@@tigersgedanken1246 that's not exactly true. The book was written by Lothar-Günther Buchheim who was a war correspondent during WW2 and not a submariner. The character of Leutnant Werner is based upon him. Like Werner in the movie, he was onboard of German submarines, but not as a member of the crew, but as a war correspondent.

@@tvncgn I'm now reading the book after having seen the movie a few times. In the book, Bucheim stood bridge watches; though not a submariner or member of the crew, he did things aboard the sub besides being a mere correspondent.

The u-boat pens you see in the film, in France, are the REAL u-boat pens from the war. That's why it looks so realistic :)

But they only used one pen for filming. They shot different scenes and cut them together so it looked like it was one continuous shot.

As a legend goes, the late Otto Sander, who played Thomsen, wasn't just acting to be drunk in the scene at the beginning, he was actually really plastered. He wasn't faking it but still nailed his scene the professional he was.

Best WWII movie ever. Such a respect for the director Wolfgang Petersen. He tried to reflect the absolute madness of war. I could watch this movie 5 x over in a row on my 135 inch projection screen with all surround.

This is a marvel! A gem! The "Man overboard" Scene was somehow real: One of the guys sliped while filming and fell down near the aft part of the tower while shooting a "Stormy Weather" part.

The actor falling over board was an accident. Someone shouted "man over board" out of reflex. At first Wolfgang Petersen did not realise it was an accident and wanted the scene redone but then he saw that Jan Fedder really got injured and he kept it. He also changed the script that the actor stayed more in bed in his role.

It was originally made as a six part tv series. Watching all six one after another gives you more than eight hours. There is even a DVD-Cut of with six hours. The long times they just waited and got more and more mental are even better this way. Absolute love it.

Out of 40,000 German u-boat crew during ww2, 30,000 never made it home. That is a terrifying figure. Basically, if you were serving on a uboat you only had a 25% chance of surviving the war.

And many of those who survived had massive psychological problems. Of course, these soldiers were never shown, and certainly not during the Nazi era. The incident with “John the Ghost” was almost a piece of cake compared to that. Boats on which more than 220 depth charges were dropped and other "nice" things. If you became the target of a so-called “killer group,” your own death was almost certain. Things were no different for the crews of the Allied freighters. Instead of depth charges, it was German torpedoes. Fire, explosions and everything “nice” there is. Lifeboats with skeletal people, who were only found months after their ships were sunk.

The author of the novel, Lothar G Buchheim, was a reporter on a submarine, like Lieutenant Werner, and has incorporated his experiences and those of other reporters into the novel.

In Bremerhaven is a way more advanced type XXI (21) submarine, the "Wilhelm Bauer". It is also one of the few German submarines to have a name, because of its history. It got sunk by its crew at the end of WW2 as U 2540 and was then raised again and repaired, to serve as training submarine for the newly founded West German Navy until 1980. The type XXI is pretty much the ancestor of all modern submarines, since all other Navys studied them and incorporated the advanced technology in their own ships or simply copied the design. Even the USA learned a lot from it, despite having had very powerful submarines of their own and based their GUPPY updates on this.

The book was written by a "journalist" who was basically doing what the journalist in the story does. That gave him lots of stories to write a really good book (the depravity at the start and all the "games" are not exaggerated ... but many rough "jokes" are softened in the translation of the subtitles).

Buchheim was a war correspondent, as portrayed here by Grönermeyer as the fictional Lt. Werner. Although he authored factual accounts, "Das Boot" is a semi-fictional novelisation of his sortie aboard U-96. He was not at all happy with the finished film, and criticised the over the top action.

@@NuGanjaTron The movie got very bad critics when it came out and Bucheim was just afraid the critics would target him and his book too, so he did the opportunistic move to citicise the movie too, to bring himself out of the line of fire.

Das boot explains exactly navy culture. Im in the Navy but im surface fleet (skimmer) and submariners (bubblehead) is seen as a different culture, more close-knit, however the comradery and the both love and hate at the same time for the ship/boat is accurate. The way they crew interact with each other is very accurate. Just the same as the army, if you have never done a 9 month tour away or a 2 year draft you just wont understand how close you get with people.

I only went to base camp for 45 days and the bond felt pretty deep. I can’t even begin to imagine 9 months or 2 years under such stressful high stake circumstances

You learn alot about people quick, the compartments are so small you see people shower, getting changed, their habbits when they are alone, you are around people 24/7. so you learn more about them in a month than your best friend

If you're ever in Munich, Germany, you can visit Bavaria Filmstadt, where you can actually walk through the life-sized U-boat prop that they built for this film. It really gives you a feeling how cramped and claustrophobic the conditions were!

The first successful submarine was the CSS Hunley. Fought against the Union in Charleston harbor. 'Merica! Sank their target, but the blowback from the exploding torpedo (on a spar) killed them too ;-(

You can actually visit this submarine. Not many were captured intact. Nearly all of them have been cut up for scrap with only bits and pieces remaining in museum displays. The lone exception is the U505 on display at the Griffin Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago. It has been kept as it was while in operation. The crew that constructed the sets for the miniseries and the movie went there and took enough measurements and photos to duplicate the interior practically down to the last bolt and rivet.

Best War Movie ever made.... so realistic and you suffer with the crew. The other Submarine they met was captained by the drunk guy from the Bar Scene (Phillip Thomsen). You could also react the German Movies "Stalingrad" or "Die Wannsee Konferenz". The last on is scary on another lever, because it's about the planning of the Holocaust.

This is probably the best submarine movie ever made, and probably one of the best war movies ever made in general. The only mistake in the whole movie is the lorry in the scene at 4:52. When it comes to your commentary: Germans didnt invent submarines. Submarines were invented (the first prototypes) during American civil war, some 80 years before WW2. But they werent really a game changers. And as with all weapons ever invented, there were countermeasures to them. Germany however successfully practices the strategy of using great numbers of submarines to attack cargo ships, in order to starve the Great Britain, which had such a huge fleet that it didnt allow Germans to use surface vessels.

I don't know for the outside, but for the inside they used actual ancient UBOAT (95% sure). But the setup for the outside of the boathouse is real. We have one in Bordeaux.

Thank you for the reaction to the (imo) best German movie of all times! Sadly, the subtitles are not very good, there are some grave errors.. but it is still way better than the dubbed version, so good, you chose this one. I live in Kiel, a naval port town in Northern Germany, where there is the last existing type of this submarine put ashore as museum. Nowadays, we have a memorial here, for ALL sailors who died on the sea, no matter what nation. Modern submarines are still built in my town, some of them sold to Egypt too, if I am not mistaken ;) absolutely earned my follow. Greetings from Germany🙂

ps: fun facts from the production.. the actors were told to stay out of the sun and to not shave, so they would look like been on sea for months.. also, in the scene where one man got hurt in heavy seas, he REALLY did... they pushed heavy waves over the model sub, and the actor really fell... they decided to keep it

This isn't the correct subtitled version. This is more like they used the auto-translate or closed caption version. It spells out ambient sounds, something the orginal hardcoded version does not do. That could explain translation errors.

U-boat is shorthand for "unterseeboot"- The German word for submarine. The Germans didn't invent the submarine, but they were the first to develop them into practical weapons of war, and to deploy them in large numbers. The first ancestor of the submarine was a one-man submersible named the Turtle, and was used- not all that successfully- against the British during the American Revolution. And speaking of the British- a little background on the "U-boat cocktail"; in the days of wooden ships, they discovered that the way to keep sailors from getting scurvy was to make sure they had plenty of citrus fruit (which is how the English came to be called "limeys")

I wish my dad didn't live so far away so I could watch movies with him too like this. This channel should have more subscribers!! Keep it up though and at some point the algorithm will pick up on you and you will grow rapidly. Find a way to get a microphone closer to your dad so we can hear him better. It would help a lot, trust me on this. Spend the money to get your sound quality better for you and your dad and it will pay off!!

In my hometown Bremerhaven we have museum "Deutsches Schifffahrtsmuseum". Outside in the little harbour is an old submarine from 1945 you can walk through. It's so tight in there. Unbelieveable that man can stay there for weeks and longer.

A few years back I accidentally met Erwin Leder who played Johann, in a Bar in Austria. At some point, he wanted to fight, me, over a political discussion we had. But I didn't go for it, he was just a bit drunk and got hot-headed. That's all. He apologised the next day when we accidentally met each other on the street again, though.

I love the movie and this reaction. Only commenting to correct that the Germans didn’t invent the submarine, they were just scarily effective in using them. The first time a ship was sunk by a submarine in combat was during the America Civil War in 1863. That was a terrifying short range human powered craft and the crew didn’t make it back alive. Submariners earn their respect. I wouldn’t want to do it.

You should watch a making off. This was rly filmed in france with boat replicas in different sizes. One (you see it driving out and in of the harbour for example) was original scale but it couldn't dive.

3:24 I like how impressed you were with Otto Sander's performance as the wasted Capt. Thomsen. Sander had indeed seen a lot of shit and had a serious alcohol problem on and off screen. He was perfect for the role as he already came fully prepared to the set, smashed out of his skull! Yes, he _was_ a good actor; sadly he passed away some 10 years ago... ☹ Too bad you omitted his best line: "I am NOT in ze Kondition to F**k!"

While the Germans didn't invent the sub, they had the most use for the concept. Surrounded by naval powers that out-did them, the submarine was their only hope for ever managing to achieve a naval blockade of England/France. In the end, however, they had too few, and the allies eventually cancelled out the initial technological advantage, by inventing/improving, radar, sonar and hydrophones. The irony was that Nazi Germany was too focused on rebuilding it's surface fleet, and they had very few and very small costal U-boats at the outbreak of WW2.

U-Boat just means unterseeboot...which is just the German word for "submarine"...and the invention of submarines and submersibles is complicated, but the Germans most definitely did not invent them. The Germans were the first to make the submarine a truly threatening military weapon, and had excellent submarine technology in both World Wars, but they did not invent the submarine.💯

No the British made the e-class submarine during world war one. So no the Germans were'nt the first maybe jointly making them a threatenly military weopon. In WW2 The T-class Royal navy submarines were extremely capable submarines but didn't really have to used because the our dominant surface fleet preventing their merchant navy from operating.In WW2 The British submarines succeeded in sinking 12 German U-boats, for the loss of 4 of their own (P-615, Spearfish, Thristle and Doris) to U-boats. Facts. But only 10,000 German submariners returned from 40,000 should all earn our respect, which is a tragedy we should all think about to some extent.

@@Photonface The German attempt to use subs to blockade the British Isles was the first time in history that the world became really aware of submarines. And even though they failed, that UBoat War in the Atlantic in WW1 was the first time people saw the submarine as a real threatening weapon, as opposed to a scout or just a curiosity. I did not say the Germans made the best subs in WW1, but the British did not build several hundred subs to try and blockade Germany, they had their surface fleet for that. So even if the Brits did make the best sub in WW1, they did not use them in a way that was really public and menacing, like the hundreds of German U-Boats sinking ships in the Atlantic did.

@@jacquestricatel7055 Earlier single examples of subs do not count as "effective" weapons in the way that the first German U-Boat campaign of WWI was. That is why I do not mention the Turtle or the Hunley either...nobody built a fleet of Turtles or Hunleys or either of those that you mentioned.

It's debatable who really invented the submarine, there have been many attempts and concepts since antiquity. But in the early 1940s, German ones were the best. The late war type XXI didn't see much action, but was the development basis for many later cold war submarines around the world.

Tbh i doubt if german subs were the best. We had the most and used them the most efficiently, since our enemy was real close. But japanese and american subs were larger, faster, longer range, with radar for the american ones and spotter planes on the japanese ones. but they had to cross the pacific to do something.

It's one amazing film shoeing us what they ha to do in fighting us English and American ships out there on the sea. A hard life. I also love hearing it in German. But you can change it to English if you want.

The guy who wrote the book is responsible for the series as it is. He got the first (US) Regisseur fired and replaced by a German. He wanted the Germans to be Portrait as Humans and not as the usual US Propaganda Nazis.

Germans didnt invent submarines ... the first one was from the american civil war ... with a bunch of people cranking an axle for propulsion ... and an explosive at the tip of a spear at the bow, which they were supposed to attach to a ship and then trigger when they were safely away. It sank without actually doing what it was supposed to do, but I cant remember why ...

The submarine was actually a french invention of the 1500's to fight the brits. You can watch a pretty acurate copy in the 3 Musketeers movies with Richard Chamberlain.

Watched something about that civil war sub recently... it sank 3 times: first test it sunk killing its crew, they raised it and tried again, 2nd test it sunk killing its crew. After that they figured they testet it enough and deployed it: it managed to hit a british ship with its exploding spear, sank and killed its crew.

I may be incorrect but I believe you said there is no such thing as 330 degrees, and that it's just 45? Also, the type VII U-Boats had a single stern torpedo tube, an interesting design choice imo, but hey, superior german engineering and all that lol.

@myegyptiandadreacts4824 Gotcha. 330 is indeed a course they can find and turn to with the gyrocompass. Imagine it as just a normal compass that you don't have to hold perfectly steady to get a good reading. So in that scene (I don't remember what their course was, if it was said at all) say if they were moving perfectly north (0 Degrees), when the Captain gives the order to turn to 330, that just means to turn 30 degrees to the left. Giving commands using 0-360 is *probably* what the Germans would have done back in WW2. There is a video on YT somewhere that could explain it much better than I could hope to. I don't recall the name exactly, but it's a full tour of a type VII U-Boat that survived the war. : )

The submarine bunkers in Saint-Nazaire, Lorient, Bordeaux, La Rochelle still exist. They could not be completely destroyed even after the war. La Rochelle was used in the movie.

They could not be destroyed and they shouldn't. We have one of them here in Bremen, Germany. I say it shouldn't be destroyed because they are not only submarine pens, but mass graves and memorials. Some 6000 forced laborers were worked to death building the one here and their bodys where thrown into the concrete of its massive structure.

Love your channel, but the Germans didn't invent the submarine, do a little research on Google you will be enlightened. U boats is just the name of German submarines. Can you pin this so people are more enlightened. The submarine base of Saint-Nazaire still exists in France and they actually filmed a submarine motoring out of it.

It was filmed in La Rochelle, that u-boat bunker still exist too and so does the bunker in Brest, they a too big and massive to blow up

Fabulous film...though their soap was made from rendered Jewish fat, and their matrasses stuffed with Jewish hair. Kind of creepy, hey? Cracking movie, though, and your reaction is awesome. Kudos.
