In today's video, we take a look at the darkFlash Talon, a $30 USD heat sink I bought that proves, beyond reasonable suspicion, that if there are corners to be cut, a manufacturer can find them...
...and cut them...
...with safety scissors.
Links to the heat sinks tested today:
darkFlash Talon: bit.ly/2Ms3wE5
BeQuiet Pure Rock Slim: bit.ly/2P76Bvw
AMD Wraith MAX: bit.ly/31KmSb8
TEST SYSTEM:
Ryzen 5 2600 @ STOCK SETTINGS
Gigabyte Aorus X470 Gaming 7 Wi-Fi
Heat sinks are being tested today!
G.SKill Ripjaws V DDR4 2 x 8 GB 3000 MHz, CL16 (X.M.P. profile buggy)
MSI GeForce RTX 2070 Gaming Z, Afterburner settings: +115 Core, +1 GHz Memory, 100% Core Voltage, 111% Power Limit
Adata XPG SX8200 240 GB nVME SSD
Intel 512 GB 660p nVME SSD
WD Red 3 TB
Antec HCP-850 PSU
Fractal Design Meshify S2
TEST METHODOLOGY:
OCCT V5.2.1, Linpack stress test, run three times, thirty minutes per pass. Results are an average of all three test runs, and represent a temperature Delta over ambient to account for temperature fluctuation.

I have this fan, I actually really like Darkflash talon cooler. But it did seem to run a little hot. Playing Wow Classic my i5 2500 was at 64c. I ran Heaven Benchmark and it said temps were running at 80c although speccy running at the same time said only 45c. Keeping in mind that I used the paste that came with this. I'm going to change it out for fresh and better named brand paste tonight and see what happens. This is no an unlock cpu so I'm not intending overclocking. Seems to do OK? Will see after I change out the paste and reset the cooler. Nice review though very nice job.

Well especially with you running a locked CPU your temps should still be fine. Just be damn careful with that mounting system, it's super suspect IMHO and I feel like removing and re-installing that heat sink too many times is a recipe for not fun times lol. Those Heaven results seem odd since that's not a particularly stressful chore for your CPU tho, so it's good you're changing the paste to something better... The stuff that came with this heat sink did not look great x-p

Hey, thanks for reviewing this cooler. I think there is still something that they can do for this cooler: 1. Get rid of that open fan. Seriously, put a normal 120mm fan there, and that wasted air going to the sides will probably give you a bit more cooling since all that air will be forced downward. 2. Get a serious price cut. In my country, the price of this darkFlash Talon is just a few cents more than the Deep Cool Gammax 400, which will definitely smoke this one. 3. Well, I can't blame you for giving up on the heatsink totally. However, I do like to looks of the original AMD Wraith Cooler (which looks like the Wraith Max/Prism). If I do want to use that cooler on an Intel system, then I can use that ring to mount it :)
@TheManicGeek
@TheManicGeek 4 года назад
I'd honestly be fine with the price as it is right now if they just included a better fan and a MUCH safer mounting system. There's something to be said about a cost-effective alternative to "OEM/ODM" cooling solutions, but if it's not improving upon your "quality of life" in any way then why bother at all? Yeah those open fan frames are bad. If they DID keep the product as-is it'd need to run, like, 15-20 bucks US at most for me to consider it as any sort of valid option... and have a fan that at least didn't look as if it were going to rattle apart after one 30 minute instance of a full system load.

@@TheManicGeek I've mostly owned AMD systems since 2008. I've had an old AM2+ motherboard that had a plastic mounting tabs for the AMD cooler snapped off from the bracket, and that's just from the stock cooler which doesn't have much weight and perhaps less strain on the mounting. It was also only a dual core 2.4 ghz Athlon, so I doubt if the heat was too much, but I'm guessing that over time, the clips that touch the aluminum heatsink gets heated as well, and its edge digs in to that plastic mounting a tiny bit at the time. I don't think that they are hard to mount at all, but just that thought makes me think about longevity of those plastic mounting tabs on the motherboard.

years later, the wraith prism is 66 new after tax and the talon is 28 after tax, if you're a budget builder and you want something cool looking that sets it apart, the talon is a good way to get a quick sale, just don't pair it with an overclocked Ryzen 7 or 9 and you'll be fine lol
@TheManicGeek
@TheManicGeek 10 месяцев назад
Honestly, even at the price, I'd never spend a dime on this heatsink. Since this video was released, there's been a glut of really inexpensive heat sinks in and around this price point that I'd trust further than I could even throw this thing. That said, Wraith Prism at IT'S price is also not great value, for the same reasons mentioned above, including having greater heat dissipation capabilities than either option, a less cringey mounting system, and looks/build quality that exceed either.

@problematic3255 10 месяцев назад
@@TheManicGeek cringy mounting system? I guess that’s a preference thing, tbh the best ones around that price range are the Cryo pc low profile 4heat pipe version for 18 and the ID cooling one for 17-18 if you’re going super budget, mind you I build pc’s with 300 and charge like 350

I have the Darkflash Talon cooler, bought from AliExpress (nder $30.00 CAD), cooling my used Ryzen 5 1600 on a used Asus b350 Prime Plus ATX (CPU and mobo from AliExpress). I have an Antec P182, not a see through side panel. It's keeping the cpu quite cool actually even under load playing Diablo III. My only issue was the mounting pressure needed. The RGB doesn't bother me. It performs well in my case. The mounting kit is is similar to the one that comes with the mounting kit that comes with the famous Snowman cooler. I used my own thermal paste, GD900, when I put my build together in Jan 2021.
@TheManicGeek
@TheManicGeek 3 года назад
Well if it works for your needs then that's what counts. The R5 1600 is thankfully a cool-running chip to begin with so that helps a lot since that heta sink really isn't meant for something that runs super hot or goes under high power-draw situations.
@marcc5768
@marcc5768 3 года назад
@@TheManicGeek I doubt that I would use the darkflash talon cooler on a cpu with 95W TDP. Sadly, there is not the same amount of selection on down draft air coolers as to normal front to back air coolers on the market in Canada. Also, I usually recommend going down draft air coolers for buying Chinese made mobo from AliExpress to keep the VRM temps under control,

Like. Hello, i don't know if you did tests on the vrm but normally this type of cooler lowers the temperature of the vrm as opposed to be!quiet
@TheManicGeek
@TheManicGeek 4 года назад
The difference in VRM temperatures for this test unfortunately wasn't significant enough to warrant ever buying this heat sink over the others tested in this video since the processor temperature itself wasn't as good as in the other tests. That said given the platform I used there is every possibility that the VRM thermals would have been worse with the Be Quiet! solution since the heat sink has to be mounted exhausting air towards the roof of a typical enclosure. You mix that with the wrong air flow configuration in the wrong case and they both become poor choices, just for different reasons.

The thing is I see what they TRIED to do here with this product. Had they moved it up market just a touch there would have been enough money in the budget to produce higher quality components and this thing might have had a chance to be a decent performer with decent build quality... but yes, this is a story of getting what you pay for in the extreme.

Dude, hold your apologies, until you've actually listened to the video yourself, because there is no reverb as far as we (the average viewer) can tell, so you could have saved yourself the lengthy and incredibly sincere apology as well as from revealing that you really care about these things perhaps just a tad too much.

@@TheManicGeek NP, and yeah I figured that you, while making the video could hear it, hence your apology, but I turned up the volume and still couldn't hear it, it actually sounded spot on, so whatever microphone you have, has some good noise cancellation properties. Either way, yeah it's a good idea, even if you hear something during shooting, to hold off on responding to things like that, in the off chance that the microphone is actually doing it's job of noise cancellation, that way, when you go back to edit it, you can let out a sigh of relief that A) There was no reverb and B) you don't have to edit out yourself responding to it. Just saves you a bit of time and worry. That's all.

I see this cpu cool pop up on sale for like 15 bucks some times,, I have a had full of extra 120mm case/pwm fans around, was wondering are the mounting holes fit a slandered 120mm fan ????
@TheManicGeek
@TheManicGeek 5 лет назад
You may have to loosen the screws that hold the fan mounting brackets in place at first, but yes it does fit a standard 120 mm fan. That being said, I still wouldn't grab this heat sink expecting one of your spare fans to suddenly make this thing good.

They also made a not so stuck up version of this heatsink without the black painting and ugly fan on top of it. i.ebayimg.com/images/g/ZU4AAOSwEDBdYPqR/s-l1600.jpg But it also comes with the cheap version of the mounting bracket and not the better one, with the backplate.
