Darren Walker speaks on the need for courageous leadership, the importance of investing in hope, mastering compartmentalization as a key to success, and how he copes with the sudden passing of his husband.
Darren Walker is president of the Ford Foundation, a $16 billion international social justice philanthropy. He is a member of the Reimagining New York Commission and co-chair of NYC Census 2020. He chaired the philanthropy committee that brought a resolution to the city of Detroit’s historic bankruptcy. Under his leadership, the Ford Foundation became the first non-profit in US history to issue a $1 billion designated social bond in US capital markets for proceeds to strengthen and stabilize non-profit organizations in the wake of COVID-19. Walker grew up in Texas, and was a part of the inaugural class of the Head Start program.

How can I be sure that the agent that I am working with actually does work for the Ford foundation and is not someone performing a scam. I’m a 74 y/o, 100% disabled veteran. I need to rather quickly make certain what is being offered to me as a Grant is truly above board and not just a person using the foundations name in order to rip me off. she is said we have to finalize this this morning first thing. I just learned about this program late yesterday afternoon I feel like I’m being rushed To make a hasty decision, I asked for a little time to satisfy my fears, and was informed it wasn’t really possible. Please, I need your help.

Courageous leadership is not appreciated in the government, once you embark on injustices ⚖️ and inequality fight, you became a loner, lose support from friends and coworkers.

The best bridge building politicians who have reached across the isle have been ousted leaving the name calling divisive politicians. Our country is not better for it.

I appreciate this man, but his lack of energy makes it hard to digest anything he's saying. I'm halfway thru, and I'm struggling paying attention unlike James' interview that was absolutely riveting. Sometimes, people aren't connected like that. He didn't give us answers he just spoke about problems.

I have a problem with the word inequality (or equality) used vaguely like people do. Like, I am taller than you, what are we going to do about "this inequality". Maybe you feel frustrated with your height, you feel weak, embarrassed. You're mocked for being too short... you're so short people trip over you at the subway or walking on the street. Women are not attracted to you because you're too short, you're like a toy to most of them, they even find you cute, because you remind them of their teddy bear and other plush toys. I mean... some people do feel that way. But I am not as tall as NBA players... I don't have the skills of Michael Jordan or Kobe Bryant, I'm shorter, weaker, less talented and much poorer than 99,99% of NBA players. I also feel robbed when I see rappers with Bentleys and diamond rings and mansions. I feel very oppressed by them and their whole posse, with bodyguards with semi-automatic weapons, and expensive lawyers, and even hitmen... How would we correct *these types of inequality* ?

You choose to whom you give your attention, that is your control over that inequality. A rapper without an audience doesn’t have all those things. I respect the skills of linguistic rappers, the skills of excellent NBA players, but most importantly I only admire them if their actions off the stage/court is admirable. The athletes I admire most are those who persevered through inequality (often from birth) and didn’t let those things hinder them. They may never go down in history as the greatest, but they did the best they could with the hand they were dealt. Greatness to me is triumph despite adversity not in its absence. Someone, somewhere, at sometime had it much worse than you, pay them homage and do the best you can at what you can that you feel is meaningful and nothing else matters. If you find admirable traits of someone, don’t envy them, emulate those traits into your life and you can share in it’s fruit. Love, random stranger on the internet.
