Old-school no-bullshit game, yes please. I'll be buying. As I understand it, this game had much less of a budget than Darksiders 2 so I'm not surprised it has a reduced scope for the game overall, but it doesn't put me off.
Yeah it's a miracle that the game even got made. I pre ordered the deluxe edition to show my support in hopes of getting the 4th game and with a bigger budget
JumPInfectioN its more like you get what you paid for. The game is a finished product and there’s no bullshit like today’s modern games like microtransactions and such (it’s kind of funny to see this as the representation of old school no bullshit games...times changed). (Sorry for bad grammar)
@@luisgustavo7188 youll find that its only the big titles that do that. Theres loads of "no bullshit games" coming out that youre just not paying attention to.
@@henryhaynes9635 In the video game industry, AAA (pronounced "triple A") or Triple-A is a classification term used for games with the highest development budgets and levels of promotion. A title considered to be AAA is therefore expected to be a high quality game or to be among the year's bestsellers.
@John Gooch You should buy the game for the reasons you think are worth it. I can buy a pile of shit if i want to. Most of the times, we buy useless shit just for curiosity anyway.
When the series was first announced they set up for it to have 5 games. 1 for each horseman, and one with all the horsemen as a finale. Darksiders 4 would follow Strife and then a fifth entry would have all of them.
Feels like a 7/10, like its predecessors. The reviews seem to be averaging out that way, too. This is the one series that actually needs all the support it can get to exist, so I'm ok with overlooking some technical glitches and paying full price for a game for the first time since The Witcher 3. THQ Nordic is also releasing this DRM-free on GOG, which is another move I want to support with my money.
i agree,i bought this game to support the series. i knew it wasn't going to be as good as the first two but i want to see this series finished out as i loved the first two games
I think developers had to sacrifice a lot to get this game out. Darksiders II was a much bigger game than the original, and third iteration feels like a step back in comparison. Probably budget and time constraints.
@Dr. Loomis I just finished one and onto 2. It seems wayyy bigger but less choreographed (in a bad way). The combat is more fluid though these puzzles are killing me. They're more complex, but not really more challenging. So I just die when the controls dont do what I want them to do (oh shit 20 degrees in the wrong direction 😒). Story seems cool tho
Obo there are options for this in a bunch of games and I always seem to go towards the 4k mode. Especially recently with shadow of the tomb raider and god of war.
Literally every other game has a 4k support problem. The reason people don't switch to 4k is not because of money issue, they just don't want to be one of those chumps who cry on forums every time a game fails to deliver the 4k / HDR.
I do have to say, out of all the gaming channel I watch at times, your ability to breakdown games, give your opinion during, is one of the best all around and in my opinion, and last but certainly not least, have one of the best track records when describing all aspects of each game. You are a huge resource for me when I am trying to expand and play games that normally might be of my comfort zone. Not to mention, waste money on buying a game I might be excited about at first, but decide to wait and purchase when on sale. Can’t tell you how many times I would of been pisses, throwing my controller, if I would of bought a game full price instead listening and wait for a sale. Sorry for the long post, but I just wanted to let you know what you do really does contribute in such of a positive way, especially to this old guy who is now disabled due to my job as a firefighter.
I don't think most of us expected it to be better than the first two anyways, given all unfortunate shit that went on with the developers. I'm personally just glad they're continuing the series. Gonna buy this game gotta support the developers so they can make Darksiders 4 really good.
@@thanoskitsos5710 Nah, during a Q&A someone said that it would be cool if there was a 5th game where you could play as all of the horsemen and one of the devs jokingly responded that it would be cool and that they should do it. So people are (mistakenly) taking it as a guarantee.
This review just confirmed all my fears about the game. So even tough the first 2 games are among my favourites - played trough them several times - I'll wait for a 50% deal on this one. Hopefully by then most of the bugs will be fixed.
@@Art0r1a yea bro I fully understand your concern while im still excited for this and even brought the collector's edition seeing as though the darksiders 2 is one of my all time fav action RPGs, I feel like so much of what made the darksiders franchise special has been cut short in this game especially weeks before release hearing it's only a 15 hour experience kinda did bother me. Kinda disappointing hearing that so much of what made darksiders special isn't in ds3 but I def am still excited to play for myself.
Giggling Stoner exactly, they DONT make them like this anymore. Now it’s mostly a bunch of cash grabs, micro transaction filled, buggy, unfinished, etc bunch of crap games. This is nice and I’m enjoying it
@@GigglingStoners Its not about a genre but THQ Nordic is the last AA publisher on the market - everything else is either full indie or AAA nowadays. Haitan Xu It does really show that budget = quality which third one lacked the most but from other side devs said even if this one will flop they won't have an problem to stay afloat and even make 4th one so having relatively small budget can pay off.
Not even kidding when I say that I don't buy over 80% of the games I have until ACG reviews it since I know this guy will deliver the facts, won't bullshit us due to a payoff, has no political agenda and I like the kid and how he built his channel. Long story short, this is (by far) the best reviewer for games. Keep it up and thanks.
Agreed. Although lately he's been giving around the same score as other reviewers. The end score doesn't really matter though, as he reviews the game with pros and cons in each section. So you can pretty much make up your own mind.
Having played for about 20-odd hours, I reached the underwater level Karak was talking about. It's gorgeous. Most of the game is, really, although the insect warrens can get a bit repetitive. This game reminds me most of the original Soul Reaver- a mostly empty, layered world with difficult combat and few things to collect, but those few things can make a HUGE difference. After unlocking each new Hollow, you can spend at least an hour backtracking to all the areas that were gated off by that power, collecting either crafting supplies, or hidden weapon enhancements- and those can make a huge difference, especially if upgraded properly. Vulgrim actually sells an item that allows you to start regenerating health from basically the beginning of the game- not a feature that existed in either of the previous games until about 2/3s in... The progression system isn't deep, but your build and playstyle is important. There are a few minibosses, and these can also be fun. The first one you can find, Flame Warden is a being of fire-- so if you attack him with your Flame Hollow, he'll laugh at you- but once I came back with a different power set, the battle was manageable. Seriously, the levelling up numbers don't mean look like much... but once you hit level 20+, those enemies in the first areas DO become basic trash mobs, just like in the prior games. Yeah, hard-hitting, high HP enemies still hit like a Mack truck, and doing the "evade, go into bullet-time, do the arcane counter" thing is a must for them- but once Fury can take a few hits, it's easy to eliminate all the trash, leaving her one on one with the bigger enemies- and those fights can look as spectacular as the prior games, which also had certain enemy types that'd hit hard up until endgame. I haven't finished the game yet, but I'm guessing it may take me about 35 hours for one run- and that's because I backtrack and explore and try to map out all the shortcuts, not because I'm purposefully "grinding"- the amount of souls the game throws at you progressively increases- possibly because of the bonuses from the enhancements I'm using, but I have about 100k worth of "unopened soul jar" items.... I could probably buy my way all the way to level 50 right now (I'm in the low 40s), but I don't see the point. Just like in DSII, I re-played it before this came out, and half-way through NG+ on Apocalyptic, 60 hours of play , Death has over a million gold.... these games are not difficult to become OP, if you pay attention to the game's systems.
@@jodyboles8208 I would prefer if it was like injustice in the sense you play as each individual hoursmen as they get their own chapter to focus on the hoursmen themself
There was some legit " Holy shit What??? " moments in Darksiders 3. Tons of fanservice and twists I legit didn't see coming. It's not perfect but overall I liked the game. I was totally entertained especially to see some more darksiders lore. Not to mention the developers went through some shit to get the game out There, gotta support these guys.
I learned my lesson along time ago to try things out for myself before I say no to a game. I remember watching all the bad reviews on Castlevania lords of shadow 2. I ended up playing it a couple years ago and it’s one of the best action games I’ve ever played. I even think it’s better than the first. That being said I really like the first 2 Darksiders games. The second game being my favorite. So I’m going to buy this day 1. Also to whoever is reading this try out a game called Kingdoms of Amalur.
I had it preordered and have been enjoying my time with it. My two big complaints is that they did away with the prior games visual language for climbing and so at the start I found myself trying to grab onto sections of the wall or a ledge and I couldn't because there is no wall climbing, at least not until you get that power apparently. My other big issue with the game is the checkpointing. I do not like the rogue-like element of the game where you die and lose all your money unless you can get back to where you died, and even then I am not certain you get it all back. But otherwise its as interesting a game as the others. It feels like a inbetween game in terms of size and gameplay style.
Shayne's World tell me about it, I’m currently in the hollows and I’m having to fight the giant fire dude for the third time, there’s no fucking saving system or anything
@@Twigg4075 I feel ya man, I've been playing Nioh; and though it is really good with save points at times... It can be incredibly punishing in areas you have to progress through, it can make the game feel almost not fun, ALMOST. You either learn how every specific mob works or you will sit there and get nowhere.
It's a 7.5/8 over 10. Combat is too much BB mixed with Bayonetta. It's just... right there. It's right there but it can never pass that line and come to greatness. DS1 was great at story telling and atmosphere while DS2 combat and exploration with dungeon. DS3,, ehhh it's just sit right in the middle of so many things it's so hard to speak what great about it. It's like the black sheep of Darksouls, Darksiders, DMC,Nioh and Bayonetta together. "It's just there". Potential wasted.
I just finished it in 27 hours on Apocalyptic difficulty and i absolutely loved it. I havent felt this stressed (in a good way) from dying and losing all of my progress and souls since god of war 4 released. The ending was redeeming for our heroine since from the very beginning we arent sure whether she is good or bad. We like her of course but her morals are somewhat unknown. SO the end fits her well. The fact that we are slapped in the face with Strife in the end leads me to believe there will be a fourth game coming for us. The difficulty was beautiful and the progression feel of leveling up and upgrading your enchants and weapons was spot on. Im a huge Darksiders fan and i have replayed the last 2 games 4+ times each. I highly recommend if for any hack and slash fan or just someone who want to feel challanged by the difficulty.
As always another stellar in depth review from ACG and team. Thank you so much for the quality and depth you do your reviews in :). I hope you and your team Karnak had a good Thanksgiving. An thank you to your patrons who allow you to do this full time and keep your channel independent. It is good to see games like this come out that are done out of love of the genre and series.
@@TheBassAvenger this makes me remember how the darksiders 2 rpg elements weren't that fun, I got destroyed by him at first, then I camr back with an OP build and... it was easy af...
For me the most important aspect of a Darksiders (II) sequel is the story and whether or not that warrants another sequel. The end of the first Darksiders promises more to come after this one and I really want to see the conclusion to the overall story. As someone who owns the regular and Warmastered/Deathinitive editions on several systems as well as the novel by Ari Marmell, I will definitely buy this game very soon but I would've loved to learn more about how well the story is realized from this video. Although some of it is hinted at/implied by the "fanservice" and "voice acting" remarks, I think it could've been a bit more clear. Other than that great video. What I really love about this series (Buy, Wait for Sale, Rent, Never Touch?) is that these videos always feel like they're coming from a 99.999% neutral position without any biases, which is extremely professional! Keep 'em coming!
Level design is more sophisticated than you're giving it credit for. Also, the platforming issues you had, I don't know if that's really an issue for most players. Especially once you get the flame hollow. Also, the metroidvania inspired design makes exploration key to victory as you'll spend most of your time exploring finding objects that will help you upgrade your weapons. One of the best parts of this series, that a lot of reviewers seem to be having trouble with, is its flexibility in gameplay design. Each game has a different horseman that plays a different way. Then the devs choose a gameplay style to match that horseman. Honestly, if Darksiders 4 is a Vanquish style third person shooter, that would be the ideal choice.
@@hess1912 Same, wat Karak cannot understand is that not all things can be broken down in price tag worth...so if its cheap and shit games like Surfing in water he would recommend to those who never want or done surfing in water game but diss evilwithin2 and darksiders3 lol Might save that Surfing game cash for DS3
I’d highly recommend picking up the first two. They’re often on sale for $5-$10 and they provide a good amount of content. It seems like reviews for the first two are better than this one, but I’m still excited for it none the less.
Haven't played this one yet, but the first Darksiders was excellent. War was a right badass and the world was captivating. I didn't really like the inclusion of "loot" in Darksiders 2, but still enjoyed it. Not as much as the first one though.
You should definitely try the other 2. They are great, and both are different enough from eachother that they feel fresh even playing one right after the other.
I did expect this from darksiders 3 somewhat, but I thought they would nail it in the puzzle and exploration department. Welp, the deciding factor for me was just that, the puzzles and exploration. Maybe I'll pick it up down the line when it's 40-50% off and most of its bugs are patched out but most likely not. Great informative review as always.
2018 has to be the best year in a long time for gaming at least 12 games came out that's a must buy. To the point where i spent so much on the collectors edition for most of them
I'm on the camp of supporting this dev team to see the series wrap up. I had a blast with the first 2 (specially part 2) and I'm def dropping a few bucks in the holiday season for the series... If not for the fun times, put of sheer principle to support passionate dev teams that want to deliver a good and complete product.
As much as i love darksiders 1 and 2, so far 3 has been great. I had combat gripes tell i found out they are there. With that being said i feel like a lot of people are putting 1 and 2,.*especially 2* on a pedestal. 2 was and is an extremely flawed and underdeveloped game. The second half was extremely rushed. The combat is choppy and not nearly as fluid as 3. Part 1 was also choppy..puzzles...when were the puzzles in darksiders hard? I also feel the puzzles in 3 feel wayy more organic. Expropriation in DS1 was nonexistent and had no rpg elements. DS2 whole thing was the opposite. And so in DS3 they clearly were going for a mix of DS1 and dark souls1, metroidvania. With combat being the most challenging its ever been. All 4 games are supposed to be different. Seems most people just wanted a DS 2.1 remake. :/ that always been a curse with 3rd installments. By that point the fanbase has no idea what they want. And totally disregards the whole idea behind the 3rd game. Replaced with nostalgia goggles.
As a fan, personally I want the combat to be more fast & "hardcore action" style focus on combos than any previous games, like a mix of Bayonetta series + Castlevania LOS series (mainly with the whip-like weapon). This is totally detrimental to the image of the game as we see it. As the game turn out, now everybody gonna called it dark souls rip off, which isn't true at all. Even so called a "fan" like Jim Sterling brutalized the game as "dark souls rip off" & complaining about no loot system like Darksiders II. Such a complete ignorance could definitely ruin this game sales for an already such a niche title. This game definitely in odds with everyone, both fans & mainstream.
@@crozraven Imagine the Chosen Undead or the Lord of Shadows crawling through air ducts. Absolutely laughable. When I look at this game's level design I just see the grids... too many 90 degree angles and 45 degree slopes, too plainly laid out and not organic enough. I like it for about $20. Oh and you nailed with the Castlevania mention. I was looking for some sort of combat meter that would press the action from fight to fight.
I really think only the final third of darksiders 2 was rushed, everything until you go to earth is fine, but heaven and hell realms were extremely rushed, even though they were amazing areas. Just wish darksiders 4 lends up with a high budget
Thats my annoyance though, alot of people are coming at this like it's a surprise. At this point everyone who's intrested in these games should know what they are getting into. What hurts games, not just this one in general is the fact that peoples imaginations and *for lack of a better word* fanfic get in the way of appreciating whats there. It's a disservice to the work done. Especially for a series that was so close to not existing. All 3 games are flawed on so many levels. But we love these games becouse of the charm and love put into them, yet becouse game 3 is not like game 2 it gets hate even though we know damn well the games a are gonna be different. These are not AAA titles. I do see improvements over the last 2 games. That's good enough for me. Im happy this game exists.
I must say that Darksiders 2 is still my favorite of them all with the first one taking a second place right behind it. This one tries to be great at times but its just missing that special something. That said, i still plan to enjoy the crap out of it for at least a couple of playthroughs as i did with the previous ones
Nice to come across a reviewer with morals and shows they work hard with their reviews, earned yourself a subscriber. I am still planning on buying this game though haven't decided if I want to wait and buy it for PS4 or get it now for PC. The last two I got for PS3. Though if I get a PS4 eventually I will need at least a few games for it to justify it so idk yet. But I am glad they kept going with the series after being bought up by a different company. Sucks it's not as polished as it could be but hey. I really liked the story and this one looks interesting. Also can't wait for a 4 as well.
I knew it is for sale but I am a Darksiders fan but I feel like the environment and puzzle grievances this game has is because of budget and deadline issues. I am sure that THQ Nordic could not give the budget that Darksiders 2 had. Watching a documentary on Gunfire games also helped me tempered my expectations as it might be Ex Vigil employees but there are many new ones also and previous key people are not here anymore. More impressed by what they present right now with the budget and deadline they were given pretty sure many things were left behind in the idea or cutting department. I wish this game gets a boost in the budget for the next game but that is a very slim hope but this should be a Title for THQ Nordic as it can possible help them push into AAA gaming scene but even they need to invest money in the game get more than great return.
even though this will probubly go on sale by christmas I want to buy this day one just so I can see at least two more darksiders ( one with the 4th horseman and one with all of them playable).
Adam K mmmmmmm But Darksiders came out before dark souls though. Unless you mean demon souls? But even then this type of game has been out before that too soooo que pasa homie
It feels like Darksiders has not only slipped in quality but also in the number of people actually caring that it was released. I guess unless you're Rockstar, waiting six-plus years between franchise entries isn't a great idea.
This game is available in my country for INR 2165. That is roughly 30$. So I feel this game is worth playing at that price. The only turn off for me might be crashes. Everything else is good! And as usual, great review by ACG :)
Thanks Karak. While I enjoyed the previous two games; I wasn't sure if this was a 'must buy' or not. 'Wait for a sale' definitely eases the ongoing Holiday burden on my wallet. 🤘
It's better off for him not to review it. Otherwise he would have to tread a fine line between being overly critical and Bethesda stops sending early review copies and not critical enough and the have his credibility questioned
If you know the first two and have played them. Also if you have paid attention to Fury’s armor she’s a functional rework of War, which makes me sad. Joe Madeira had a great impact on the game and was one of the main deciding factors that made the game what they were.
Hey bro, put up an ad. You do some really good content and I really enjoy it. I wish I could support you on patreon, sadly I cannot. I am sure there are plenty of people who dont mind an ad with really high quality content.
It's a great game people, buy it and support it. We need a fourth game. Don't let the people whining about a little challenge stop you from buying it. Great story, great game.
@@xyfghter99 I don't even count the "throw your axe at the glowing thing" a puzzle, but what's worse in that game is the "platforming". Nobody complained about that in that game though
always brutally honest and that's what I like about these videos. Darksiders for me has always been a guilty pleasure. I see the technical and graphical short comings and get annoyed at some of the dungeons designs but this game always manages to win my forgiveness each and every time with it's joe mad art style, characters and just the world itself.
What I can say is that this game is bloody impressive when THQ went down I thought I would never see another darksiders but then this came out and it looks to be roughly as good as the others with a few more rough edges but thats fine. Its like having a candy thats cracked. It still tastes good and it still looks just as satisfying as the other games so I will most definitely give it a buy
Actually it was promoted A LOT. at least in my filterbubble ;) not Spiderman dimensions of course but I've seen a lot of ads and trailers over the last couple of weeks.
I've seen a lot of marketing, and also specials that had all 3 included etc. I think its more of a niche game, and THQnordic hasn't got the money to out-market Bugthesda/Fallout 76 or Take2/RDR2
I've played way too many open world games the last few years so a more linear experience is very welcome lately + it looks kind of old school so i might buy it.
Less exploration then the first.. damn. And the last commercial trailer showed her ride on her horse through a huge desert .. that killed my hype in a second :(
@@BenjiPrice502 I think his problem is that they released a trailer with fury riding her horse but that never happens in the game since the horse dies within 5 minutes of being introduced

I didn't realise the game was out or close to release already. A pleasant return of a classic series I would say. The stylised art style is still as cool as ever. Great to see Darksiders back :) I'll be picking this up at some point.
I do like how the camera sticks to the character in this game, in Shadow of the Tomb Raider the camera would bounce around anytime you got close to something
“ like having a fertility clinic in a down town slum, you don’t know where the products came from “ ahaha excellent brethren I was chuckling away there, great review as always good sir.
This was honestly 99% accurate, as a pretty diehard darksiders fan I can't really find any points to downright disagree on, the only thing I would say is that thq and thq Nordic went out of their way in each game to drastically change the gameplay to mirror sections of specific genres Ds1: legend of Zelda style dungeon crawler/open world Ds2: open world (by most definitions of the time) rpg Ds3: souls games style dungeon crawler Ds4: by the looks of it, it will be a mix between diablo style movement and worlds, and a combat system that still feels like darksiders
I was worried for a moment that we wouldn't get to see this game, but I am happy to know its out. I played Darksiders 2 first and didnt know what I was getting into, but I liked the art style, the puzzles and combat; it felt to me like a mix of Diablo meets Zelda in terms of game-play.
really like it. its clear they had budget limitations but its so much more similar to DS1 than 2. i think if you like the franchise you will really like the game. i love the franchise and even though i belive this game will be in the bargain sale bin at the end of the year i will buy it full price for the developers because i cant beleive this game even exists after DS2 bombed. no one bought it. Keep the franchise alive people. DS2 is still the best one
This is why I hate day one reviews. Every game nowadays has bugs when it’s released. These are usually fixed within the first week. Unless you are Rocksteady. I have played all of the Darksiders games and each game played different based on the character. War didn’t fight like Death and Fury is different then both. I just watched a number of reviews who say the level design is great. As Gunship games said, it’s basically one big dungeon. I’ll play this one and can’t wait to see what they do with Strife. It’s a buy at full price. I’ll get the physical copy.
that whip attacks are just too short & slow imo. Basically the same as using a heavy sword. Compare to CLOS series where the whip weapon attacks has the longest melee range & AoE attacks aside from sword & gauntlets. I guess Death still the fastest & most powerful ones.
@@justinduck2953 Yeah, according to the lore itself. Death is definitely the most powerful, while War the most honorable, Fury as the most unpredictable and enigmatic (also sassy I guess?!?!). Strife is definitely the most mysterious one as his guns lying around on earth & other realm.
ACG = instant click! Looking forward to playing this game eventually. The first two games set the bar really high in the fun factor and nostalgia factor.
Acg is amazing he is the only person I can trust to actually make a good review. Every other review channel is either extremely bias or gets paid to make a good review about a bad game
