Removing the dash on the classic Ford Bronco can be tricky and it's a big task if you don't know what you are doing. Hopefully watching me remove the dash and steering wheel on my 1975 Ford Bronco will help you know what to do. I know I wish I had this video when I was removing mine.
I'm doing this because I'm replacing my wiring harness with the Painless Wiring harness for an Early Bronco. I know some people say you can keep the dash in place and still install the wiring harness. But now having removed the dash, I would say it's not that difficult and makes wiring way simpler and cleaner.
Step by step:
1. Start by removing everything in the dash, and unhook the heater control cable from the engine compartment.
2. Remove the bolts holding the windshield to the top and remove the wiper cover.
3. Disconnect the wiring for the wiper motor and wiper motor cover light on top of the windshield.
4. Remove the large bolts that go through the dash into the W/S frame.
5. Set the windshield down and remove the 7 dash screws.
6. Disconnect all the wiring you can from the back of the dash including ignition switch, headlight switch, hazards, etc.
7. Pull the wire harness out from the channel at the bottom of the dash.
8. Disconnect the heater control cables.
9. Remove the grounds.
10. Remove the horn.
11. Remove the 15/16 bolt.
12. Using a steering wheel puller, pull the steering wheel off.
13. Remove 4 screws holding in the turn signal switch
14. Remove the turn signal lever
15. Under the dash, disconnect the horseshoe connector.
16. Remove the shift indicator
17. Remove the two 7/16th bolts.
18. Remove the snap ring then the shift collar sleeve and shift tube can come out.
19. Then remove the four bolts under the dash.
20. Then remove the bolt in the center of the dash
21. Remove the four bolts holding in the speedometer.
22. Pull the dash out.

What I figured. I walked away from it last night out of frustration and before I broke it. Thought of your trials and sure enough you had been there done that. I will try to get it loosened up with wd 40 and advise. Thanks again for all you do.

Thanks for putting that together for us. I appreciate the fact you don't cover up all stuff you should have done differently. Laughed a bit about your shift cover.

Thanks for the video. Need to pull my dash for a new harness and while I am at it I might as well Lizardskin and add Vintage air. Great to have a guide since I have never pulled the dash before. Keep the videos coming.

Ironically, I also found an old bullet shell in my driver side air vent box! Looks like this was a standard inclusion from Ford :)

John, recent subscriber and have a question. The gray horseshoe connector (turn signal harness) under the dash is not wanting to separate. I only see the two tabs that are locks. Is there any other release or tab that needs to be manipulated to separate this connector? Could it be that 47 years of this connector not being separated is making this difficult. Don’t want to break the connector but need to replace turn signal harness and struggling with this darn connector. Any advice or suggestions much appreciated. Jeff 75 Bronc

Hey Jeff! It’s probably 47 years of not being separated that is making it difficult. And that brittle plastic is bound to break.

So I bought a new dashboard thats painted and I want to throw it on my bronco. Do you think I could pull my old dash out and reinstall the new one using the stock wiring harness? my plan is to remove the bezels so they’re free from the board but I’m going to reconnect them so when the harness is on the floor everything is still connected to the harness and I won’t get anything mixed up.

Yeah, I think you could use the stock harness. The tricky part will just be keeping everything organized so it goes back together right and like you said it doesn’t get mixed up

I've heard bad reviews on painless harnesses. Any regrets for choosing them over American autowire company? How's the 1974 bronco project coming along?

No regrets. I really like the painless kit. The 74 is coming along. When I have time to work on it

Hey man I have a 76 I’m redoing just like you and need some advice! How do you remove the speedometer? and is it a pain to remove? I’m thinking about pulling it out and open it up and replace the old paper with toms bronco parts restoration paper that you can buy to make it look new.

Removing the speedometer is really easy. 4 boltson the dash, then the speedo cable behind it and then remove the wiring. I haven’t rebuilt my speedo, so I don’t know how complex that is

What are your plans for the bronco? You plan on frame off restoration?
