Back for episode two! This is part one of the second episode of my Mervin Reads! The Twilight Illustrated guide. These next few parts are me taking on the interview at the beginning with Shannon Hale.
The guy doesn't have a choice in the matter either. The curse randomly picks a woman and forces them to feel affections for them. Based on what SMeyer has said, they are basically the slave of the Imprintee. They have to do whatever she says, and enjoy it.
If they are incapable of loving anybody other than those that they imprinted on, that is to imply that it's not by contractual obligation, but through emotional or sexual bonding. That is to say, the male is not exactly suffering, but the woman, who had no choice in the matter, is evidently suffering.
The part about Jacob being "brown" struck home for me - I could never even figure out what he was supposed to look like beyond a "russet" (Meyer's favorite word to describe Jacob) lump.
From Meyer's description of Edward, I got the image of Kiriyama from the Battle Royale movie. Y'know, the guy that entered voluntarily. To KILL. For FUN. Yep, seems to fit.
I read Twilight yesterday (Cries silently) and tried to count how many errors she has in the book. On two pages, I counted nine dashes. NINE! Seven of those nine could have been semicolons or commas. Dashes should be used carefully and should not be used on EVERY SINGLE PAGE! I have yet to use dashes in my story that I have in my notebook, and I wrote five pages already in three hours in school. So yes you are right, her dashes are appalling and her comma use is appalling as well. Good job!
You rambled a bit during this installment, but given the subject matter I honestly can't blame you for that. Over all, it was still far more entertaining listening to you rant than it was to read these books. Are you going to cover the contradictory statements in this guide in one whole go, or will they be peppered throughout?
I actually did a video explaining the Leah Clearwater situation believe it or not. My video is called Twilight: Leah Clearwater vs. Rosalie Hale two characters who wants children but cant have them. and in the video i go over Leah being infertile and in the video also i said i but she can only have children with her imprinted mate. which pisses me off due to the fact that male wolves can have as many children as they want with whoever they want. so if you are interested check out my video.
TheBookwurm82 I didn't think imprinting could be more fucked up but I was wrong. Not only is that sexist as hell, but the idea of you can only have babies with this one person is just really disturbing. Combined with the brainwashing element of imprinting and this is a horror movie.
@yeah20024 That's the problem; We're not faulting her for giving her readers what they wanted to imagine, but she still had to utilize a way to keep them entertained. I've read the books, and they're just so...boring. If it was just in her first book, it would be somewhat excuseable, but it continues for the entire series with no change in pace or dialogue.
In the hands of a competent author, Twilight could have been could. Get rid of the sparkling and golden eyes, the purple prose and all the bullshit. Combine Twilight and Eclipse (remove New Moon and Breaking Dawn), end it with Bella becoming a vampire and actually struggling with being one.
You can keep the golden eyes and sparkling, they don't bother me much. They are stupid, but harmless and make little difference. But at least make the characters a bit better. Actually have them know what they do is bad and genuinely feel bad about it.
Oh my gosh. You're just sad. She'll probably make a lot more money and stuff than you. So... get off her back. She wrote a book. She had never written anything before that, so before you go judge, YOU get the specifics!
you try writing a book how easy do you think it is to start and finish a series . You need a life outside of bashing people. maybe she wasn't trying to create a world ... maybe she just wanted her readers to imagine what they wanted to imagine. all I'm saying is you need help and you need to get a life.
You don't have to write a book to be able to criticize one. It's you Twitards who need a life outside of obsessing over a crappy series like Twishite. And criticizing it isn't "bashing people." And again it's you Twilight fans that need help not Das Mervin. And Meyer making more money than her doesn't make her better than her you greedy materialistic bitch.
You think that Meyer's attachment to her characters is disturbing? I'm sporking the works of Laurell K Hamilton, who buys Christmas presents for her characters.
You know, if we go by 'write a novel based on what you dream' as a guideline for becoming writers, I think my 5 minute dream of the planet Jupiter being in my room, and my sitting on it and taking a ride from my bed to the room's door would make a much more interesting and deep story than what SMeyer dreamed up.
Channeling my inner Tara here, but when did the VAMPIRE come into the equation?! Fairy, or spirit, I guess I'd understand, but how do you go from 'sparkly psycho' to 'vampire' ?!?!?
There is one other author I can think of who used his dreams as a basis for his writing: H.P. Lovecraft. Except it's perfectly clear that Lovecraft put thought into his writing and focused on building the universe he created. I'd like to think he dreamed of those strange entities and spent plenty of time developing them into proper characters. He used his imagination to the fullest in order to provide depth to his setting, and the dreams were only a part of what inspired him to write his work. His dreams basically contributed to building his fictional universe.. Sure, he is also guilty of purple prose, but not only was he good at using it, it also added to the tone of the story, evoking an archaic feel in his stories which came hand in hand with the creepiness factor. This style of writing actually meant something.
@herounlimited13 Not to mention that there are numerous words that are used without looking up their definitions. Moving from that point, you can't insult Mervin for doing this. Even though there are...devoted fans of the series, there are large amounts of anti-fans of the series; Mervin, myself and everyone else who watched this rant are examples. We hate the series for many reasons, partly because of the themes that she unintentionally put forth.
hey, those are meyerpires not vampires! big difference.. those are stone people that for some reason they drink blood.. their heart stops when they freeze like a meyerpire but not die and then come back to life.. those are frozen pussies that I don't know how they move and the kid stuff? he is shoting swarowsky juniors.. beside the impossible hard on.. good videos, really love them)
@herounlimited13 I won't list them, because I feel Mervin could do a better job than I ever could. No offense to you or other Twilight fans, but it seems that you had let your love for the series go overboard.
I have a lot of trouble writing out my thoughts and making them coherent, and I hate that I'm not better with words. But hey, at least I'm honest with myself about my shortcomings with writing, unlike SMeyer.
Glad I wasn't the only one who went "WTF" when I read Edward described as a "redhead" in Bree Tanner. She dedicates 90% of her books to over-the-top descriptions of Edward's amazing beauty and yet she can't even be consistent about his hair color??
