as evil team members. Multiple Gym Leaders in Kanto were secretly part of Team Rocket.
Here's an updated version of this video: In gen 8, more specifically in Legend Arceus (excuse me, Arkoos) we got the Hisuian variants of Samurott and Qwilfish and Overqwil, the evolution of Hisuian Qwilfish. Off these, Hisuian Samurott would make the biggest impact. The new move was Ceasless Edge, the signature move of Hisuian Samurott, with 65 BP and 90 acc which has an increased critical hit ratio. It also leaves the target with splinters for 4 turns (strong style), 2 turns (agile Style), or 3 turns (otherwise). Now in gen 9 it sets up one layer of spikes on the target's side of the field and doesn't have high chances of critical hits anymore. Gen 9: the new pokémon were Meowscarada, Lokix, Mabostiff, Bombirdier, Kingambit, Brute Bonnet, Iron Jugulis, Wo-Chien, Chien-Pao, Ting-Lu, Chi-Yu and Roaring Moon. Off these Meowscarada, Kingambit and Chien-Pao would go on to make the biggest impact. Especially Chien-Pao who got banned to Ubers thanks to its incredible speed and incredible attack, powered by its ability Sword of Ruin, reducing the defense by all pokémon in the field by 25%. The new moves were Ruination which is the signature move of the Teasure of Ruin which deals damage equal to 50% of the opponent's remaining HP, Kowtow Cleave is for Kingambit with 85 BP that never misses, and Comeuppance which returns 1.5 times the damage dealt by the foe's last attack no matter if it's physical or special. The specialist is Giacomo, the boss of Team Star's Segin Squad. Please like this comment so more people can know this info.
Great comment! Another fun fact, With the new Pokemon Lokix (Bug, dark), every type has now been paired with a dark. Making it the fourth type to have reached this status, after Flying, Water, and Psychic.

Hey Michael, I noticed at 19:15 you say you’ve never seen Parting Shot used. It’s actually been super impactful in the Series 9 and 10 formats of competitive SwSh, a lot of Incineroars run it (Incineroar was also one of the most widely used mons in the Player’s Cups)
That's actually pretty surprising. Mikey has said in the past that he doesn't play much competitive, so that's prob why he didn't know. I'm sure that if he sees this he'll be mildly interested.

Personally, I have always found it weird that Gyrados didn't become dark type over flying. It is an aggressive sea monster that destroys whole towns, and even makes sense with the legend the line is based on. It fits the angry serpent perfectly.
I assume a part of the reason they didn't change Gyrados' type was it would break Lance's team design of having all Flying Pokemon. That and I feel Gyrados was and is a very popular Pokemon so making it Dark would turn the hardest gym leader Sabrina into a trivial fight for many players.

There is a little error on the gen 3 section. Knock off was actually the reason why hariyama and armaldo were good pokemons in adv singles having your leftovers nullified on the permanent sandstorm was pretty bad

Parting shot is actually quite useful competitively! It gives momentum similar to volt switch or u turn, while also making it easier for the Pokémon who’s switching in. Also Mega Tyranitar, while fine, is not often used as base tyranitar with an item is often just as good if not better.
@@urkerab it can, but normal ttar does the same thing and can maybe provide recovery with leftovers, or gain a power boost with life orb mega ttar doesn't have that option, and it really hurts it imo
Yeah, Parting Shot is actually really good; it's just not that commonly learned. The pokemon that can learn it can make really good use of it. There's nothing that's immune to it unlike Volt Switch, plus it doesn't require a Bug typing and/or a good Attack stat to make a huge impact like U-Turn does. There's a lot of Pokemon that would be busted if they could learn Parting Shot.
Fun fact: The dark type has a really weird name in german. The regular german term for dark is "finster" or "dunkel". But rather than that being the type's german name, whoever was in charge of translation at that time instead came up with a new word. They took the prefix "un" (as in words like "unclear" "unimportant" etc.) and put it in front of "Licht", which is german for light. So the german name of the type is "Unlicht", which literally translates as "unlight". And yes, in german it sounds just as ridiculous as it does in english.
I'm not a native speaker but I did play Gen 9 in German and I found it weird that they called the dark type this. Especially knowing what the Japanese translation is I feel like calling it finster would have been the logical move but LOL who knows xD
As a fan of JRR Tolkien's work, I think 'unlight' is a pretty cool, if kind of odd, choice of words. In the Silmarillion, unlight is used to describe the webs spun by Ungoliant, a sort of primeval evil spider creature. It denotes not just the absence of light, but more so negative light, something that goes beyond just darkness and is more of a void that can't be seen through.
"knock off was complete garbage in generation 3" it just wasn't an offensive weapon then, it was still invaluable utility on mons such as haryama and deoxys defence
I think Mega Sableye was also a big deal in strategy in stall teams, a type of teams who plays very defensively and win by chipping little damages on the opponent while being themselves almost unkillable. A winning but highly unpopular strategy XD
Mega Sableye's power is that not only it has huge defenses, it also has Magic Bounce and you can't just DOT it. But then again, regular Sableye can have Prankster and can throw out some debuffs before your opponent does something valuable.
Mega sableye acted more like a wall to stall teams, where they like to set up rocks and toxic whirlwind or roar etc etc, with magic bounce it'd send everything back at the staler and ruing the strategy
Excited to see the Ice and Normal types: Then vs Now episodes. I think these 2 types had some interesting changes throughout the generations. Ice types used to be the Dragon counter while Normal types had more or less a roller coaster ride.
Dark is weak to fighting and bug because in Japanese the dark type translates to Aku meaning evil and both the fighting and bug type have a strong association with superheroes in Japan. From Kamen Rider to Medabots and everything in-between the popularity of bugs among Japanese youth have lead to many beetle and other bug themed heroes and the popular hobby of bug catching even lead to Pokemon's creation.
To give a better and more simple answer If you start throwing punches and kicks in the dark, you can hit whoever is hiding in the dark. For bugs, most bugs can handle dark and stay hidden in it Bam,lol
But a few dark typs can lern psychic attacks or fire, or has combo to kill Bugs and piondragi kills fairys 😆😆😆 so, dark is not weak anymore 😏 i just love them all, but a lot from other types too ^^
18:00 I'm not necessarily new to this channel, but I love how he actually says *"YAVELTAL"* in an actual informative video like this one. Never lose your pep Mikey. 😂
Gen 5 dark and ghost is so good I'm not joking one team I had in white was Samurott Krookodile Scrafty Chandelure Haxorus Sigyliph Yeah I legit had 2 dark types (though tbh they fulfilled the ground and fighting spots)
If you’ve never played with a Zoroark and a Chandeluer on the same team and had your fox disguise itself as a flaming ghost, then you’re missing out (seriously, Zoroark is only weak to 3 types and chandeluer is resistant or immune to all of them, so you’re appoint would almost never throw a super effective move your way, and Zoroark resists the dark and ghost moves that would normally be super effective against its chandeleur disguise, AND one of the best coverage moves that Zoroark gets is flamethrower, which is a move that wouldn’t be suspicious at all to see a chandeluer using, it really is just such an amazing duo).
Back to team type balance one platinum playthrough of mine was Infernape Starraptor Gastrodon Gliscor Garchomp Gallade Yeah so there's 2 flying types, 2 fighting teams and literally THREE ground types
parting shot is very prominent on incineroar in the vgc, it hits both of the foes with an intimidate and then uses parting shot to switch out while weakening a pokemon like coalossal or dragapult that usually dynamaxes and then benefits off of being hit with a supereffective move and weakness policy-ing. it would mean that by the time the weakness policy activated, the boosts would just bring it back to neutral.
Your statement is correct except the fact that you're late one or two seasons, since dragapult and especially coalossal aren't really that used anymore
Dark-type WAS a great foil for most Psychic types, so imagine my surprise when they incidentally buffed a few psychic types by making them part Fairy. This made some of the best casual psychic-type pokemon both good and bad at the same time. Good because now they can resist to Dark-types. Bad because that means that the Poison-type (a type that Psychics use to brush off easily) generally overpowered as those Psychic pokemon that became part Fairy have lost their resistances/immunities to Poison-types, and all it takes is one Poison-type move, and your Psychic/Fairy type is dead.
Steel is a better counter for Psychic/Fairy than Poison is, since Psychic resists Poison, which neutralizes the Fairy-type's weakness. Plus, Steel-types resist both STAB types, while most Poison-types are still weak to Psychic.
Still, Steel's resistance to both STABs and better overall attacking typing makes it a better check, in general. Poison's better than it was, but it's still generally inferior to Steel, overall.
Gotta say, Dark type has always been one of, if not my absolute, favourite pokemon type. It probably makes for a better combo type than a standalone type, but I still love it.
Even after all the nerfs and now even umbreon being obliterated in usefulness since it can't learn toxic anymore, it's still my FAVORITE type and pokemon.
a favourite standout for me is always Absol, I love their design and "Gimmick" of having a lot of high-crit and steller attack stats with Super Luck. Add in Night Slash, Psycho Cut for coverage, and other high-crit moves, give them one of the like, 3 crit-boosting held items, and you have a critical hit machine that requires basically no setup to use, and is flatly immune to one of the best types in the game. I've had a Super Luck Absol carry me through some otherwise hard fights just with his strong stat, high crit, and pretty good coverage Sure he gets walled by high Defense pokemon and those with Shell/Battle Armour, but the latter are very infrequent and since he needs no setup, Absol is easy to swap out when encountering a physical wall.
Please get back to this series. I'm loving it so much. I love your content. I discovered your videos on accident a year+ ago and immediately watched basically every video I could. You have really rekindled my love for pokemon I never stopped loving it but hadn't played games in a long time but got inspired after seeing your stuff to replay and even found right at the start of the pandemic some cheap used pokemon games that I had not played yet. (White, Y, and sun, and alpha sapphire) before that the last game I had bought and played was pearl. I have not fully played through sun yet I started and did not like it as it was the first non traditional game. Each week I love to look and see if you have put out a new video and like to on days when I can't sleep or relax replay some of the older ones. I was really enjoying this series. Thank you so much for getting me back into pokemon.

Snubull and Granbull are like the pug dogs of Pokemon. ugly but in an adorable way, though Granbull looks more badass and Snubull is the cuter one. Also am I the only one who thinks Grimsnarl is Pokemon's Green Goblin. (The Spiderman villain)
I’m curious to see a Rock then vs now to see if the type has had improvements over the generations, especially with how inaccurate rock move started out as.
Mightyena was the first shiny I ever caught; I've been transferring him throughout the generations ever since (except for Gen 8, because SS got gutted).

+001 If only Gamefreak embraced more into the fangame/romhack community instead of trying to shut them down (and yes I'm aware they can do the latter, calm your jets) they would've definitely had some cool creative ideas for Dark-type gyms. Heck they could've sorta taken a page out of Mikey's book here and made it where the evil team are Fairy-type users and the Gym are Dark type users that are constantly at war with the game's evil team. As a means of subverting the audience's perspective of how they look at light and darkness. There are other ideas I have but those would cause the age rating to bump up a couple notches. Also I like how before Marnie took over as Gym Leader, the Dark-Type gym is the only gym to not Gigantamax. I guess it's Gamefreak's weird way of still trying to Dark-Type the de facto stand-alone type.
If you still have the outfit you should have a team skull grunt interrupt you during the sponsor at some point. You could have grunty boi get jealous thinking you've replaced him or something.
My biggest gripe regarding the Dark type was the fact that in the Johto games, despite the fact that none of the Gen I Pokemon were retyped as Dark, most of the Gen II Dark types could not be found in Johto. In Gold and Silver, your only option for STAB Dark-type moves was Umbreon, whose stats were built for bulk. This was because the other Johto Dark types were only obtainable either in Kanto (Route 7 for Houndour, Routes 7, 16, and 18 for Murkrow) or at and around Mt. Silver (Sneasel and Larvitar). This was changed in Crystal so that Sneasel would be obtained in Ice Path. In HGSS, Sneasel was back to being only obtainable around Mt. Silver, while Murkrow could be found in the Johto Safari Zone. However, you couldn’t use Honchkrow in a Johto play-through since the Dusk Stone could only be obtained after getting the National Dex in the post-game.
Yeah. And the part u mentioned that u couldn't evolved some Gen. 2 or Gen. 1 mons into an Gen. 4 mon kinda makes no sense. Some like Paloswine, Tangela, Lickylicky and others can evolved into an Gen. 4 mon in Johto cause they can learn Ancientpower or other moves that requires to evolved by an Move Tutor.
@@jaretco6423 Exactly. The only Gen 4 Pokemon that you could obtain in HGSS before beating the league were the ones that evolved via level up with a specific move (Ambipom via Double Hit, Lickilicky via Rollout, and Yanmega, Tangrowth, and Mamoswine via AncientPower). If they needed an item to evolve, like Honchkrow or Misdreavus, it was not available until the post game, and if they needed a location to evolve, like Leafeon or Glaceon, you had to trade them in from the Sinnoh games because the locations didn’t exist at all in HGSS.

I might be wrong, but I remember hearing that the dark type never had a gym leaders because of its Japanese name, which is the "evil type". I guess that gym leaders aren't supposed to be evil so it wouldn't make sense to give them that type. Since Piers is the leader of team yell then it makes sense for him to be a dark type specialist. This doesn't explain why elite 4 members can be dark type specialists though.
Honestly, in Sword and Shield, Darkest Lariat makes a great coverage moves for Pokémon who struggle with Ghost or Psychic Types, so Snorlax or especially Machamp, and is a great STAB move for stuff like Krookodile and Grimmsnarl.
BTW parting shot is really useful in competitive most commonly used on incineroar because it's like u turn but it lowers attacking stats instead of damage
Most of Gen 2 and 3 Dark type mons are physical attackers even though all Dark type moves were categorized as special prior to Gen 4... that will never not be weird to me
In my first playthrough of Silver back in the day, I didn't include a Dark-type Pokemon on my team. Instead, I waited to evolve my Eevee into Espeon (still my favorite Eeveelution) until level 30, when it learned Bite. I gave it the Black Glasses, and it was a surprisingly effective attack, despite the lack of STAB. It being a special move on a special attacker definitely helped!
